John Tavares the Man the Myth the Legend

What will he do against Tampa or Florida in the playoffs ? He’s having a great season so far but can he produce against superior competition? Can a top heavy, two line team go on a deep playoff run ? If the answers to the above are no, then team construction needs to change and all bets are off unless he’s willing to take a significant haircut.
I think it is but it isn’t his fault we need to take the babs approach with our top 9 so we can put our stars out against 3rd d pairs and cook em gotta play chess and exploit matchups to our advantage we’ve proven that head on post season we get neutralized so force teams to match up against us

It’s been eight years. It was a mistake signing him in the first place because they spent too much money on four similar players and ignored their defense and scoring depth. Not JT’s fault of course but one playoff series win in nine tries is a sign of a failed plan. It seems to me they’ve tried a number of different line combinations but it doesn’t seem to make much difference because their stars are too easy to shutdown. Shanahan needs to go because he believed in them and kept running it back. If they fail again things need to change because the sum is worse than their expensive parts. Whether that’s JT or Marner or both. My guess is Marner will leave on his own and JT will sign for a longer term and less money. Will that be enough to move the needle ? Who knows.

You guys really want to pay a premium for 10 less goals albeit 20 more points a season. I honestly believe I’m being generous offering 3 million more a year for that. And yes they both have other intangibles.
I’m not paying him anything, the team or another team will. You’re not be generous you’re being extremely naive

JT scored 72g/134p when he was 16yo in the O.

At 34yo Mr. Consistency delivers 1C production on his way to the HOF.

I'd bet on staying power for a few years yet. Sign him up along with apologies for the dubie years and having to take a second discount.

Its Toronto buddy, hang in there with the rest of us.

Mgmt really is classless as well as dumb. You’re not the best player on the team we want the C back. Talk about embarassing

$5.5 mill per year would be my ceiling.

He’s been awesome, but I have a hard time believing he’ll be at this level next year and beyond.

Like where were these performances last year?

that’s just it. His career is winding down.

He’s been unreal this year no doubt. But I’m sure reality will set in soon.

I want him back, but at 17 year money.
That'll happen. But 5.5 aint it. Just enjoy these nights and this player, tho. We're insanely lucky we get to see it - but we're all too PTSD'd to take it in.

Dude just got his 35th.. it's f'in bananas!!!

It’s just the difference in valuations, Over the next 3 years Mitch isn’t worth more than 3 million a year compared to JT. Just my opinion …
At the age of 34 Tavares is having a better season than 27 year old Marner. Many here have complained over the years that we overpaid for Tavares...and he shouldnt have gotten his 11 million x8 contract. Well his contract was 13.84% of the cap at that time. And we only needed to sign him for 7 years. He was also a two time Hart finalist.

Yet some of those same posters who have complained about Tavares want to give Marner 13+ X 8 years (13.22 mill is 13.84%)? Its a bigger contract for a worse player, playing a less important position for more term!

When Tavares scored the empty net goal, Marner and Matthews congratulated eachother but totally ignored Tavares when he came up to high-five them. Was totally obvious and very odd.

Anyone else noticed that?
