Joe Sakic - best modern day comparable?

The variance in replies here really shows there isn't a great comparable.

If you wanna talk purely accolades and stats, it's probably Patrick Kane.

In terms of play style, im going to say Sakic was a rich man's Jeff Carter. Great skating with a lethal wrist shot, and Carter once he was in LA was very underrated defensively.

I like that comparison, forgot about Carter

The closes I can think of is Tavares. However Tavares doesn’t have a laser wrist shot, so the next closes thing I can really think of is Tyler seguin in terms of talent and also a centre man that can score goals and he’s not that much bigger at 6’1 200 Sakic being 5’11 and 190. Tyler scored 40 , 37 on 2 other occasions and 33 on another 2 occasions while being a centre.
everyone else is so much bigger. Matthews is 6’3 217, carter is 6’3, eichel is 6’2 although in terms of playing style Matthews might be the modern day Sakic seguin is the closes thing.

Backstrom. Backstrom might be a better passer and Sakic is obviously a better shooter but the way they play the game with the puck and see the ice is very similar.

The Seguin comparison is an interesting one.

Backstrom and Seguin mentions are pretty good.

This may sound odd but even though he’s a dman, Makar reminds me of Sakic. Super quiet and humble, great skater, elite wrist shot, same size, not super physical but not afraid to engage, great vision to control the game and transition the puck

Came here to say Seguin for play style/skillset, though obviously its Seguin at his absolute highest peak and even then he's at least a tier below Sakic. But as a good-skating center with an elite shot and good playmaking sills, not overly physical but can withstand some physical play, its Seguin. Performance-wise, Sakic is on a different planet. Looking ahead, Point is the one guy I think will develop into a Sakic-type player. He's already better defensively than Sakic was at that point in his career, has the playoff/clutch scoring thing going for him like Sakic did, good motor, rugged enough physically, quiet, seems to be a good lead-by-example type. Interestingly, both guys came out of the WHL and both were knocked going into their respective drafts for their skating ability, but praised for their hockey IQ.

He once stuck his hand in a snow blower while it was on

No he didn't. His snow blower jammed so he started removing snow from it by hand after he turned it off. The problem was that the jam left the auger torqued. When he removed enough snow, the energy in the auger released, causing it to turn, and messing up his hand.

He was a bright, intelligent, 39-year-old who made a mistake. He put his hand where he shouldn't have.
