Just pointing this out here, but when's the last time we signed a major FA that didn't fall off a cliff? They all seem to, despite all the reasons we come up with.

Anyway, I don't blame Slats for this one. Torts' job is to get the most out of the players. If Sather had done a crappy job building the team, then it's on him, but I don't think anyone can sit here and say that was the case. We were 1st in the East last year - shows you what Torts can, and should have been able to do this year. But the PP sucked, and players tuned him out. And it's not like we always gave our best effort this year, unlike last year where there were a handful of games all year where we didn't play hard. That's also on the coach. So yea, this had to be done.

I'm looking forward to actually having an offense again...

You could ALMOST replace Torts in this post (and in a good portion of this thread) with Renney and everyone would think it's 2009 again. The 1st in the east would be a dead giveaway here but the rest is spot on... especially the bolded lol.

Step came in like gang busters early on, so did MDZ. Kreider too last year.

Krug's performance is not proof of anything. In 1996, second rounder Dan Goneau was huge in his first games, then turned into a career minor leaguer. A year later, Vorobiev did the same thing.

And our drafting has not been "horrid", it has been better than 90% of the teams.

Would love to see how you come up with that metric. And no, pulling it out of your ass doesnt count.

The early to mid round drafting has been good, although a bit redundant. Whats absurd is that no 1st rounder has been able to make a consistently good impact outside of Staal, and the Rangers have developed no depth whatsoever from within the organization.

Aside from Richards (which I was on the fence about) everything he has done over he last 4/5Y had more +'s than -'s.

Exactly. From 2008 on (the season after the Redden contract) Sather's basically made the moves I'd have made, Gaborik trade aside.

I didn't like letting Prust walk, but I understand why it happened. I didn't like the Nash trade, but if you can get a super-star for less "talent" than he's worth, you pretty much have to do it. I hated the Gaborik trade, but I thought at least giving the coach the kind of players he wants make sense. Richards was pretty much a flawless signing at the time as the cap-recapture boogeyman didn't exist in the new CBA and nobody really saw that coming.

I also think the biggest issues we've had that hamstring us (Staal's perpetual freak injury stuff, Jagr's post CBA contract issues and the option not triggering, Cherepanov) are kind of out of his control. If any of those aforementioned issues go our way, we're all probably much less on edge as a fanbase.

The way I look at it is this:

The Rangers have talent. Sather deserves a lot of credit in that regard (so too does his unlimited budget) The Rangers have a lot of work to do to get better, but if Stepan is a fringe #1 C, and Kreider and Nash click, that's a huge weight lifted from the scoring burden. A scoring left-wing (ideally one that can play PP trigger) is our biggest need, and some help on right D. We're not close, but we're not super far away, either.

Its Sathers fault Staal was hit in the eye in what was developing into his best season as a pro.

Its Sathers fault that Clowe - a player who was completely rejuvinated the day he got here - was ilegally smashed in the dome.

Its Sathers fault he didn't trade for Crosby, Malkin, Toews, Kane, Doughty, or Kopitar or any of the other lottery picks he failed to draft, even though they were drafted before he picked.

Its Sathers fault he didn't trade Stepan and Dubinsky for Mike Richards and his contract. Or Girardi and a 1st for Jeff Carter and his contract.

I think thats almost what is expected when you are drafting in the later half of the first.

Look through any draft at the players in the back half of the first, and at best a couple of them are good.

they came to the rangers and scored for a few games...until torts got his hooks into them. then they stopped scoring. just my opinion.

An "opinion" that isn't based in reality. Believing Torts' "system" is a poor one is a fine opinion. Actually saying he "stopped players from scoring" is patently false.

Brassard:

First 6 regular season games with NYR: 1 goal, 5 assists.
Next 6 regular season games with NYR: 4 goals, 1 assist.
First 13 regular season games with NYR total: 5 goals, 6 assists; 11 points.
Next 12 playoff games with NYR: 2 goals, 10 assists.

Was producing at a 0.53 point per game pace with CBJ this season. Career average is 0.56 points per game. Comes to Rangers, produces at a 0.84 point per game pace.

Clowe:

First 6 regular season games with NYR: 2 goals, 2 assists.
Next 6 regular season games with NYR: 1 goal, 3 assists.

Was producing at a 0.4 point per game pace with SJS this season. Career average is 0.64 points per game. Comes to Rangers, produces at a 0.67 point per game pace.

some have said that perhaps a coach shouldn't be "nice". fine. he shouldn't be a power tripping arrogant ******* who seems to take pride in humiliating his players and others to satisfy his weak ego either. so glad he's audader!!!!! :handclap::laugh::laugh:

mark messier behind the bench. no?

Success doesn't always translate, of course, but he's done a great job in the desert.

Did he win a Cup and I missed it?

What exactly has he accomplished that makes people certain he will do better than make it to the final 8 or 4?

Is this a new shiny toy thing?

Clowe was injury prone recently in San Jose, so no reason to be shocked he was injured in his short time here.

LOTS of people worried about that in the Clowe trade thread.

#NYR Some candidates I believe NYR will consider: Tippet (if avail), Ruff, Vigneault. Would definitely not overlook Mark Messier, either

Messier

just got informed about this by word of mouth (what is this, the middle ages?). bar prep is killing me, but I cannot wait to lurk on this thread and pour through the ol' comments.

i'm ambivalent about the move. i liked Torts' demeanor, the conditioning stuff, and the defensive minded approach. but at the end of the day, that system killed the offense and the big moves made in the offseason didnt do ****. what's up, tom renney?

For 1st rounders, Ill buy that, although several other teams have done it.

It still isnt a legitimate excuse as to why this team cant draft and develop 3rd/4th line depth players. Its really hurting this team.

I'd rather have kept Torts.

Of course it is. Im surprised people havent soured on the coaching candidates yet.

I sure don't remember Goneau or Vorobiev impressing like Krug just did.
