I think you gotta hope for more when you spend 11 million a year starting seven years ago.

It’s great he’s having a good season and the wheels didn’t totally fall off like it seemed was happening a couple of years ago, but he was overpaid by ~2-3 million a year imo.

What's happening to the cap was supposed to happen a long time ago...

That contract was supposed to age a lot better than it did.

Yeah I keep hearing that but that’s the gamble you take as management.. and in this case they were wrong.

It’s supposed to go up quickly again now so teams will splurge and if the economy tanks they’ll be wrong again.

Ya, they should have taken into account there might have been a pandemic.

But seriously, it is hard to forecast with certainty what the cap will be 5 years out, but I am sure they would have done a pretty good job without the pandemic.

The cap should be over 100 million now.

Since he signed here (2018-19 season to now) here's Tavares' rank among centers:

11th in goals
13th in points
8th in powerplay goals
13th in powerplay points
9th in game winning goals
4th in face-off win%

No matter what was said when he signed the deal, he's been worth every penny. That's unquestionably #1C production.

He's played well this year

The issue comes back to...if you bring him back and Marner too...what changes were made? If they came up short this post-season.

Thanks for sharing, and doing the work there. That is literally insane, especially next to some of the crybaby fan narratives.

Nobody expected that kind of production, not even the guy who signed him..! Hahaa.. He's been a better Leaf than an Islander, which is even more credit to him.
Will be even more tasty when he goes into the Hall as a Leaf, not an Islander. :popcorn:

I think it was their unwillingness to pivot off the "Big 4" forward model after the pandemic made it clear big cap jumps weren't going to happen, that is on management.

Sure but they used to make all kinds of hateful posts about him and they've kind of dried up as the contract goes on and he's still performing at an elite level.

I think by the time the playoffs end this season every Leafs fan will want both Marner and Tavares back. The Tavares contract will be fine. The Marner contract will be massive.
