First I'm ever hearing of a coke scandal.

I’ll find the article but basically Viktor Loov prompted some discussion between The Maple Leafs and Toronto Police because of Loov’s comments in a Swedish article surrounding his time in Toronto saying there is a lot of coke in the NHL and he was surrounded by it in his time in Toronto and the NHL does nothing about it. That prompted bill Daley to address the media and confirm that cocaine use is up in the NHL and they are going to test more often.

I have friends who have played in the AHL and OHL and they’ve heard some stuff about Lupul and Kadri but again those two names are just rumours and can’t put too much stock into it being them at the forefront . But there seemed to be some sort of cocaine problem in the NHL and potentially in the leafs dressing room

He's just a replacement level player at this point. That concussion he took last playoffs was harsh AF. It dropped him from a 7.5 to a 5. Average, as average could be. For a whole lotta money and cap space. How many millions? Wasted. Invisible. Discuss...

Replacement level players don't put up 76 points in 79 games, get educated because you do not have a clue.

It is true we need more from him this playoffs but he's far from a replacement level player

JT needs to have the game of his life tonight. Zeroes on the scorecard and things are gonna get ugly for him.

If a bunch of young rich guys doing cocaine comes as a surprise to you, do I ever have a hell of deal on NTFs to tell you about!

lol! it doesn't come to a surprise to me but apparently many don't know that cocaine and substance abuse is a huge problem in all sports haha, not even just hockey

I agree put Kerfoot back up on that first line. Give Bunting - Tavares - Nylander another go. They looked really good in the preseason.
Things that make sense rarely happen for us in playoff.

Kerfoot Matthews Marner Bunting JT Nylander should be out there > 50% of the time together.

76 points in 79 games, in an 'off' season playing with mixed pairs all season long.
He would be the leading scorer on:
Buf
Det
Mtl
Ott
CBJ
NJD
NYI
PHI
VGN
ANA
ARI
LAK
SJS (tied)
thats more than a third of the teams in the NHL, so, i think he's a fair bit better than a 5 Average 'replacement level' player.

Imagine substituting Tavares for a top-tier goalie or defenseman in the league. The Leafs would be way better positioned to win the Stanley Cup.
and which top-tier goalie has been available that is on a Vasalevski level, or even remotely close?
Do you think Bobrovsky at 10 million would be better than JT? I'd rather have an elite #2 center that could easily be our #1C if we didnt get lucky with Matthews
if we lose that draft lotto, our top line would have been Laine - Tavares - Marner right now

Tavares 1pts, +0, 78.6fo%, 5sh, 1ht, 3bk, 1gv, 0tk, 49.7xgf% (+3.7rel)
Point 1pts, -3, 53.6fo%, 8sh, 4ht, 1bk, 3gv, 1tk, 43.4xgf% (-8.8rel)
Stamkos 1pts, -3, 46.7fo%, 2sh, 6ht, 0bk, 0gv, 0tk, 38.8xgf% (-10.4rel)

I thought "John Tavares is the hero who will bring us at least two Cups in his first three years here."

I wish you guys would make up your minds. :sarcasm:

Actually, he was a good player we didn't really need (at that price), who isn't ageing very well.

Replacement means easily replaced. 11m for 76 points is the definition of easily replaced

Jeezus, this fanbase sometimes. I know he's only got one point in two games but he's coming off having the 3rd highest xGF% of any forward on the team last game (67.16), is one of 3 players to not have been on for a goals-against all series and has gone a crazy 21-6 on the faceoff dot.

Yeah the guy whose teams never had players like Matthews and Marner on it. The guy that carried an over the hill Leafs team on his back year after year. The guy who wasn’t our 2nd line center and scored clutch goal after clutch goal in the playoffs.

Tavares couldn’t carry Sundin’s jockstrap. He’s not even 1/50th of the player he was. Don’t even waste forum bandwidth comparing the two.
I would bet my left nut you said all the same stuff about sundin. I'd also bed my right nut you would respond with " no, never, I loved him every day forever derp lurp"

this is why we can't have nice things.

What's he going to do, go to Dubas and tell him to renegotiate his contract? That would go over well with the Players Association. The mistake was management signing him to a contract of a length he could not sustain his level of play, due to age.

you don't have a clue what replacement level means

Kyle Clifford is replacement level
Dude I understand what replacement level means statistically, if you remove the cap - Kyle Clifford, Nik Petan, etc... In this case, I am accounting for the cap when I say replacement, or if you like, REPLACEABLE. How hard is it to understand replacement level when you have 11 f***ing million to work with, to make said replacement? Hence, replacement level player. Semantics be damned.

It’s a battle you’re not going to win, there is no guarantee that a combination of UFAs (which are notoriously bad contracts to begin with) could replace Tavares.

You’re complaining about a bad UFA signing but then want to replace him with 2-3 guaranteed bad UFA signings in the later years of those replacement contracts.

I rather have a guy who’s “lost step” is 76 points. Than a bunch of guys who’s contract would also not be worth their value. That’s what UFA is.. unless it’s a bargain deal, you’re most likely overpaying for services

I get it. I understand JT is not awful. He just sucks for the money. And he's going to get worse. I just wish Dubas had the patience not to pull that trigger. And my point is that at this juncture, if we win, we win in spite of Tavares. 11m for an aging 2nd line centre is tough to overcome.
