I love Hughson, but it's probably because I grew up with him calling the NHL games I played as kid

Hughson is terrible. Monotone as ****. Give me Bob Cole over him any day of the week.

Agreed. Hughson sucks big time.

For me the worst part about him, after getting to hear Bob Cole again, is that he never shuts the **** up. He is always calling the game, he never lets it breathe for a few seconds. And he's also fairly negative IMO and makes games less fun than they should be.

Who cares? He's awful and dull as many other posters have concluded. Also, they're comparing him to Cole who has, albeit, slipped in his quality of play-by-play but most are still saying Cole is miles better and has 'excitement' in his voice compared to the bland Hughson.

If you don't like him, that's cool, but saying he isn't real talent and implying Rogers cheaped out is wrong in this particular instance.

i'd rather hear someone call the right play with some enthusiasm, than someone call the wrong play with a lot of enthusiasm

Precisely. Hughson is a Vancouver guy through and through. I don't think he does a bad job per se, but Lord help you if you're watching a _______ vs. Canucks game and aren't a Canucks fan. Absolutely insufferable.

Worse is when he waxes eloquent about the Canucks and they aren't even playing that night. Call the game you're watching I don't care what the Canucks are doing on their day off.

Hughson is awful and doesn't seem to care unless his precious Canucks are playing. Combine that with Simpson doing colour and it's terrible.

Cole, with all due respect, should have been kindly told to retire ages ago. Romanuk's energy is there but he might be even worse than Cole and Cherry when it comes to mispronouncing names.

TSN has the cream of the crop in Cuthbert and Miller, who is the best play-by-play announcer in the game. The CBC announcers are collectively bad and there's only 1, maximum 2, good local Sportsnet broadcast teams. Yay Rogers!!!

As a Vancouver fan he is awsome. Ha!! Now you guys know what it feels to listen to all your Toronto biased crap! :handclap:

The difference is all the people you claim are Leaf fans rip them constantly. Meanwhile, Hughson hosts retirement ceremonies for Canuck players.

Listening to him is like listening to 1980's workplace safety videos.
He does have his moments, but for the most part he's terrible. Very boring.

Why is he the go to guy for HNIC? He delivers little to no emotion unless its a team he favors, if the game doesn't feature a team he cares for there is zero emotion.

Most games he has a favorite and its unbearable, the narrative ruins the broadcast.

I see people rip on Bob Cole all the time but hell at least he is excited when something happens.

Romanuk gets fired up too, real excitement in his calls.

Rogers just doesn't seem to be able to make the correct call on anything.

He's still decent, but if you listen to his older stuff he has more emotion and excitement in his voice.

Cuthbert is still the best in the biz to me.

My thoughts exactly. It may some nostalgia from the days when he called the NHL video games but I've never really noticed him being too biased towards one team. He's certainly in my top 3 with Miller and Cole.

I started listening to him in the early 90's when he was with TSN, so it could be nostalgia for me too. I always found he was really into the games, so it's surprising to me that so many people say he's boring.

He's got a good voice and calls a good game, but I agree that he shows little emotion. I don't enjoy watching games he's calling for that reason.

I loved Hughson years ago, but he seems pretty boring nowadays, that whole crew does. I don't mind him calling a game, but I'm pretty indifferent to him these days.

Hughson is far from monotone, but he does have a very smooth sounding voice which I think people who haven't been listening to him for years mistake as monotony
He's great to know when you need to look at the TV.

Romanuk I can't stand. Cole, if you ignore what he's saying and just listen to his voice is still great... But his actual play by play is wretched now.

Totally agree with the original post. Hughson is sooooo boring. Rather than entertain like Bob Cole, Danny Gallivan, Dan Kelly, Doc Emrick etc. we get a steady diet of line matchups, line matchups, line matchups. Okay Hughson we get it. You can identify the line matchups. When not boring us with that topic, he switches over to individual icetime minutes. And then his sidekick Simpson starts every single comment he makes with "Well.....".

When I sit down on a Saturday night to take in a hockey game, I don't want Mr. Analytics putting me to sleep. I want to be entertained.

Hughson has a boring voice, adds zero drama to the game, and seems to have caught the Pierre Maguire virus (which causes announcers to try and prove how much they know about the game).

Of course, Sporstnet's intermissions are so boring, why should anyone be surprised that their in-game presentation is equally lame?

Cant tolerate Hughson anymore. Maybe 20 years ago he was good but now hes just SOOO Boring to listen to.

Didnt he call Blue Jays games for a couple seasons back when CBC was broadcasting Jays games?

He's their go-to guy because he's without question their best play-by-play talent.

Bob Cole has crossed the rubicon from charmingly eccentric to straight-up bad. It's not his fault, he just can't follow or process the game at speed. His calls are a lot of very-excited sounding gibberish.

Hughson and Simpson are definitely up there on my list for being great.

Nobody beats Gord Miller and Ferraro though, second to none.

Like Bob Cole just for the nostalgia,

And Chris Cuthbert calls all the Roughrider games so feels like it should be summer time when I hear his voice

It kills me when something is going on during the play and you have Hughson and Simpson talking about nothing to do with the game or play at hand.

I don't want to hear your pointless drivel. Call the ****ing game! Too many times have I heard him stop mid sentence and say ...and he scores...with little to no excitement. CALL THE ****ING GAME!

Yeah, I don't remember when, but he did Blue Jays games for TSN before Shulman started, so this would have been back in the 90's. He was paired with Buck Martinez.

Hughson is not bad, probably the best Rogers has. Miller and Cuthbert are however easily better. Absolutely nauseating to hear him call a Canucks game. He's dragged down by Simpson and Healy, who haven't had an insightful thought between them for years, and god if him and Simpson get going on matchups the whole broadcast goes to ****. They should try Johnson with him.

Would love to see Rick Ball get a shot at a couple national broadcasts, he's been the best PBP guy the Flames have had for a while(which is not exactly saying a lot).
