Glad Stan had a good game. He is certainly capable of playing well once in a while but I think that is true of most 7-8 D men. The key always is how often do you play well vs not well, and who are you matched up against when it’s happening. The next level up for Stan is playing his better version way more often and being able to be trusted night in night out as a #6. We have been waiting 6 years for it and who knows maybe 2025 is year he finds that next level (not being sarcastic).

Arniel likes Stan. We are getting him one way or another. I think that has been made plain. I'm not good at acceptance but I can manage some hopefulness. I'm going to try and remain hopeful that, since we must have him, he manages to be his best self and play a safe defensive game. He has a good shot from the point. He makes some good passes. He blocks shots.

I wondered if we might see Perfetti in the middle but I think the coach is still apprehensive with that one.

It would make the 2C quandary less of an issue if there was another one in house.

Funny though we did see how Arniel plays his cards with a bottom 6 injury.
i am not sure Arniel will if he continues to be crap on the draws and little to no improvement on offense. if he is playing C, the Jets will need to find an additional scoring winger. Ehlers has been good this year, not as prolific as previous years at 5v5, however his 2 linemates have had large drop-offs in offense year-over-year.

The first one was funny because I'm pretty sure by Ehlers reaction he flubbed the cross crease pass to Scheif, and it just ended up on Vilardi's stick. Second one was nice, very nice.

He was talking on CJOB how a lot of his goals are back door tap ins and he tries not to celebrate them too much.

Thought it was interesting that his career high in any level is 63 games. Probably a big reason why the Kings gave up on him. Wonder if anything changed with strength and conditioning coming to the Jets organization.
Oh absolutely agree Ehlers was trying to pass to Schiefele and fanned on it right to Vilardi . Guess good things happen when you are in good position on the ice. Vilardi now has 17 goals, Iafallo has 5 and Kupari has 2 and Dubois has 5.......

Plus his lack of footspeed means that he's at risk of getting blown past by faster players, which always looks terrible

I remember people ragged hard on Nik Antropov for a lotnof the se reasons
You'd think with this footspeed, he'd be getting beat on every play by any skater with speed - but that isn't the case.

You need to go wide on him to beat him - being a lefty, his stick is covering the inside options and most guys on offense will take the outside route and hope to beat him on the way to the net. But that doesn't happen often - they usually end up in the corner or they've dished it off.
How often does he get beat towards the middle ice (inside)?

I can see why Arniel would not play Stan on his offside - he's loses that stick advantage while defending middle ice

I'm still just not seeing the chemistry with line 2 eye-test wise. They don't seem to play off each other all that well.

Wonder if they need to go with someone much cheaper to keep Ehlers.
I'd choose Alex over Apples if their contracts were similar...say 2 x 2.75m.
If Lambert and Chibs make the show next year, I'd sign Alex over Apples and waive Gus.

Names needs to be re-signed and I think Chevy re-signs Nik.

Volare and Sammy should be getting significant raises.

Not sure what Chevy does about Pionk but I wouldn't give him more than a 4 year deal...actually, I wouldn't re-sign him unless he REALLY changes my mind in the playoffs.

So nice he did it twice.:naughty:

Somehow I like that style of PP specialist better than the Ovi, Laine one timer. Not exactly sure why. Its like it takes better playmaking, moving the puck, to set it up and that guy contributes more to the rest of the PP than the guy who just parks in his office and waits for the puck. Next time he might be the guy who passes it to the slot for someone else to score, or he is screening the goalie, again for someone else to score.

Ehlers is one of the toughest guys to play with in the league. He is very unpredictable and is at his best as a one man show running all over the place. There is a reason Scheif and others haven’t wanted to play him in the past.

He has been great on the pp but 5 on 5 not as much.

so wonder if Heinola comes into next game or if they go back with Stan.

Interesting question. After a good game, it would be reasonable to decide that he has earned the next game. But if they are choosing the 3rd pair based on the opponent maybe they sit him against Avs.

Part of me hopes they go with Stan - AND he plays them a lot better than he did in the PO last year. That would be a real step up for him. OTOH, if he still can't handle them we will know that he is still the same old Stan. But I would hope he plays really well.

