John Hynes is a fraud

Back in 2016-2017 the Devils allowed about 48 or 52 (forgot the exact number) shots on goal one game against Pittsburgh. Sidney Crosby tied the game from the side of the net with the goalie pulled with about 10-15 seconds left in regulation. I still can’t remember if it wound up an OT loss or a shootout one, but it definitely wasn’t a win.

When asked about why the team allowed so many shots and what he had to say about it, Hynes said something like “We look at the quality of shots and not necessarily the quantity” which came off as someone not too mad that his team had just allowed like 50 shots on goal. Maybe he was just trying not to throw a younger, rebuilding, non-skilled team under the bus by coming up with that “quality over quantity” comment, but I remember that pissed off a lot of Devils fans after he said that and I never took him seriously after that.

But I will say this in his defense, he does play the right goalie. He benched a very struggling Cory Schneider for Keith Kinkaid in 2018 and it got us into the playoffs.

He also said “Enough is enough with this shit” when he got into Minnesota and the Fleury as starter/1b thing immediately stopped. Evason got fired before he figured that out. And I like Evason as a head coach, I’ve liked that hire for Columbus from the start. But he had a real problem with not recognizing Gustavsson was his best goalie and continuing to roll with Fleury like he wasn’t living in the year 2023.

Don't see enough Wild games to have a solid opinion on Hynes.
Yes, his special teams suck, but there are coaches for that that might be more in line for blame.
Losing at the time potential MVP Kaprizov. Not his fault.
Losing top center Ek, not his fault.
Losing Brodin for long period, same.
Having a 15 million dollar handicap, not his doing.

Given the reported cohesion of the Wild locker room, I guess I'd sat the OP is full of beans. This team has no business being in the playoff picture, yet they are. Their trade deadline treasures were Nyquist and Brazeau.

I think Hynes has exceeded expectations in every way. His crap reputation preceded him, but here we are, <10 games away from the postseason.

For some reason this bum keeps getting hired. Has never won a playoff round and is the epitome of old boys club, recycled coach who will keep finding a job just because he knows some guys in USA hockey.

Minnesota is spiraling after being a top team for half the season. They will likely get passed by STL for the WC1 spot and may miss the playoffs entirely.

Before you tell me it’s cuz Kaprizov is out, STL is missing their #1D in Parayko and are the hottest team in the NHL. Montgomery is the real deal, Hynes is a bald fraud.

They looked good against the Devils both nights. I like how they always go to the net and are hungry for rebounds and deflections.

However, they look like they're missing a game breaking sniper.

Blues also have insane depth with youth. Wild were always boned until the buyouts finally dropped to a point they could add depth. I don’t think Hynes is the issue, it’s the ever growing rotund wanker, Bill Guerin. That lineup lacks some serious depth and losing Kaprizov and other injuries showed how badly constructed the roster always was.

Hynes is less the issue.

At what point did he become an "old boys club hire" - I guess once Minnesota brought him in?

As a Devils fan, I was glad when he left as it was clearly time for him to go at that point, but I also can't exactly fault him for just one playoff appearance there as he really didn't have a lot to work with, particularly given the goaltending situation.

Not sure Nashville offered a ton more, but he did make it to the playoffs 3 of his 4 years there (though when he took over season 1, that was the Covid year qualifying round). His final season with Nashville, they had 92 points - missing out on the playoffs by 3 points.

After taking over in Minnesota last year, the team went from a playing at a 60 point pace to a 95 point pace. This season, he has them in a playoff spot and playing at a 96 point pace despite significant injuries and nearly $15M in dead cap space.

I don't think he's a top coach in the league, but I also don't think he's some bum that needs to be thrown out of the league in favor of some random NCAA or AHL coach to avoid the "old boys club" label. Seems to have done a decent enough job in Minnesota so far.

He's one of the NHL's large group of mediocre coaches. I don't think that makes him a fraud though since I don't know of any people thinking he was particularly good. Like with most coaches give him a good roster and suddenly he looks good.

You should fight Hynes on live pay per view, I’d pay and so would a lot of people in this thread.

Watching a Hynes-coached team is almost physically painful, especially on defense. All those minute-plus games of keepaway and hoping for a lucky bounce outside of the zone for a clear made me want to pull my hair out when he was in NJ. All the criticisms I had during his time here were the exact same things Preds fans said about him.

No, injuries haven't helped his cause, but he always relies one ungodly good player. Hall in NJ, Josi in Nashville, now Kaprisov in Minny.

Good but not great roster, running near the salary cap floor with the 15m cap penalty, losing their top 10 player for 60% of the season.

The fact they're not fighting with San Jose and Chicago for the top lottery spot means that Hynes is a decent coach.

Interesting how fans of every team he's ever coached have nothing good to say about him, while all of the insiders in the old boys club always give rave reviews. Almost like his reputation is hollow and underserved & he stinks as a coach.
He speaks well, but I don’t think he is a strong tactical coach.

He also has weird eyes
He looks like player creation in NHL 2001.

Hynes has been a 1-and-done coach his entire career. One good year and then it's all downhill

When did Hynes ever have a good year?

This was a guy that got elite goaltending years from Saros, a core of Josi-Forsberg-Ekholm in their primes, and every single time he turned it into average regular seasons with quick playoff exits. He must have Dubas-level connections behind the scenes because yes, he is an absolute fraud.
