Jets Upcoming Free Agents

The Blues at the TDL were outside the PO's so not surprised they were seeing what the value of their players were.

Yes, exactly.

Armstrong has been no stranger from either stepping in or stepping out of the TDL push. I think he just put a silly price on Schenn and if somebody bites, they bite, if not, they keep moving along business as usual.

And yet when asked about Connor Vilardi Samberg Lowry contracts he said the money part will take care of itself. So it sounds like they want to be with the Jets and Ehlers doesn’t.
This is a fair guess. Out of all of the top players that need to be re-signed over the next season I'd put Ehlers at the lowest likelihood.

Marty Biron on tsn just said how he thinks Chevy would offer 6x7m.. seems a bit off to me..

Edit: for Ehlers
Ya, I think Ehlers could get more if he goes to market. I'm sure some team will give him $8+M on a long-term deal. Though Chevy always seems to pull a rabbit out of his hat when it comes to the Jets FA, signing many of them to long term deals that seem to make fiscal sense. Maybe that happens again.

Some thought Nik would extend during the regular season, that has come and gone and he high tailed it to the World's. I think Nik has one foot out the door and unless Chevy was to severely over pay the second foot will join him on July 1st.

I thought Sandberg skirted around the issue of signing here but some of these guys are real good at playing their cards close to their vests.

Personally I'm not too sure about that, but let’s say that's true. What's the plan then, let Ehlers walk in free agency and hope you can grab one of these two guys? That's quite a gamble when you're likely looking at no Ehlers and neither of those options panning out.
I’m not suggesting we get those guys, just answering the other guys question - would we be better off with one of these guys. Both are likely an upgrade over Names at 2C

I want Nik here if the cost is reasonable.

His wife just opened a medical practice in the city. I’m guessing he is planning on staying.
Ladd’s wife did too and they chose to leave.

Not saying Samberg will leave. But we have at least one example where a wife owning a medical practice didn’t mean as much as we thought it would.

Ladd's wife didn't own a medical practice. She was an US-trained optometrist, who was having her family during those years and wasn't invested in her own business. She may or may not have practiced part-time-I can't recall if she got her Cdn licence.
Samberg's wife is a dentist, they have no kids yet and she just opened up a new dental office, which it appears she co-owns. That is a huge investment in time, money and community, so it's very likely they stay here for the longer term.
I can see Samberg signing deal of long duration, with trade protection in exchange for a more team-friendly AAV.
Win-win!

I agree. She pretty much made a significant professional commitment to the community. While that doesn't guarantee that they stay, it should show that both are very open to staying long term and are setting their careers up as if they intend to stay.

Clearly that can all change quickly in the hockey community but I'd peg it as likely that Snerg is inked to a long term extension this summer.

Don't really see a universe in Jets land where Samberg-Pionk aren't tied at the hip long term for this team.

I expect it all to get done this summer, as well. No reason to believe otherwise.

Goes with out saying, but any offer sheet the Jets are matching, too, of course, so that's not an issue either.

Ehlers is gone, IMO

I’d let Apples and Tanev go…and maybe Kupari as well if cap space is needed elsewhere

Sign Vilardi, Samberg, and Fleury

I wouldn’t have extended Iafallo at all, that cap would be better used elsewhere

2 players at very different points in their careers. And the Jets still have team control.

Yeah I’m guessing Sammy is a slam dunk to re-sign. Not sure if he is superstitious but I’ve called 8 X $6.75 = $54 M elsewhere.

I'd love Ehlers to stay but a few of the most connected local media (Wiebe and Murat) seem to feel he's more likely to head elsewhere. Still, the Jets seem likely to try to make an offer.

So, what was Chevy discussing with Ehlers' agent for a couple of hours?

My speculation...

Ehlers isn't closed to the Jets, but prefers to test the UFA market. But the Jets probably want an answer earlier than July 1st so that they can pivot to replace him, perhaps via trade around the draft on June 27. They also probably want to have an answer before free agency in case they want to try to shop with the extra cap space. Another consideration that might have been discussed is the potential for a sign-and-trade, or at least trading his negotiation rights like the Canes did with Guentzel (3rd round pick).

So, how might this play out? I think the Jets will probably put out their best offers (maybe a couple of options with different terms and AAV) and ask Ehlers to make a decision before a certain date. They can give him several weeks but will probably need a definitive answer by late June, before the Entry Draft. If Ehlers is clear that he won't sign or that he wants to test the market, I think the Jets might pivot and see if they can work out a sign-and-trade or maybe trade negotiating rights to recoup some value.

I think there's an outside possibility that Chevy will be content to let Ehlers shop around before circling back, because it would limit Chevy's ability to pivot to other alternatives on the trade or free agent market.
