Prospect Info: Jets Prospects

Funny how trades work out, but if you go by the players actually selected by the trade of picks Chevy made out like a bandit. From picks 22 and 36 in 2016 the Flyers got Rubtsov and Laberge who have a combined total of 4 NHL games and 0 points. No way to know how things would have turned out if the trade didn't happen, but a bottom pairing D is better than 2 complete whiffs the Flyers ended up with.

True - but there were some very good players available at 22 and 36. I don't know if Chevy liked any of them but we had posters here who would have done much better than Stanley or the 2 that Philly got. We could have had both DeBrincat and Gerard. I don't remember who for certain but we had someone here proposing exactly that pair.

That is without even going crazy with hindsight. With that help, we could have had Tage Thompson and some other decent player, say Hronek.

Or we could have got just what Philly got.

Yeah Stanley isn't a bust. He's probably a bit of a dissapointment given where he was selected but he still largely covered the bet by becoming a bottom pairing guy.

That was not a deep draft class. Identifying the diamonds amongst the broken glass wasn't easy that year.

They weren't considered that good at the time, or else they wouldn't have been available

Looking back at draft classes is tough because it's almost impossible not to use hindsight. It's so easy to say "I totally would have picked (insert 4th round gem) at 36th if I was GM" but that player showed very little at the time

I think at the time there were a few around here that wanted DeBrincat. Obviously there was risk with his size but that ended up being a better pick. Of course I don’t think he would’ve signed here long-term anyway.

I didn’t mind drafting Stanley — he had some physical tools that were worth a bet and IIRC he had improved a ton in junior leading up to his draft — I’m more irritated with how he’s being deployed these days and the insane amount of rope he’s been given but I didn’t mind the pick.

I don’t mind taking players with good traits (like Stanley’s size) or tons of points (Petan, for example, even though he flamed out I still liked the pick) because once you’re out of the top 10-15 (depending on the draft) I think it becomes a bit of a shitshow.

Well said

I'll always like drafting for upside/ceiling, and that's what the org did with both Petan and Stanley

Jets were too disappointed with smaller players to have drafted DeBrincat at the time. Confirmation bias worked against them at that point. Petan scarred them I'd think. Gerard and Thompson are different. But that's the story of the draft. Hellebuyck should have gone first round, possibly first overall. Certainly top five. Hindsight and all that.

Koal though seems to have worked out.

What's the plan for He, Yager, and Barlow next season, Moose?

I assume they let Walton have another season in the OHL, and probably graduate one of Lambert and Chibrikov?

Both He and Walton are still junior eligible so both would be going back to the OHL next year. Which is the best for them as we wouldn't have enough development slots on the Moose anyhow with Yager, Barlow, Julien, and Levis graduating. That coupled with Zhilkin and Wagenr and likely one of Lambert/Chibrikov still on the team.

The NHL draft is always going to be unpredictable, since they draft 18 year old kids in different stages of physical development, who are far away from the finished product. A comparable would be if the NFL only drafted high school seniors who then went off to college to develop. There would be a whole shit lot of misses and a lot of late picks who become regulars and even stars.

Levis coming? Feels like Jets wont sign him
