What I hate about this deal more than anything is that it wasn't accompanied by a trade of one of our existing defenseman. If JML was brought in to replace Seids or Miller, great. But more than likely this pushes Morrow out of the lineup, which is a shame because he's looked good of late.

maybe the opposing GM had no interest in taking on the $$ of Seids and felt, like many here, Miller ain`t worth it?

Loads goes into why a deal goes though and doesn`t, all of it way out of my area of expertise

I like the addition of Liles to the top 4 but I'm still wondering how they're going to divvy everything up. One interesting thing they could do is pair Chara-Seidenberg up.

Yeah I wouldn't mind that either. Give it another go.

We may be in a situation that I was trying to push for before where our pairings become even more balanced out in terms of ice time.

Everyone plays just on either side of 20 minutes a night.

Krug - Miller
Chara - Seidenberg
Liles - Quaider

Not interested in Miller with Chara. I wanted someone who could play with Chara or someone that could make it so Seidenberg could play with Chara and play 25 a night. Then you could have Miller out there 12 minutes instead of 18.

EDIT: I can't read.

Let's see, over the past 3 seasons when compared with the current Bruins defensemen (leaving out Colin Miller and Joe Morrow)...
  • Liles is 4th in time on ice behind Chara, Krug and Seidenberg.
  • Liles has the 2nd best Relative CF% behind only Krug.
  • Liles is 3rd in primary assists behind Krug and Chara.
  • Liles has the most takeaways.
  • Liles has the 2nd lowest defensive zone start % ahead of only Krug. So, he has been sheltered a bit.

Here is how Liles matches up with regards to goals against per 60 since the 1st of the year. He's represented by the green line. For this chart, lower is better.

Should be worth mentioning Carolina was a damn good possession team this season and actually had good d-men to put Liles with.

Let's see how good that investment is when he gets paired up with many of the fine plugs taking space on this defense.

I want to wait and see before I ***** and moan.

I guess this is unpopular but I like Loui and I am glad he is still here. I hope they can sign him to a good deal.

From the Canes end:

"Liles is an excellent defenseman. He was one of our steadiest this year. I think Boston fans will be very happy with Liles. He doesn't have as much offensive flair as he did in his Colorado days but in return he's become a steadier presence in his own zone. It's a great tradeoff honestly. Liles knows his spots pretty well, moves the puck pretty well, and is excellent in the neutral zone. I actually really hope the Canes resign him for $2 or $2.5 million next year, even with our impending log jam on D. Liles is a much more effective D-man than Kris Russel. It's an absolute shame IMO that Russel's name vaulted him into absurd overpayment territory while a guy like Liles is getting basically a 3rd back. Very good value for Boston."

Lady what's your take behind the bench...is he a well liked dude?

Loui...Yes. he seems well liked. He talks and laughs with the other players.

I hope the b's can sign him. I told Loui Sunday I hope he was going to stay (when he walked by me) .

I am looking forward to tomorrow's game.

Dougie will be back  It will be interesting to see what kind of welcome the B's give him. I know some fans who are psyched about going to the game so they can boo loud every time Dougie is on the ice....Not me .

No one was taking on Seidenberg's contract, even with salary retained, unless the Bruins were going to take back an equally bad contract. Even the Leafs can only take on so many bad deals. The only way I see the Bruins ridding themselves of Seidenberg (who I don't hate BTW and is a decent 3rd pair guy) is to buy him out this summer or next.

It will be shame if Morrow is sitting next game and K.Miller is still playing. But that's likely where this is headed.

Well...this is a complete turn-around from the reaction when we got Liles.

"He's a #9 defenseman."

To

"He's probably the best 20 min a night defenseman anyone picked up."

Total spectrum flip.

If Liles has become even a little bit steady, the upgrade from Morrow to Liles is gigantic.

From what we've seen, I can't see playing Morrow in a playoff enviornment. Morrow is a gnat in the defensive zone. Hapless.

Keeping Loui means taking the playoffs seriously, even with our small chances.

This.

Just because Morrow looks better when the puck is on his stick than our other D men apart from Krug do when they have the puck doesn't mean he is an adequate D man for the playoffs given his poor D in his own end.

With Chara and Seids being old, Krug not doing well with the step up in responsibility, Quaider being limited, and Kevan having his issues and logging far too many minutes we really needed someone who could be pressed into a bigger role if need be.

Liles isn't amazing but he fits our needs.

But HF knows best. Most of the people whining wanted us to trade for Yandle, retain a ton of Z and Seids salaries to aquire mediocre draft picks, hope BU doesn't make the frozen four, and roll with a D pairing like this:

Yandle-Krug
Morrow-Colin Miller
Grizzz-Quaider

HFboards dream Bruins defense right there.

Well stated, the critical point is that Morrow is fine once the puck is delivered to his stick. But of course that leaves out so much.

Look, I don't hate Morrow. He needs growth. Normally, I'm all for one guy like Morrow as a #6, but of course not in the playoffs. Living with a guy like Morrow has been harder this year because of a weak corp with too many guys either trending down or not ready yet.

Anyone know if Liles can play the right-side, because the pieces sure fit better together if he can.

Chara - Liles
Krug - McQuaid
Morrow - Seidenberg

Liles can kill penalties, this much we know. So no need to play K.Miller as Claude would have his 4 PK D-men (33, 44, 54, and Liles).

He can also contribute on the PP. So leave Morrow on the 2nd unit and sub in Liles for Chara. Should allow for a more effective Chara now that he's not being asked to play both special teams.

But if he can only play the left side than it's a moot point. Morrow is clearly the one who will sit, rightly or wrongly.
