Torts being Canucks HC said many times about this " transition to younger team" ( as key to success) and was fired from Nucks :laugh:
And now it's official position.

Am I wrong in thinking that Torts has really brought a calming influence, despite all his past blowups?

Sure; but you can see some of the old Torts from time to time. Once the team starts to get at that playoff level, I think you'll see less patience. Time will tell.

I am thus far surprised too, but jury still out. It appears that Torts blows up at veterans who make stupid mistakes outside the system, or with any player who does not play hard or who takes selfish penalties. He has appeared to LIKE teaching the younger players more than I expected. He almost anticipates the mistakes, invites the mistakes, in order to use them as teaching moments. The real test will be when he's got them where his system is fully integrated, when players are expected to NOT make mistakes, and when (hopefully) the playoff chase heat is on. He was volcanic in the past under those circumstances. Will he be in the future? Hoping to see the answer.

This sums up Tortorella pretty well. He's a lot like that teacher that all of us had at one point who could make your life miserable, and was good for a blowup each academic quarter, but he was bright and engaging when there was reciprocation.

If you're willing to pay attention in class, to be engaged and ask questions, to do your homework, and to generally not dick around, you'll get plenty of leeway. If you'd rather be disruptive and not be engaged, your life will be hell as long as he's running things. I think the fact that Tortorella has had players who are willing to work hard and are smart guys on the ice but desperately need guidance is what's helped things here, and I think it's re-energized him after a miserable experience working with Vancouver's aging and extremely soft core.

He has an exceptional track record of developing young players, as shown in Tampa and in New York. Half of the Rangers who amounted to anything owe that to Tortorella.

So Torts is Mr. Hand, and the CBJ are Spicoli? Sounds about right.

I'll be curious to see if we get a different Torts next year when games actually matter. I mean, hopefully they matter.

You get the feeling Torts will keep the assistant coaches. You also get the feeling as he gets more comfortable he'll let it fly... Whatever that looks like.

I agree he will become more like the Torts we all have seen if the Jackets become a playoff type team. But I think he knew he had to be more of a fixer than being a breaker. Pretty clear how fragile the team was/is when he got to Columbus. If he ranted and raved, I am sure the Jackets would still be last in the NHL now.

Don't say anything at all
When Tort was hired, I thought he had a decent shot of getting the then-worst team in the league a postseason berth by the end of the season.

The reality is, we didn't do much better under him than we did under Richards. We should have fired Richards at the end of last season so we could have made a move for Babcock. We didn't and we paid the price.

While we're not gonna have the worst overall record, we're gonna have the worst among American teams - which says a lot, given that the team is located in Ohio, known for having some lousy sports teams (here's looking at you, Cleveland Browns, a fandom I am on the verge of leaving if they don't draft Cardale Jones).

Honestly, do you think Tort can carry us if we could only manage to have a better record than only Canadian teams this season (no offense to fans of these teams)? And the season is still not over. Edmonton and Toronto could still pass us in the overall standings, but not likely.

I had high hopes this season, I was convinced this was the year we'd finally at least make the division finals, before this season even started. Instead, we were the last team to get a point.

The point is, if we're gonna gel as a team next season, another coaching change is in order. It's been rough watching the Ohio pro teams I root for this fall and winter (the Clowns [sic] finished tied for the worst record in the NFL) except the Cavs. Hopefully next season can be much different.

...eh. I don't think that was very realistic. Not arguing your post one way or the other, but making the playoffs after going 0-8 would break the record books.

Also, after giving VAN a 2nd for the rights to hire him, he isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Now for me, I liked the hire, but his mancrush for Prout is starting to wear me out. I don't give a **** how good the guy clears a crease or stands up for his teammates, none of that overcomes the constant lapses and bad spots he puts his team in.

I don't get it either. My hope is that Torts will get fed up with him in the new year.

If you remember the start of this year, Prout was one of the first guys Torts blew up at. Since the team has been out of contention, Torts is more relaxed. Maybe once he really cares about winning again, he'll play him more sparingly.

I'm not interested in some of the excuses that have been made for Torts. A coach has to be held responsible whether he gets a training camp with his players or not. We've seen Jack Adams winners come along after taking over teams in the first quarter of the season. We've seen coaches win cups after taking over in the first quarter of the season.

But one thing I'm mulling over - the issue with Torts system in the past was that he wore his players down physically. So it might be that he's deliberately giving the guys a rest so they're ready to go next year. The Jackets are markedly less physical than they've been in the recent past. Last year was freak injuries, this year they were out of contention, but prior to that this was one of the most physical teams in the league. It seems to be the only way some of these guys get into the game - by hitting.
