Man, I bike around NJ and have had a few close calls with very bad drivers. Honestly, I think I need to re-evaluate continuing my cycling hobby.

You're really in a vulnerable position on the road and have no idea when a driver is under the influence or going to do something unpredictable. I wear a helmet, but with the size of cars these days, you're more likely to get dragged under rather than end up on top of the hood if hit.

I've been sideswiped while on a bike but walked away with a few scratches. This spring though, I almost got completely nailed head-on at an intersection in Jersey City when a van ran a red light.

These brothers were likely out enjoying themselves and getting some exercise/fresh air. They deserved so much better. RIP.

Probably a little longer being two deaths, but even then sentenced vs served who knows how long the guy would actually get.

You'd be surprised. Not to sidetrack the thread but there have been some very surprising sentences handed out over the years, for incidents even worse than this one.

Hopefully this Higgins guy has breathed his last breath as a free man.

So true and such an awful way to be given this reminder. As someone who is travelling today on this busy holiday weekend, I will most definitely keep this in mind. And as someone who also bikes and has had my fair share of close calls, it just is so sad,

I feel so bad for Johnny's family. This has just punched me so hard in the gut. That picture of him and his wife and kids on the ice just hit me so hard. RIP Johnny Hockey.
Wishing you safe travels

1st degree murder is premeditated

2nd degree is in the heat of the moment. This absolutely qualifies.

Where you see DUIs resulting in death being charged as manslaughter is because murder requires malice and most courts rule that getting behind a wheel knowingly drunk doesnt constitute malice, just negligence
Stop

I feel so sad. I am heartbroken for the Gaudreau family. Today was supposed to be the happiest day of his sister's life and now it's the saddest.. so tragic. RIP to Johnny and his brother.. you were amazing hockey player and so many smaller players look up to you. Hockey just feels so irrelevant today.

Agreed on the bad phrasing, but murder is a legal definition to be determined by the courts.

"Passes away" is such a gentle, meaningless euphemism that, if used at all, should be reserved for deaths that can be best ascribed to "natural causes" ... such as 95-year-olds who drift away in their sleep.

The only time active hockey players should be said to "pass away" is when they assist on a goal. Maybe after a lengthy illness but even then, best to avoid meaningless phrases like this.

I'd go with:

"Johnny Gaudreau & brother killed by motorist while bicycling; driver reputed to have told police he consumed alcohol prior to accident"

As for the incident itself: ****ing awful in any context, but my god, the timing here is just heartbreakingly brutal for that family.

Imagine how this will hang like a black cloud over every milestone in the sister's relationship with her fiancé. No matter when the wedding happens, this will be woven into the memory every anniversary.

Those who've had a loved one die on or around a major holiday know what I mean. My condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy.

man that’s heartbreaking.

I wish they would start calling this murder instead of an accident. Unforgivable.
At least call it manslaughter or criminal negligence. That's what it is at the very least if not murder.

The driver sounds like a piece of garbage. Impatient drunk piece of shit driving like that on a two-way road..
Well there are allot of aggressive drivers, distracted drivers, angry drivers, cell phone usage drivers, I see them all every day and they are all very dangerous.

Looking at a street view and the surrounding area, not sure why those two were out on their bikes at that time of day and on that road. The driver is 100% to blame for being too aggressive, but everyone has to use common sense for self preservation. I wouldn't ride a bike on a road like that in full daylight.

I can guarantee you that this guy is having the worst morning of his life right now. Unless he's an absolute psychopath, he's torturing himself over the reckless decisions he made and he should be.

I don't even feel safe driving a vehicle in Edmonton. How people get on a bicycle I'll never understand.
