Plenty of guys who don't deserve an NHL game get NHL games. Plenty on this team. Plenty of older shitty players get games because they're "known". Christ EBUG's don't deserve a pro game but get thrown in for "lol fun story" to the detriment of the guys in the AHL who bust their ass but calling them up doesn't get fun attention.

The Jets had the last game of the season to reward even just some the troops busting their ass in the AHL by throwing some of them a bone, whether it's a reward or something to work to. Toss a few guys in to acknowledge you're aware they exist outside of contract negotiations.

They decided to play 4 starters on defense, a guy who requested a trade out of the city, and a PB NHL/AHL tweener who jumped the line over guys busting their ass on the Moose because they **liked** his game. Much like how useless waiver claim scrub Karson Kuhlman became a fixture when it was clear he wasn't useful, but somehow leapfrogged everyone else on the Moose while he did absolutely nothing. Or Big Sak who did nothing all year but offset his positive PK contribution by being awful everywhere else.

Winnipeg can't afford to treat it's prospects like cattle. Hard enough to sign them as is.
The team also couldn’t afford to treat the last game of the season like a throw away game. They should have gone with their starting playoff lineup and try to win out. A team that barely squeaks into the playoffs and they take their foot off the gas. We seen what happened from there.

The conversation is not about a pity game. It is about a reward game, a recognition game, an encouragement game.
So he was entitled to a game because he was a good soldier? So how many other minor league players are also entitled to their chance to play in the NHL because they might leave? So we now want everyone in the organization to be entitled a reward yet we wonder why the big club is unaccountable and entitled. The rot in this organization is so deep even fans buy into it.

I didn't say "good soldier". That was someone else. This is not about entitlement, being 'given' something for free or any of that other BS. Guy played well enough to have earned a reward. Period. You are free to disagree with that. Don't bother trying to turn it into something else.

This conversation is going around the same bush for the 4th or 5th time. Can we please stop?

last thing I will say on the gawanke subject, did anyone stop to think that maybe the org told him if he wants to get a shot in the nhl he needs to work on his defensive game?

He was like the 11-12 depth defenceman so why does he get a game he didn’t earn ?

So buy him a car, buy him a ham dinner, lots of rewards to give other than playing time in nhl when he is low on depth chart. Chisholm deserved a few games or a game as a reward because he is on the cusp.

I don't think the Jets have lost anything in Gawanke. The only part involved having lost something is Gawanke a future in the NHL.

Sure, although rather slim, he had chances of making it. But in order to do so, he needed to make a big, big step forward in his defensive game and in order to be able to do that first thing you need to show up with is the mindset to stay patient, listen to your NHL club and work on yourself. Scoring 20 goals in the AHL is great and everything but it might have been the trigger that killed his chances of making it because apparently it sparked a "BUT I SCORED 20 GOALS I DESERVE IT AND I WANT IT NOW!"-kind of reaction.

*edit*

after watching 3 Germany games at the World Cup I kind of also start to wonder how he scored 20 goals in the AHL because it doesn't feel like he's a threat to score when winding it up to me. At least not more like other players on the ice. Were his 20 goals a byproduct of Heinola and Chisholm at the end of the day? I'm not saying he is, honestly asking the question to myself after seeing him in 3 games (or more like 2,5, I stopped watching vs Hungary after they went up 4-0).

I recall PM saying that he has never met a young player that didn’t think he should be playing in the NHL. It seems that he was correct. Sadly for most they never sniff the show. Just how it is.

Interesting that Lambert is living with his dad in Seattle

It had been said that he needed to get away from him, but he's been playing his best hockey
I think he needed to get away from playing against men as a teenager. Confidence is everything for growth. He lost it in Finland and he struggled initially in the AHL as everyone should have expected.

I still think Lambert has potential to make an impact on a strong contender one day. I just think that is likely as a strong 3rd liner that uses his speed to forecheck, PK and has enough finish to make teams pay.

I think if he stays at center, a guy like Dave Bolland is a great example of how a player with his skillset can make an impact on a contender. As oppose to a guy like Barzal which I think is a bit unfair to Brad.

Hagelin and Grabner are two other guys who were more pure wingers that adapted their game to be impact bottom six guys who could play complimentary top six if needed.

Developing some more grit and sandpaper is going to be what can get Lambert to that next level as a pro.

Based on that article, I think it's just as important for him to be playing WITH guys his own age

It's hard to put ourselves in his position being a 16 or 17 year-old kid playing with grown men. Off the ice it's impossible to gel with his teammates. Very little in common

Coming to the rink was probably a much more fun experience. Get to enjoy the social aspect in the locker room as well as just playing the game

Rudy…..Rudy…… Rudy…. Rudy……!!!!

(Gawanke)

He’s too small to play in NHL…..

He tried really hard in practise…..

Had to overcome so much…..

Defensive liability…..

This is not Disney…….” No Soup for you”!!

If he would have extended again for another year with the Jets ….. we would have cut him In Training camp Again and he would have gone unclaimed again thru waivers….! Again

Damn, was really hoping that Morrissey, who is shorter and lighter than Gawanke, had a chance. Too small though.

Too be fair this org has almost always prioritized the bigger/grittier dmen.

Chariot over Postma
Poolman over Niku
Stanley/Samberg over Heinola

Of the dmen we have graduated to NHL careers all but Morrissey are big defensive dmen. Heck even JoMo made it originally due to his defense.

Seems to me this org may have a blind spot to a certain type of dmen and aren't great at integrating younger/more offensive minded ones.

Completely changed his game and offseason to get that look and it ended up being a detriment in the long run. I remember him saying he added a whole bunch of weight one year and then had to drop it all to get his quickness back. He also had Buff outright request to play with him apparently.

That was two years before he bulked up. But yeah he had to change his game to get that look. Didn't hurt that Buff wanted to play with him. As we've seen top players tend to get what they want.

I wonder if he'd have ever gotten a real shot if he hadn't changed his game. His game in junior was basically what we saw last year with the occasional monster hit.
We've had our (former) captain refer to prospects with derision and a coach that constantly pointed to the youth on the roster as the excuse for why they weren't competitive.

I think there's something to be said about Morrissey's talent and ability that he was able to find that offense after basically removing all the risk from his game. I doubt many prospects or even established players could do the same. I also don't think it's reasonable to expect prospects to completely change their game to get their opportunity, most players aren't Morrissey.

12 prospects to watch, nice profile on Big Bad.
