John Tavares appreciation thread

The thing that gets me the most is when people suggest he was a bad signing.

Just like the pieteangelo situation today, if a player comes along as a ufa and you csn sign them and they make you a better team why would you not?

At the time tavares was signed we didnt have matthews and our centers where basically kadri and bozak. Im not a dubas fan but you cannot go through thinking you will draft a specific player. A bird in the hand and all that stuff.

As for his actual contract, he deserved it imo. He put in his dues and signed as a ufa based on a body of work. Curly, larry and matthews shook dubas down on what they might do.

The same is with toews and kane, they got their big deal after how many cups, con smyths, olympic and international finishes. To compare marner to kane is laughable imo and im not a kane fan.

Tavares signing will probably be dubas claim to fame once he gets fired.
I think you're confused.

Matthews was drafted in 2016 and Tavares was signed in 2018.

I wonder if he's thinking of Steven Stamkos who the Leafs had a meeting with about him singing in Toronto, which was after they drafted Matthews 1st overall in 2016.

Although personally I think it worked out for the best because Tavares ended up being a better signing. Plus the fact Stamkos himself has had various injuries since re-signing with Tampa Bay.

I think that having his first child distracted in him a bit. I am not saying I am super Athlete, but when my twins were born, my performance dipped at work.

Tavares has been nothing short of awesome so far this season.
It's funny thinking of those Leafs haters who said he was done because of the way he played last season and fail to acknowledge the injuries he had like his broken finger that caused him to miss 7 games. So when something like that happens obviously his stats will go down compared to what he did during the 2018-19 Season.

Yeah for sure, it takes time to recover. He is healthy and in shape now.

The Leafs have not hit full stride yet this season. They are a much better team than they have showed so far.

Best part about Tavares is seeing him jaw at Pionk and now Tkachuck. He’s feeling it this year.
We will never know what Tavares actually said to them on the ice, however here was his speech last season after they won in Sheldon Keefe's debut as the head coach and he was cursing a lot. When you see him give interviews you wouldn't think he talks like that.

Even with those 7 games he missed last season Tavares still averaged 0.95 PPG and as of today he's currently at 1.00 PPG for the 2020-21 Season.

I’m a flip flopper with Tavares. I loved the signing out of the gate (thinking that we’d get the big 3 under contract based on expert predictions at the time... 6-8 mil less a year).

After the unprecedented dramatic overpayments to our rfa’s, I started to think, in hindsight, it was a bad signing.

Last year he appeared to have lost a step, and I was worried he’d be one of the (not very rare) players who significantly decline at around 30. I was 100% against the signing (only in hindsight again).

but this year he looks like the real deal. Hopefully one of those players who (also not very rare) whose prime years last well into their mid 30’s. I think I’m back to liking the signing again.

it’s been a roller coaster...

For whatever reason, the Leafs have brought the game back to him. He is not fast enough for the free-wheeling fast paced game that Dubas had envisioned. To Keefe's credit, he has slowed the game down and this allows Tavares to perform at a much higher efficiency. From my perspective Dubas's vision was flawed and Keefe has a better idea of what it takes to compete effectively in the playoffs. Would certainly not mind if they went out and acquired more playoff type players.

Nice to see him back after a few wanks had decided he was "too slow for todays game". The signing was risky and the failure of the cap to continue up means its a worry almost every year. But he could age like Sundin or Thornton or even Staal who was strong at 33. He's 30 not 35.

There is a Tavares vs Stamkos poll on the main boards and I'm not joking when I say this, Tavares is getting bashed because he was apparently trying to pad his stats with an empty net goal and the Leafs got called for icing with 0.5 seconds left in the 3rd period, even though he was trying to clear the puck out and it resulted in an icing. The amount of bashing he gets is crazy and I think that's the craziest thing I have read about him on here.

We have people on the leaf forum criticizing Marner for ENG.
I mean, shouldnt we expect ENG if they pull the goalie? Seems to me that you send a message to other teams to be a bit more tentative in such situations.

It's the fact that Tavares was called selfish trying to pad his stats, even though he was clearing the puck out and it just so happened that he iced the puck, plus the fact there was 0.5 seconds left in the 3rd period when the whistle blew. So I think there was a lot more hate for him with that reply.

DUDE it not JT bashing

it leafs bashing and nothing more

I just wanted to post this link to one of my first ever threads on this forum: John Tavares will score 90 points this season.

He ended up with 88 pts that season! Be weary of reading some of the comments though, an incredible amount of hate in there.
This reply made me laugh when Tavares was referred to as a $15.9 million player because that was his total salary after his bonuses during the first year of his contract. So he was completely ignoring Tavares $11 million AAV, along with the fact he signed for $2 million less from Toronto.

John Tavares will score 90 points this season.

On July 1, 2018 after Tavares signed and before you created that thread on August 3, 2018 there was this big read from Sportsnet written by Elliotte Friedman where he says San Jose offered him $13.5 million AAV.

How the Toronto Maple Leafs signed John Tavares - Sportsnet.ca

San Jose had the only owner show up, and that impressed Tavares. It took Plattner two-and-a-half hours to drive from where his plane landed to the meeting. Wilson doesn’t like being called a great salesman — “I don’t think it’s selling to talk about how proud we are of what we’ve built here” — but if you’ve ever seen Glengarry Glen Ross, you’ll know that he is allowed to drink coffee, because coffee is for closers.

Wilson wouldn’t discuss San Jose’s pitch, but word is he told Tavares, “You are the final piece for us.” It has also been rumoured (but never confirmed) that the Sharks were willing to pay $13.5 million per year for seven years. “That was a confident group,” one source says. “They felt they were the best option for John, and they showed it.”

The Maple Leafs just released their latest edition of The Leaf: Blueprint on YouTube and it features with Tavares talking about this season. After watching it you can hear how he wants to win. Plus it's great how he talks about learning new things from the players they signed during the offseason, so they can make him a better player and leader since he mentions their character, what they have accomplished, and what they do on the ice.

It's no secret the whole team has struggled to produce a bit at 5v5, but for JT, he only has 1 point. He's had a bit of a hard time producing at 5v5 through 8 games. Not for a lack of trying though. I think it's a combination of revolving left wing, mixed with bounces/puck luck.

On-Ice SH of 3.6%. Maybe Keefe can continue throwing Hyman on any of the top 2 lines until both are going. When both lines are going, this team is a very hard out.

He is dominant on face-0ffs which has really helped. Don't worry Captain, you'll figure it out. Hopefully the Oilers can help him out.

I am quite pleased with JT's play this season. In fact his play away from the puck has been spectacular. Missed passes are down, completed passes are up. His attention to detail and taking the man has been spot on, and the results in the win column says a lot. This is the Captain we need right now. Scoring has never been a problem on this team. JT will get his share...

IMO Tavares has been nowhere near good enough this year, nor last year, and this year is getting glossed over because of some early PP production with him sitting in front of the net for tips and bang ins.

Completely agree. He hasn’t impressed me at all. He’s still picking up points which is good, but he’s not taking over games like he’s paid to do every now and then.
