John Tavares appreciation thread

The problem is JT will always be the more natural fit with Marner. AM is a shoot first guy and Marner an extreme pass first guy. Willie and JT are more two dimensional in that area and that will keep goalies and D guessing. With AM and MM you cheat to Matthews every time because Marner's shooting is average at best and he doesn't let it go enough. Mitch had almost 70 assists with Tavares which is Jagr/Lafleur territory for a winger. Does he actually need to be with the best goal scorer in the league to prosper? Those two duos will do fine as they are but I doubt that is the maximum use of their talents.
How does one maximize Matthews by pairing him with lesser talent?

Its diminishing returns. Matty was a 40 goal rookie without Mitch. He will take around 290 shots no matter who he plays beside and his best s% was not last year with Mitch. MM was a 42 assist rookie RW and improved that to 47 while playing with Boz/Kadri. Matthews does not require perfect dishes to bury his chances and Marner does not need the top sniper in the league to create his offense. I don't believe JT chases 50 goals again without MM as he was a career 12.9% shooter in NY and 16.4% beside Marner. I don't believe Matthews shares enough that Marner will ever exceed 30 goals beside him.

I guess we'll see better this year if people can stay healthy but Tavares/Marner seemed like a complementary pair where Matthews/Marner seem like two really talented guys who will have a level of success because they are good, not because they are necessarily a fit.

If Matthews and Marner stay together for an extended time, I think they could develop into one of the most devastating duos in the league.
However, Tavares needs Marner more than Matthews, and Matthews will Still be a huge threat with Nylander.
So for me, I think switching Marner and Nylander would be a net gain.

Matthew's was really dominant last year but goals were only a small piece. JT is a person who seems to have unlocked Willy as well. I'm ok either way but changing lineups is not the way to find chemistry. Those 4 guys are playing well and will continue to improve.

It's really early but isn't Tavares leading the team in goals assist hence points?

Wouldn't mess with it now either.

Losing that weight is looking like it worked out. He split the D coast to coast a couple times and still fought off 3-4 guys on the boards and came out with the puck. Best of both worlds.

Also I don't know why people are saying he needs Marner, Nylander is a much heavier presence on the cycle and fits Tavares' game like a glove. I want to see Hyman swap in on LW more often, I don't think they'd lose the puck.

While it's not uncommon for a player's prime years to last into their mid 30's, it's also not uncommon for a player's production to significantly decrease starting at around 30 years old.

After last year I was very worried that Tavares may be the latter. But the beginning of this season has given me hope that he may be the former.

He's looked amazing this year. Our best player so far, no question.

One thing about JT that has never been a question mark is his Desire to win. It’s very obvious he is not afraid to put In the work. He looks unbelievable right now. I have been guilty of second guessing this signing at times. Not because of his play, just because of the trajectory the team went post JT. But he is really starting to change my mind. He is playing like a man possessed right now. And truthfully the way he plays, he makes his own luck. Hard work beats skill when skill doesn’t work hard. JT works hard and has skill. Deadly

I've always been curious why Tavares has taken heat when a good portion of posters have demanded our team work harder. He's the one guy you could count on. He was injured last year, had an off year and is now looking dominant, not because of skill (ala McDavid/Matthews) but because of dogged determination. He's a pro's pro.

It was also said before the start of last season that Tavares had an oblique injury. So that combined with the broken finger he suffered didn't help.
