I'd be surprised if RSNs still exist in 10 years, even as streamers of some kind.Mets deal with SNY ends in 2030 I believe (maybe 2035?). I can definitely see Steve Cohen creating his own network. As it stands now, SNY doesn't share much profit with the Mets. Which is pretty much antithetical to having a regional sports network owned by the (at the time) teams owners.
The model that's made sports teams rich is dying. The RSNs were bundled with a bunch of other channels. If you only cared about one of those channels, didn't matter, you got them all and the cable company charged for all of them. So the RSNs got 10 subs even if only 3 of the 10 actually wanted them. In addition to the ad revenue, this sub model is what drove their profits.
When they go to all streaming, it will just be those 3 of the 10 buying (the ones who actually watch the product), and they'll lose the other 7 subs' revenue.
Teams are going to need to figure out something else to make their money.
I think only the NFL will be impervious to this, as they have no local RSN deals and it's all national OTA broadcast for all games, which the MLB, NHL and NBA don't have.
