Jets Upcoming Free Agents

Why wouldn’t this be his preferred destination? Is there a better team who has the cap space? If he wants to be the man, make more than he is worth then the Jets can’t compete with Vancouver or Chicago. If he wants to win, get paid a fair contract the Jets are probably the best spot. If he wants to be a rich loser on a team that feeds his ego the Jets have no chance.

The deadline is when the Jets make their first move to replace him. It’s not like they have one plan. If something happens there will be alternative plans. It’s not like if the Jets say the deadline is June 29 (for whatever weird reason) and on the 30th Ehlers wants to stay and he is the best option they will still sign him.

I'm stating my opinion on what I feel he's thinking. No different then anyone else. A couple of the plugged in media types also seem to think he's leaning that way.

There are other teams then us that can offer a fair contract and a chance to win like Carolina for instance. Although the Canes likely can also offer a top line wing slot as well.

The Islanders are another team that has a lot of quality down the middle and on defense but are missing an impact winger or two. He could get paid well there and be the missing piece to help unlock that offense playing top line minutes.

There will be plenty of different options and teams available to him.

I say this as a huge fan of Nik's but if a team wants to give him anything over 8M I say thanks for the memories and enjoy the rest of your career.
8m for how long though?
I'd easily give him that over 6 years.
I'd go as high as 8.5m x 7 years.
5 x 10m would be better.

You would give Ehlers 10 mil? That sounds expensive. I would rather sign him long term with the understanding that he will go on LTIR long term after season 5 the way Price did. That way it doesn't affect the cap.

I don't get this at all.

Why?

Yeah, why?

Based on his expiring cap hit (6m) and the current salary cap (88m) a straight translation to the new salary cap at the same %hit would be just over 6.5m.
He'll want a true raise (not just % of the cap increase) so then the question becomes is a 2m raise enough?
How many other teams would go above that?
Perhaps for Nik it's more about playing opportunity (and salary).
i.e. if someone comes along with the same offer (slightly better) and maybe a better tax situation and says they have a top line spot for him...
That could be tough for him to turn down.

The issue may be the lack of impact UFA players pushing up his demand.
The increasing cap allows GM's to make dumb moves (over pay).
So it could be tough to keep him.
It seems like it will be much harder to replace him for us and that him leaving could really hamper our window the next 2 to 3 years.
Does that situation make an 8.25/8.5/8.75 type offer more palatable for the Jets knowing that him leaving means a massive drop off on the roster and whatever the much less effective/skilled replacement would be.

If you overpay him what will Connor want?

CapWages has projected cap and terms at…

Ehlers - 8,106,756 x 6yrs, raise of 2,106,756
Vilardi - 6,820,610 x 4yrs, raise of 3,083,110
Samberg - 5,216,688 x 5yrs, raise of 3,816,688

Totaling - 20,144,054
Toatal raised - 9,006,554

Projected salary cap for next season is 95,500,000, raise of 7,000,000

Without losing some cap, we aren’t signing all 3.

We currently have 26 million in cap space so yes we could afford it. The issue is that the year after Perfetti, Connor, and Lowry are all due large raises as well which will need to be factored in by Chevy.

As long as we let Appleton, Tanev, and Toninato walk…and, IMO, we should trade Heinola too

Toninato is a league minimum type deal so he or whoever replaces him from the Moose is a wash. But yes the org really can't throw big money at a couple depth pieces if they hope to upgrade other roster spots.
We also need to make a decision on Heinola…either play him or move him and give his money to Fleury or whoever

I agree. She pretty much made a significant professional commitment to the community. While that doesn't guarantee that they stay, it should show that both are very open to staying long term and are setting their careers up as if they intend to stay.

Clearly that can all change quickly in the hockey community but I'd peg it as likely that Snerg is inked to a long term extension this summer.
Not necessarily
Every city needs dental care pretty much , but we can rule out Nashville

Agreed, otherwise we lose him on waivers for nothing imo.

I don't think his value is much higher than that right now, to be honest. He's had limited minutes and when he has he's often looked like a disaster in his own zone.

Agreed. But who knows, maybe with a real long term shot he performs and salvages some value. Not really holding my breath and expect he's not with the team next fall one way or another.

For the most part none of these talking head supposed insiders based in Toronto know anything about the goings on with the Jets. Notoriously tipped lipped Jets let out drips and drabs to 1 maybe two of them, the rest are throwing shit against the wall to see what sticks.
