Jets Upcoming Free Agents

Why is Ehlers leving here again? Wasn't it because of usage?

If he goes to MTL, he's on the 2nd line behind Caufield and Slaf... so he's basically just leaving here to play the same 2nd line role on a non-contender?
Yeah I don't see a first line spot for him, they would need to move Cole or their 1OA who is coming into his own and not sure I see it happening, at least not long term anyways, and indeed they are a good 3-4 seasons away from truly contending maybe more and Nik is not going to a team that is not in win right now mode.

Personally I have no doubt Nik re-signs with us but if he does move I highly doubt it's to Montreal.

Cheveldayoff publicly said he’s had discussions with Toews. So yes, I would say that “anyone” is Cheveldayoff and company.

Is Winnipeg Toews’s #1 choice? Possibly. On other hand, is Toews using Winnipeg to get a better offer elsewhere… also possible.
The agent for Toews is Pat Brisson and says he will be fielding offers until July 1st, so a lot can happen in that time, including a big offer from some over zealous GM.

I still think Towes will want to finish his career in his home town, if Chevy is competitive $$ dollar wise, and I think he will be. If another team offers $ 1 to $ 1.5 mil more, then we could lose him.

I’d really like to see Towes land here in Winnipeg, as I think he can help the Jets a lot.

Just a gut feel, but I think the Jets are his # 1 desired destination.

They need a 2C just as much as we do... so i wouldnt spend $$ on ehlers if i was them

Ehlers-suzuki-caufield
Slaf-laine-demidov

Would be an interesting top six... laine was decent as a center

Ehlers could be a really good combo with kapanen...

Laine is not a decent anything anymore, well maybe his shot is still elite but unless the opposing team just stands there and let's him have free reign esp on the PP it's more or less useless.

OK, so 5 guys out of thousands. Find 5 or 10 more individuals and it won't tilt the scales. It will still be a list of exceptions to the rule. Most hockey players are toast by 37-38 years old, even among the top tier players.

Not saying that Toews can't be added to that list. But assuming that he will is ludicrous. Maybe he will, maybe he won't. Won't is more likely.

No one is assuming anything. Literally every single post is people predicating it on whether he can still play. But I'd rather he comes to our team and fizzles out then goes to a team like Colorado and ends up being exactly what they need.

Is he worse than dvorak though?

Dvorak is significantly better at faceoffs, like miles better. Plays a better defensive game as well. I think you just stapled Laine to your 4th line and then bring him in on the PP. That's about all he's good for now. He's just a PP merchant.

Yup, it's about taking a risk on a once HOF caliber player that was forced out due to illness.

My expectations are Perry like contributions at his age. But I'm not going to rule out that he might surprise and contribute more. If he Flames out then we risked nothing but some cap space.

Exactly it's really not that risky of a move. We give up nothing, we see what he's got. If it's there and he can be a bottom 6 contributor then we're golden. If he on the off chance has a lot more to give still then we are looking at possibly being more of a contender this coming season.

Expect the baseline and go from there. Can he be a 3C while Lowry is out and a 4C when Lowry comes back? That's really all we can ask of him. If he shows he's got more then we move him up and go from there.

I'm coming from a different perspective. I'm cheering for him to blossom and flourish no matter where he plays. Would love to see it happen in a Jets uniform.

We have to many Rasmus's on the bottom six. We need a couple of bangers and a couple of scorers on the bottom six and he is neither.

Yup. His job was taken by Barron. He has a whopping 9 points in his last almost 90 games and imo was on borrowed time in the NHL.

I think it was either go to Europe or start to be treated like a Toninoto type that bounces between the AHL and NHL as a tweener. I don't really blame him for choosing Europe if that is what he was looking at.

But he still got NHL money for half a decade and got enough games to qualify for a pension so he didn't do too bad.

At 25 maybe he finds his scoring touch over there but his time is done with the Jets and probably the NHL

Interesting development. Well that's one chess piece off the board.

Still in Play to Sign:
Ehlers
Vilardi
Samberg
Rashevsky
Barron
Toews?
Tanev
Apples

In Play to Trade:
Schenn
Stanley

Still $26,463,810 in cap space left.

Uhhh, no. There have been a few posts assuming he will not only be able to play, but will be a real difference maker. It is those posts I'm reacting to.

I'm all in favour of giving him a shot. I'm hopeful that he could be a difference maker in the bottom 6. With Barron presumably playing 3C to start the season Toews at 4C might be very good.
