How good was he when he played? I remember he got a problem with the heart and had to stop playing which sucked. But was he ever any good? What was his style?

He was a perfect partner as a kid for Chelios back before Chelios' wheels fell off. Big, strong, super mobile, good pass, good shot. The lockout was huge for him developmentally as he got to play a much bigger role than he ever did for us. That he pretty much lost all of '02-'03 with an ACL issue and '03-'04 getting back into the swing of things. Then coming out of the lockout he was having by far his strongest start. Then the heart issue. He was shaping into a great #2-3 kind of guy. Do everything but run a PP.

I was watching that game when he collapsed. Scary stuff. But I guess if you're gonna have a medical emergency a decent place to be is a hockey arena. Glad he was able to stay with the game.

He was on the way to became the next Chris Pronger.

Was extremely great at 2004 World Cup with Zidlicky for Czechs. Also started 2005-06 season great... then it did end.
I think saying he was on the way to the next Chris Pronger was a bit much, but he was a good Dman.

Fischer was one of those guys who had a lot of tools but couldn't seem put it all together early in his career. However he really was finding his game his last couple seasons when the heart thing happened.

yeah, chris pronger would have taken a helluva leap in play, which is no offense to Fischer. Pronger was just that good. I think Fischer was rounding into a Brad Stuart guy. Eat 20+ hard minutes a night, put up twenty-ish points, and nasty to play against.

A pre-heart issue Jiri Fischer would be a perfect addition to this roster right now. Just a super-stable force on the backend, allowing our fleet of PMDs to do their thing.

I want a Jiri Fischer.

Dear hockey gods, please deliver to us a Jiri Fischer.

Pronger is bit too much , but very good top 4 yes.

He was turning into a great shutdown D with a little bit of offense. If the heart problem doesn’t happen then Detroit probably doesn’t trade for Brad Stuart.

This is still my favorite Fischer moment.

Love it. Watching that, he seems slower than I remember, but then again, the NHL was a slower-paced game 20 years ago, so I suppose he wasn't slow for the time.

A lesser version of Pronger, sure. But Pronger was a Hart Winner and one of the best D to ever play the game. I dont think Jiri hits that level if he kept playing.

IMO he was a solid #2 or #3 D on a contender.

Best Fischer moment ever! Fun fact my fat little 14 year old ass was in those stands in Nashville screaming at all the hicks there that night. (I don't mean hicks as offensive, I have family from there.)

That's awesome you were there. I remember this well, soooo satisfying. Hartnell never expected that left jab haha. Love proud papa bear Chelios giving him a tap on his way down the tunnel.

I remember some blurb from back in the day when teams were doing mini-skills competitions during training camp and I swear Jiri won hardest shot and fastest skater one year.

The other thing I thought of after my post was that perhaps that clip was around the time Jiri was battling injuries, or coming back from one? Maybe he wasn't 100% there. Either way, he was awesome that last year and half he played.

He did. Straight line Fischer could fly when he wanted. He also had a howitzer of a shot but his windup needed work.

I remember him at prospect camp after getting drafted and his end was always clean in scrimmages. First to the puck on retrievals and quick to move it out. The dude really bulked up after a few years. He was a fitness freak.

He was a fun player to follow, early in his career it was really uncertain, he seemed to have a lot ongoing for him great frame and the strength to be a shut down D but his decision making and mobility looked like they would limit him and lockouts and injury seemed to delay and delay development.

His last season and even last few game you could see it though, he was putting it together starting to see the ice and his mobility and shot improved a lot. I wouldn't go as far as to say he was going to be elite, but he was certainly going to be good to very good.

I wish I could find that picture of him doing the crazy eyes.

I'd be pleased as Punch to have a Jiri Fischer on our current team.

I hope Jiri Slegr sends Fischer a thank you card every June for getting his name on the Cup.

Or should he be sending it to Shane Willis?

Fischer was only 25-years old when the Red Wings curse struck again, he was just entering his prime. With better "luck" in the early/mid 2000's, Red Wings top-4 could have look like this

Lidström - Kronwall
Fischer - Konstantinov

Couple of kings and a couple of prince's, a smooth transition from Lidström & Konstantinov era to Kronwall & Fischer era in 2008 - 2010 period. What a moments we could have been witnessing :(

I still dream of prime Konstantinov and prime Kronwall on a line together. The destruction they would inflict would be glorious.

I know their playing timelines dont really match up great, but still would be fun.

He was developing well into a #2 Dman maybe. That was an emotional game to watch...the players bringing his partner across the ice to the bench. Thank somebody for defibrillators.
