Good to get the win and nice to see Tavares playing up to his top billing. Some of the reactions by Matthews and Marner justified a player like Tavares being captain. They were looking for leadership it seemed.
Red flag: It took an extraordinary effort by Tavares to lift the club. This is well and good coming from a captain. The problem is it's an exception to the model. It's unsustainable. If it's a catalyst then great. But I view these types of wins in the same way I view blowouts; There's no reason to expect a repetition of outcome.
Our next game needs to be 5 men every shift, playing close, playing good team defense and some semblance of the usual suspects putting up points. Another 5-2, 4-2 win with Marner and Reilly getting assists, Matthews a pair and Nylander and Tavares chipping in is what we need to see. And then again, see it over and over, whether the score is 2-1 or 9-3, where the outcome is less important than the observable process.
Now go trade Kerfoot for some help on D and G or a pick. Management needs to make the point, that this about the club, old habits need to be shed, it's not business as usual moving forward, the club's emotional approach isn't going to move the needle.
When our club is methodical and that team character emerges apart from the wildly emotive one, then we have cause for optimism. Good first step to build on though.
P.S. Saw a thing from Mike Rupp about Matthews' engaging that I disagree with: Last exchange sees Matthews giving Konecny a right jolt. I think Matthews handled it perfectly and knew what he had in front of him, injuries notwithstanding. Just ask Rasmus Dahlin if Matthews' has a switch.
