Speculation: Jimmy Howard value as a UFA if he gets bought out.

Bill Peters was around Detroit for some of Howard's best years and the Cane's current goaltending group is weak. If they could ship out Lack to a team looking for a backup they might be interested in Howard as a UFA. All depends on what Peters thinks.
Is that a Lack for Howard trade then?

At the very earliest Holland wouldn't buy out Howard until next summer, And that's if Holland leaves Howard unprotected and he will. And Vegas say chooses MAF instead then it's possible that he could be bought out but i would be shocked if it happened now.
While I don't think Howard will be happy playing a backup in Detroit, he still has to add Vegas to his list before Holland can expose him in the draft. IMO, if Holland doesn't have it written down already to have Howards OK, I'm buying him out in the 2nd buyout period. No way should he risk losing Mrazek to an expansion draft because he has to protect Howard. That'd get him fired.

Who is going to challenge Mike Smith in ARZ? nobody

According to this thread, Jimmy Howard on a cheap deal after he's bought out.

But as was stated with the resigning Domingue that's extremely unlikely - just like Howard being bought out in the first place.

How is this? Howie has a no "trade" clause - not a no "movement" clause. Being selected in the expansion draft is not a trade, so it should not be affected by Howie's limited NTC. If there was some guidance on this by the NHL that I have missed, my apologies in advance.

Leafs would probably take him on a 1 year deal if we don't sign Jonas Enroth.

Depending on Mike Babcock's feelings on him of course

Couldn't imagine Babcock wouldn't want him. He's obviously seen a lot of Babcock's defensive systems and could help in a lot of ways in addition to being a solid back-up.

Probably crappy for him personally. You couldn't pick a worse time of year to be bought out as a goalie.

I don't think Detroit does it. From what I've seen, they don't need to buy him out, and it wouldn't be a cheap buyout either. It's a lot of money for 2 goalies though, when only 1 can play every game.

They'll wait for another summer. If Las Vegas expansion will pick him, fine, if not, then a buyout.

So I have seen speculation on these boards from wings fans and fans in general that the wings will buy out Howard next month when the 2nd buy out window opens.

If they do that where does he go? what does get? most teams have their starters so does he accept a backup role?

or do you think they keep him?

If he stays Howard still has 3 years @ 5.2 per, must be the starter amirite? :sarcasm:

Mike Smith is definitely worse than Howard in my mind.

The big difference is that Mike Smith hasn't been outplayed by another goalie on the team. Smith has been inconsistent, but still had stretches of better play then Howard in recent seasons.

Better than the start of Howard's 14-15 season?

Well, Smith had a better W/L, Save% and GAA this past season on a worse team then Howard?
And the season prior Jimmy Howard was superior in each of those categories.

Actually the past 4 years they've alternated with Jimmy Howard making 2 all-star games. Hey, they both are bottom tier starters so let's not make a big deal out of who thinks who is better.

Nsh could sign him to ease the load off Rinne, if he came cheap enough. Assuming we haven't spent the remaining cap upgrading our offense.

Idk if Poile is looking for a backup tho. If he is I'm sure he's reached out to Enroth aswell. We'll see...

Wrong!

My opinion is not stated in the OP which you quoted, there are several questions hence the ? at the end of lines 2 and 3 but no opinion. My opinion can't be wrong because it is not stated in the OP which you quoted

My opinion is apparently wrong based on one stat in which they are separated by .005 and Bernier is as good as Schneider, k.
