Why not just paint every player with a broad brush stroke. And he wonders why his shtick gets stale quickly. Everyone’s attention spans are shorter now because of the internet, social media, and smart phones. And every generation thinks the one after it is lazy/unfocused/etc. Somehow the world keeps on spinning and productivity continues to increase.

I think you're right productivity is increasing but so is stress. More importantly, I read an article a few years ago that said downtime where you have nothing but your thoughts was where inspiration always comes from. The next Hawking is likely in a Starbucks lineup right now pulling his phone out to look at it instead of solving problems.
