Prospect Info: Jett Woo, Pt. II

Jett Woo has shown slow, but steady progress in Abbotsford....and he's probably in the midst of his best stretch of games in his pro career.

But for the first time in a number of seasons, the Canucks are riding high and striving to win every night. Woo is a lot better off playing big minutes in Abby, as opposed to getting 10 minutes in Vancouver or being a healthy scratch for a game or two.

Any updates on his progress? Offensive numbers are encouraging, how has his all-around game developed?

Sounds like he's had a really up and down season, and at times this year I was wondering if they'd even qualify him.

Would still like to see him get a couple NHL games this season, but looks like that ship has sailed. No real sense at all whether he's someone the FO sees as a future main roster piece, a key AHL piece, or just peace out.

I just don't understand why we wouldn't try him out and give whatever player is injured a chance to rest up, we already made the playoffs.

He started really well through October-November and then in late November he was concussed when Calgary's goon cross-checked him in the face. Really struggled and looked tentative after his return and his play in December-January was a regression to what he was doing a couple years ago. Then he's picked it up again in the past 6 weeks and is playing the best hockey of his career.

9 points in his first 17 games before the injury and 17 in his last 20.

Nope.

He's a guy that will carve out a nice minor league/Europe career for himself but isn't likely to ever stick for any amount of time in the NHL. He'll forever be the 11/12th guy on the depth chart.

Those 8 are for sure ahead of him. EP2 will be ahead of him in short order if he isn't already. McWard is arguably ahead of him. Then you have Willander coming in the near future. The canucks aren't talent deep on the backend and he's still way down the list.

Emberson is an excellent player. Woo isn't in the same league.

I've always figured Woo would end up in Winnipeg at some point given his very deep roots there plus the fact that he explodes offensively whenever he plays the Moose with the Jets' management presumably watching.

Anyway, one has to believe that his physicality among his other traits will be enough for some team to take a flier at some point.

His whole family has been in Winnipeg for several generations and his grandparents have a popular Chinese restaurant chain there.

Woo was the only WHL d-man that was drafted in the first 6 rounds of the draft under Benning.

Just never got a chance here and the timing was never right, unfortunate injuries. I think he could have carved out a spot as a bottom pairing guy.

On the topic though, who were the notable WHL Dmen we missed out on during that time? I am blanking out on names. Even in terms of guys we bypassed to make our selection (like scream at the TV type) I can't think of anybody that stuck out that became anything in the NHL. I know for a while you liked Josh Brook over Gadjovich.

Think we got to go back to the Gillis era. Mallet over Severson is an obvious one. Of course, Dmen tend not to be as sexy of a pick. Don't think many of us had Skjei over Gaunce for example.

While he probably wouldn't have been the right pick in the spot, given I think Garland went right around there, getting Ethan Bear out of the 4th round or whatever would have certainly been a better result than whoever they took.

Well we drafted Zhukenov and Carrier (QMJHL) went right after. Then we went to the Q and drafted Neill. That 2015 5th round would be a decent 2nd round in a lot of drafts.

One would think Delorme has watched Bear play.

When you say "apparently" was this based on any reports? They were obvious candidates to be selected given where the two were ranked and team needs etc. but other than that I haven't come across anything reporting that said one of them was on top of the list before Hoglander was moved up.
