Damn what an awful story. Does the family go through the motions of the wedding today? So many lives are destroyed over this. RIP Gaudreau brothers. I'm so sad over this.

For the love of god everybody, when you're driving just be chill. Getting irritated and trying to pass a car, even when they're driving slow, just to get to your destination a minute or two faster isn't necessary. Keep your distance, mirror check, shoulder check, head on a swivel at all times. It's so senseless for people to die this way.

so sad all around. the fact that he was there to take part in his sister's wedding the next day really gets to me. that family was ready to celebrate one of the biggest nights of their lives. even worse is the fact that he leaves behind two little kids

RIP

This isn't the late old days where you can't get an uber or something with a click of the button on your phone. If you own a car + can go out and get a drink (if it is 1) then you can afford an uber home. Personal responsibility for other people in society needs to start be a thing again

Unfortunately it's the inconvenience of having to retrieve your vehicle the next day, etc., that makes people drive drunk. Even if the right thing to do is very convenient.

It’s not necessarily a victim blame.

Biking rural roads at night is like walking through a dark urban park at night. Regardless of whether it should be as safe as broad daylight, on a practical level you’re going to encounter different dangers.

It's 100% victim blaming. It's the biking equivalent of "she shouldn't have been wearing that skirt" or "she shouldn't have put herself in that situation" in rape cases.

We have no idea of the lighting conditions, what the stretch of road looks like, if they were wearing helmets, if they had lights on their bikes. But in this senseless tragedy people feel the need to focus on what the two dead young men should have done differently and not the drunk driver who killed them.

The vehicular homicide laws are pretty lax, doubt he spends all that much time behind bars considering what he's done.
Two counts...probably 10 years per count.

I bet he gets 15-20 years at minimum. Not enough but he'll get hammered bc of the high profile of the case.

He'll probably plead guilty as well. IMHO, it sounds like he knew he seriously f Ed up.

I still can't wrap my head around this tragic loss. My heart breaks for the families.

That's debatable. There are plenty of reckless drivers who would pull a move like this even whilst sober.

That’s what I was thinking. There are drivers who would do something like this, and drivers who wouldn’t.

Feeding a safe/normal driver a bunch of beer might impair their thinking, but it isn’t going to make them suddenly start weaving through traffic at night on a rural road. The maneuver this guy was attempting requires a baseline level of aggression and disrespect for safety.

I did not know about this until I just saw this post. How awful. In addition to not treating drunk driving seriously enough, the US simply does not protect or respect bike riders the way we ought to. Other countries have actual dedicated lanes that are protected from the automobile traffic. I wish we took biker safety more seriously here. As it is, I would never ride along a busy road because of reckless and inconsiderate (and drunk) drivers. Just a truly horrific incident.
I almost think that people who buzz cyclists should have to get on bikes and see how it feels to have a hunk of metal whizzing by your left shoulder at 50+km/hr within inches. Or to walk across a crosswalk and get cut off by a turning car obviously focused on only looking for other vehicles rather than pedestrians. There's a sort of disconnect of perspectives between those who only know getting around by vehicle versus those who walk, cycle and drive.

100% true, but if I recall this happened at like shortly after 8. That's right around when it gets dark right now. It was probably light when they set off on the ride. I suspect they wouldn't have set off on the ride at 2 am in the morning.

I always tell my wife even in a car, I wanna get off the road before the drunks come out, but honestly I wouldn't have thought 8 pm to be a particularly risky time yet, especially mid-week.
