Hiller seemed to switch gears after 2015 and started targeting more size with his high picks and that didn't go so well.

It seemed the org switched back to more of a skill/IQ based preference 2019 and onward but our picks have mostly been much lower in round 1. Heck even Cole at 10th overall is lower then three of our first 4 draft selections (7, 9, 9). Rutger was the next lowest at 14. Then the rest were all lat teems through mid to late 1st round.

Yep.

Hiller may well be (and likely is) a lesser head scout than MC, but he's had lower and fewer picks to work with also. The Jets have spent picks pretty freely since 2018, and their consistency in terms of making the POs has helped ensure that the picks they have held onto aren't high ones,

It's one of the reasons why I'd prefer not to lose another 1st this year. The Jets pool may have climbed a bit this year but once again it seems to be strength in depth rather than a group of very high-end prospects.

Maybe we see a packaging of prospects/ young players rather than picks this TDL. Heinola is almost certainly gone, and I wonder if the org places its chips on Chibby as a sort of skilled Apples replacement over Lambert, and then includes him in a trade package, maybe with a pending UFA like Al, who I suspect is replaceable from within the system already (though the org may not agree).

I agree that there's no 2015-style prospects pod waiting in the wings -- but still quite a bit of talent to follow and root for, IMO. Can't make myself get into the headspace to dismiss a prospect whilst he's still growing up and maybe ready to make the leap.

Wasn’t 2015 the year that Marcel Comeau left? Was he the secret sauce?
The Jets average 1st pick in the draft has been 25 in the past 8 drafts (2017-2024) vs. 9.5 in the first 6 (2011-2016).

The Jets also hit some big home runs in the first 6 drafts: Schefiele (7), Trouba (9), Morrissey (13), Ehlers (9), Connor (17), and Laine (2).

6 drafts, 6 hits, 3 in the Top 10, and all but Connor in the top half of the 1st round.

Plus, in the later rounds of their first 6 drafts, they picked up Lowry (67), Hellebuyck (130), Copp (104), Appleton (168).

6 drafts, 4 later round hits - but one is an elite goaltender.

In the 8 drafts since 2016, the Jets have only picked in the top half twice: Perfetti (10), and McGroarty (14).

8 drafts, 1.5 hits (I think McGroarty will have a legit NHL career but it's a bit early).

Samberg (43), Kovacevic (74) and Gustafsson (60) are the only players to develop from outside the top round so far - but Salomonsson (55) and Chibrikov (50) seem like good bets.

8 drafts, 5 hits (projected, so far). Samberg's the best (also so far).

Vesalainen's the only "confirmed" 1st round bust, but Lucius (18) and Heinola (20) are on thin ice.

I think Heinola is likely to be traded, but I'm not yet convinced he's going to be what would be considered a bust by the end of his career. To be honest I'm looking forward to chuckling at his future success in another organization coupled with the hand wringing over another Kovacevic-like gaffe by Jets management.

The rope seems pretty short for Dwarf European defensemen, as opposed to their opposite breed - the Domestic Giants... ;)

With Heinola, it feels like his ceiling is lowered a bit with every game he's stuck in the pressbox just so Stanley can muddle around out there night after night. Maybe he gets a fresh start as a throw-in on a deadline deal. Maybe not. The Jets have him tied up for one more season, and if he's not moved before then, I figure he'll try to catch on somewhere on a one year deal and if that doesn't pan out, it's back to the Liiga.

He's doing alright in the K, but I don't think he comes over. The Jets aren't going to have a spot for him and he's not gonna want to play for $70k in the AHL.

Ehlers, Iafallo, Namestnikov, Appleton are all pending FAs. There could be a lot of room.

The draft pundits seem to think this upcoming draft isn’t a very deep one in the 1st round, so I’m fine with moving this year’s 1st round pick in a deal that nets a key player with term or extended team control (not a rental).

But I would not move Yager or Salomonsson for any price. Lambert is near untouchable, but I would move him if the player coming back fills a more longer term need.

I think Yager and Salomonsson will be very good NHL players within the next 4 years and the Jets will like their affordable ELCs.

Yager really seems to by finding his stride with Lethbrdige. That shot of his is nasty.
His release is definitely pro-ready

It's funny... when he was 12, 13, 14 years old, people in western Canada talked about him and Bedard in the same breath.

Now you watch Bedard, and he still hasn't figured out how to play the two way pro game. This week a few pundits ripped into him for it. Soft play, poor body language, etc

Now - I'm 100% NOT saying that Yager will be better in the NHL, but I'll say that based on watching him in junior a bit and when he was here, he already gets the defensive positioning part of being a pro centre. He'll probably only spend enough time on the Moose for his frame to fill out

Agreed, I also think he's exactly the type of player management wants for the 2C. I really liked the one period him and Cole played in preseason together. I think the two of them will form a real nice all around line at some point in the future.

Perfetti-Yager-Lambert has a lot of potential.
