Player Discussion John Beecher

I am not a big fan. He has speed and size but below average skill and average sense. I think he would be better on the wing. That might be average skill and below average sense lol.

Btw I said in Facebook group he would be lucky to be Joe Colbornne. He responded with "really." Embarrassing and shows you what I know......

Wait, what? Beecher responded to you with a ‘really’?

I like Beecher but Colborne did have a 19 goal 44 point season in 73 games

That said basically he was a stiff and horrible pick

They passed on John Carlson who Eric lobbied on HF to take for a month leading up

Yep, that seems well out of Beecher's range.

Roman Josi was available too, But Carlson would have been good enough.

Is he waiver exempt? A few games in Prov to work on his scoring like Poitras has been given could help.
 
I find him a bit disappointing. Another player with speed and size but does not appear overly physical.

Finish hits hard and forecheck, few other expectations. Can Kastelic have a word with the number of size players who hardly finish a heavy hits?

Even a Kuraly mold would be ideal for a 4th liner with speed and size.

All true. Beecher would be a much more effective player if he got in on the forecheck and was all over the defenders using his god-given size and speed.

He’ll be 24 in April, so while he isn’t exactly a block of clay, he still has some room to improve. Kuraly didn’t really establish himself until his age 25 season. Beecher seems like a good pro, if he can just commit himself to a somewhat more physical approach and come up with some timely scoring on occasion, he’ll be a solid 4th liner for years to come.

I’m not holding out hope because if physicality isn’t in a players game from a young age, it’s hard to manufacturer over sustained periods as a pro, but we’ll see.

At this point I think it's safe to conclude that Beecher is just one of those players who is around for a few years in a bottom 6 role and then he's gone and another player takes that spot for a couple years. He's not much of a bright spot in the role he has but it's not like he will be part of the plan for the next 3-5 years. He's pretty nondescript.

It's not a big deal aside from the fact that they used a 1st round pick on him but 2019 did not turn out to be the strongest draft class, so... whatever I guess. They passed over a few players taken shortly after him that would be nice to have but that's hardly uncommon. As long as you aren't saying that about a bunch of your drafts...

He's a very limited player. Tons of speed, defends well, great at face-offs, and terrible hands... but I wouldn't say he's a bust. He was drafted 30th overall and is 36th in his draft year in games played, 40th in scoring. There are 8 or 9 guys drafted ahead of him who haven't played 100 games yet (and don't look like they're going to). Getting a player at all, in the 30-60 range is a win.

He was drafted to be a bottom six defensive player with very limited offensive upside, and he has become that. Not sure what people were expecting.

He started the season well, actually. I think expectation for me was a Kuraly/Nosek type which is not unreasonable for a late first rounder. It was also a weak draft class past the mid first round as @PlayMakers alluded to, so there’s that. He wasn’t really a swing and a miss where he was taken and for who was available but I expected a bit more.
 
If he played with any tempo or energy..... he'd be a player that I'd look to keep for the rebuild. As it stands, if he weren't a Sweeney 1st round pick, American, and former college hockey player.... I don't think he's in the league. Pure nothingness. And seemingly content to be that way.

In the same category as Coyle and Carlo emotionally. This is the type of personality that I would like to steer away from.

His early rookie season was so good that I thought we had a foundational piece of a future 4th line, and yet somehow he's regressed from even staying in the lineup

Yeah man… I don’t know.

If you take a guy in the first round and after five years of developing the kid, all you get is a middle-of-the-road fourth line player that you can grab for a buck any offseason… is that really a win?

It’s not an L exactly. It’s better than nuthin’. But realistically, it’s really more of a push.

4th line player in a league that recycles through 4th line players like soda cans. Strong on face-offs but we don't know how much of his face-off work is skewed to taking draws on his strong side. Otherwise never does anything that makes you sit back and say "yup, I want him in my line-up". One of those guys who looks the part but when the puck ends up on their stick they don't know what to do with it.

With Sweeney at the helm I expect him back next year quite frankly.
