Think we can use this deal as a benchmark to judge Leaf's scrutiny. eg. Brian Burke? You're a bitter old man who's been left behind the times.

Joe Thornton had 12 less even-strength minutes last year compared to Mitch Marner. He played on a team where Marleau cracked their top-6 in goals/60 ration.
We got better goal production out of Timashov and Nicholas Shore! This playmaker wasn't exactly setting up some major goal-scorers. You look at his ice-time,
he could of filled in Mikheyev's 5-on-5, yet he's going to come in no more expensive then Frederik Gauthier. If all he does is 4th line duties, that's terrific! At the
worst, he gets hurt, is a huge positive influence in the dressing room while some young player gets in anyways.

Anyone in the media who is tearing apart the Leafs, Thornton, Dubas, etc... should have to have IDIOT tattooed their their forehead or something.
They're all just 'insiders' who are decidedly on the outside. It makes them bitter, I guess.

Saw this online, pretty funny actually.

Lehtonen will be on the PP.
I can see Simmonds in front of the net too.

I like the loss of the beard but “ole” Joe looks a little like he is 51 not 41? Must have caught him on an off day I’m sure? Cheap depth add, of a guy who has pretty much done everything in the hockey world except hoist a Cup. Reminds me a bit of the World Series Blue Jays team when they added a Winfield or a Molitor. Only thing that has me a little concerned is we already have a few of these types of players (Spezza, Simmonds) that are later on in their careers but again fairly low risk add and can’t see how it hurts us significantly if it doesn’t work out. Classy St Thomas kid, hope he is skating around the rink with a Cup hoisted above his head come season end.

The big 4 have not once cared about their personal stats. Every single one of them has stated over and over again that the teams success is all they care about and not their individual accolades. I'm not sure where your narrative is coming from. 3 of the big 4 are still young and growing and will improve overtime. JT has been a good player for us and tries his ass off every game. The guy has been ineffective at times and neutralized but it's not because of a lack of effort. There hasn't been one single player on this team who has "mailed it in" or is playing for a big pay day.

My point is that the people that are claiming that the addition of these veteran players will be good role models and rub off on the young guys is false. We have had those players already as I listed and the young guys are wildly inconsistent. This has been noted by almost everyone that has watched the team.
Inconsistent means that sometimes they show up to play and sometimes they do not.
As far as your comment "there hasn't been a single player who has mailed it in, we will have to disagree on that.
As far as your point that not a single player has played for a big pay day I think that is wrong as well. Most players play for the highest contract they can get, the difference here is that they got paid mega bucks before they have accomplished anything as a team.
When you step up and take the big bucks it is your duty to earn it.
When those 4 contracts are the reason that the Leafs are shopping from the bargain bin and reclamation pile they don't get to take so many nights off.

While I don't disagree Marners a great passes, it's tough to compare their points given the era. Thornton was breaking out in the black hole offense NHL.

At his peak, Thornton was a Hart trophy winner and the league's leading scorer. We'll all be very happy if Mitch reaches that level, but I'm not sure he has the scoring ability to do it.

Side note, would have been very interesting to watch Mitch specifically, but even this whole team in a 05-07 type NHL environment
If you're going to compare eras then, I believe for their first 5 seasons even ERA adjusted, Marner is still the better producer. And Thornton's peak coincided around post-lockout when the league was handing out powerplays like candy...Like seriously...go look at the powerplay time the players in that era got and compare it to today.

You're right on the timing of his true peak, which is why I referenced the 05-07 timeline. He was still the leading scorer there though, so the best of the best production-wise for at least a season.

Marners definitely been better to start his career. Joe had an awful rookie season and it took a few years before people even thought he was better than Samsonov

this right here is the reason he just won the city over. now if city can do the same...it'd be great.

One thing I always loved about Joe was his sense of humor
I always thought him and Scott Gomez were the funniest guy in NHL.

I'd imagine Lehtonen gets the nod for QBing PP2... I'd like to see Robertson there if he sticks as well obviously, but if not:

Simmonds net front
Spezza/Thornton on the half wall
Kerfoot in the middle
Lehtonen point

Damn... that's a highly skilled 2nd unit. Not that they'll get much ice time but from a strictly skill POV, that's pretty insane

Mikheyev will probably be on the PP. Probably over Spezza or Kerfoot

It's going to take a while to process this move. So strange to think about Jumbo in a Leafs jersey. I kind of love it, but it's still strange.

I was against the idea when it was just a rumour. But mostly that's just because I think we already have Spezza doing the same job. I figured signing Joe would be a bit insulting to Spezza.

But apparently they talked to eachother about it, and who would wear #19. If they can co-exist, nd Keefe can find a role for both of them, then this is going to be a great move.

Jason Spezza and Joe Thornton are Leafs. And all for under 1.5 million combined. Can't complain at all. I wouldn't care if they were in their 50s. "Old man strength" is a thing.

How could I forget mikheyev fml.
Mikheyev
Kerfoot
Spezza
Thornton
Robertson
Lehtonen
Simmonds

Man hard to say who makes the cut. I'd imagine mikheyev is a staple. Aside from that all bets are off. Should be interesting to see who makes it.

Because he IS worth 3.5mm.
If you think Kerfoot is a 3.5M player you're delusional. Colarado signed him to keep him and overpaid him because they needed the decent players they had and had no better options at the time.
