He was late first round so I didn’t quite put him in that category. Like Barlow he was physically mature when we drafted him but he was late 1st round. He was certainly a big disappointment too.

Seems like with the Jets there have been three tiers. Picks 10 and under we have been money in the bank, 11-20 we have been hit and miss, 20-32 more miss than hit.

I’m guessing this is true for most organizations based on the odds of a drafted player becoming an NHL regular by draft position.

Yea I think it is probably really normal.

The one odd outlier for me is Dallas. I remember when we came back into the league and they changed ownership it seemed like for the first 5 or 6 season I loved how we drafted and didn’t really get what they were up to. Funny how things really turned around in Dallas with their scouting and all of a sudden they have rebuilt that team largely through the draft on the fly. (With a bit of lottery luck one year).

That's pretty much expected...things fall off steeply through the first round and by the time you're into the 3rd round chances of a pick panning out are really low.

Vesalainen had the best D+1 years of any Jets prospect in terms of NHLe, which raised some high hopes. He was putting up nearly a point per game in the Liiga as an 18 year old and had 6 points in 5 games at the World Juniors.

His D+2 was strong as well, putting up decent points in the AHL and getting a look with the Jets. But there were signs of trouble with the relationship when the Jets sent him back to Finland (where he did well again in the KHL with Jokerit).

Sutter had an okay draft year in terms of points, and then just went in the tank. At least the Jets seemed to figure out pretty quickly they weren't getting what they thought they were in him and cut bait.

Kristian Vesalainen?

KV was fine in D+1 and D+2, improving each year. Even in D+3 he had 30 pts in 60 AHL games as a 20 YO rookie, which is not bad. He just never brought any offence to the NHL.

And if I remember right he almost never touched the puck.
He had a great shot, but if you never touch the puck, it’s pretty much useless.

I remember him wanting to stay in Finland after the draft. It stifled his development and never got accustomed to the NA game.

He only stayed in Finland 1 year after the draft. Plenty of Euro players stay there for a year or two, some longer, without apparently hurting their development. In his first 88 AHL games, over 3 seasons, he scored 48 pts. Not great, but not bad. His last session in the A was 17 gms, 6 pts. Small sample but in line with what his NHL play had become.

I think it is more likely that Jets tried to change him. I'm not sure what the plan was but it clearly didn't work.

Back in Finland he has done quite well. He is up to a ppg pace this season. So he must have some ability.

This week I spent two days at a tradeshow and apparently just standing around makes the legs ache like crazy now.

A point per game in the Liiga is about 0.44 points per game in NHLe. Perfetti's a streaky 0.54 p/gp right now and is getting criticized here for being borderline in the Top 6.

He was a big kid. Jets probably saw him as a future bottom 6 with a bit of scoring touch, and maybe he just didn't want to grind away his career.