I hope whoever is in plays well. Avs are a tough team with 2 of the top 4 points guys. And that's not even including makar.

Ehlers usually a beast 5 on 5 though, including (and maybe especially) with Scheifele. I also always thought Namest and Ehlers had pretty good chemistry, just not seeing it this year between these three...

I wonder if Toni even plays or if they just brought him up for a paycheck while he sits in the pb with our extra d.

Toninato has always performed well when given the opportunity in the past. He is 'safe' to play and brings more offense than Gus (or Kupari). Not sure about PK. I can't recall whether he PKs or not.

I think they are doing fine as a line this season, they are not getting scored on and produce decent numbers offensively. Don't forget we probably have the best 3rd line in the league so that takes a little pressure off the second line.

ehlers still ranks pretty high in 5v5 scoring efficiency, but has experienced a drop-off from last season. it doesn't help when your main running mate on offense spends more time in slump than scoring.

edit: last season he did play with scheifele more up until this point of the season which boosts his numbers.

ehlers' pts/60 last year with each C:
namestnikov: 2 pts/60 (299 min)
scheifele: 2.9 pts/60 (409 min)
monahan: 3.5 pts/60 (258 min)

so he's producing at a better rate with namestnikov vs last year, the other 2 players have dropped off though.

Coghlan had one burst of speed last night that actually really impressed me. Loose puck in our end, Evangelista turns and tries to intercept and go for a breakaway but then Coghlan hustled his ass and beat him to it, made evangelista look like a snail. He's got some speed and good puck skills
It's funny you bring that up. My wife leaned over to me and asked who that was when it happened. I told her it was a guy looking to stay in the NHL and not spend anymore time than necessary on the Moose. That was an opportunity to demostrate what tools he has and he took it. Good on him!!!

On a side note, we went to a Moose game this year and came away depressed with the "talent" we witnessed, Coghlan included. Lesson is... don't be too quick to judge. Has me re-thininking what talent we have on the Moose because as a team they suck, but those pieces are obviously stewing and should not be judged until given an opportunity.

I've been very impressed with this Coghlan guy, and I would play him way before I'd play Tiny Heiny. All day long. Putting him on waivers again, I think he'll get claimed.

I don't remember the rule precisely but having passed through waivers, he does not need to be waived again until certain conditions are met. Something like 30 days back in the NHL or 10 games. I think that 30 days would be time in the NHL, but the clock may have started when he cleared, not sure.

He has only played 1 game since he cleared. Would that game have changed the mind of any GM? Maybe not but maybe some team now has a D injury that changes the picture. That would always be the risk with fringe players.

If we ever get healthy again there are going to be some tough decisions made.

They were a good crew, except for the bimbo, but I think the reason they were unbiased was because they didn't give a shit who won.

 And maybe that is the way the broadcast crew should always be when it is a national broadcast. The thing is that Prime is not pandering to the Toronto mass market.

I think almost every PP goes through Scheifele for zone entry. The skating is in zone rotation and angles mostly with Nik.

Funny I thought he had some bad turnovers and let pucks get by him on the boards. Not his strongest game, but criticizing the golden child instead of Stan is taboo.

Nope, definitely room to criticize more. Nik's passing was a little off a couple of times. The first one was clearly aimed to Scheif but it rolled off his stick and went to Vilardi. Kind of softly too. Lucky it wasn't picked off. He did have 2 A's last night though.

If the Jets could somehow acquire Josi, I think we'd have a true Cup contender. I understand he's very good friends with Neidereitter, and had dinner with him when Nashvilee was in town.

With Nashville struggling a lot this year, maybe Trotts would consider letting Josi go for some good young prospects ?? I'd give it a shot if I was Chevy.

Nice idea - but chances are not even as good as slim and none. Josi was drafted by Nashville. This is his 17th season since being drafted. Pretty sure he will retire a Predator, and not after having played somewhere else for a year or two.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Caught him from behind.

He has been great on the pp but 5 on 5 not as much.

And yet .... Ehlers made Scheif more productive.

Defenses can predict him even less, being less familiar. But I can see enjoying playing with Ehlers less. It would be more work and probably frustrating at times. He's like Buckley's Mixture - tastes awful, but it works.
