What's your excuse?
I come in peace. On my quest to hit all 30 arenas I'm going to MTS Centre come December 8 to watch my NYR vs the Jets. What should I see around and/or in the arena? Any statues, or trophy/banner walls outside or in the concourse? Any good food options inside the arena or should I pass, and just have dinner before going to the arena? Any good food recommendation around town as well? MTS Centre will be arena #29 out of 30. Thanks.

Are you just hitting the game? or are you staying for a day or two?

Well there's the Timothy Eaton statue on the 2nd floor of the arena - rub his toe for good luck...and a bit of stuff inside the arena on the 100-level concourse.

Food nearby - across Portage Avenue from the MTSC is the Merchant Kitchen in the Alt Hotel - Latin/Asian, and it's quite good. Moxie's in the MTSC is okay...it's a chain with some aspirations, so the food's half decent.

Food elsewhere in town - what are you after? 529 Wellington is the high-end steakhouse. VJ's on Main is a good place for fatboys/burgers/fries. Resto Gare on Des Meurons in St. Boniface for French/Canadian/Manitoban fare. Fergies Fish and Chips is at the Forks. Stella's on Sherbrook (or Grant, or Osborne? there are a few around) for brunch. Pizzeria Gusto on Academy. Kum Koon Garden on King for Dim Sum. I'm ashamed to admit I don't know where to get good Ukrainian food now that Alycia's moved out of town...

Cultural stuff - the Art Gallery is about 8 blocks west of the MTSC. The Exchange District starts 2 or 3 blocks northeast of MTSC. Dress for winter if you're going to stroll around there. The Zoo's Journey to Churchill exhibit is pretty cool (NO PUN INTENDED ;)) but it's not near downtown.

Thank you for the great information. Food wise, I'm pretty open. I do like to check out foods which are particular to that area. Not sure what Winnipeg is famous for. For example if you came to NYC, I'd recommend you get some NY Pizza, or a NY Cheesecake. I'll look up those restaurants you've listed and see how far they are from my hotel and then decide which ones to check out.

I'll be in WPG for about 36 hours and I'll allocate about 4 hours to the game (walking around the concourses, taking photos, checking out the team store to buy my official game puck, and catching warmups). So I'll have Wednesday evening, and Thursday until the game to check out Winnipeg.

Another couple of quick questions. What time do doors open at MTS Centre? I got a seat in the 200's. Do they allow people to go down to the glass to watch warmups? Thanks.

Generally it's only an hour before puck drop but I've been told that people have been in as much as 90 minutes early. I'll let others confirm that though before you waste your time.

Absolutely let people go down to the glass. Fill yer boots.

Team store opens at 10:00 A.M. weekdays so you can get that one out of the way earlier.

What hotel are you staying at? We might be able to give more precise info based on that (sorry if I missed it).

Decided to stay across the street at the Alt Hotel. Going to take the 15 Bus from the airport to the MTS Centre on Wednesday.

Pregame many options. I'd reccomend the Shark Club.

Try a Jet Dog at the arena. Get it with Perrogies.

Maybe you'd enjoy a visit here?

I've been nerding it up lately:

- Windows 10 on the laptop with W7 and WXP pro on virtual machines so I can run older software seamlessly
- upgraded to shaw 150
- set up a wifi network on a different IP address. No crossover to my house LAN
- Setting up OpenVPN so I can tap into my network from anywhere
- Going to buy a NAS (network attached storage) with two drives in raid 0 and automatic cloud backup

It's for my massive collection of pictures of Romang67's mom.

I'm buying a new laptop on Black Friday or Cyber Monday. No idea what kind, but my current one is getting a bit stale.

At 20GB of memory without anything installed, a cracked screen, and problems running flash games, I had a pretty easy time convincing myself that it was time for an upgrade.

Get a SSD hard drive. You will not regret it for a second. Do it. Also I stay away from the larger screens as they're more likely to break the hinges. Some people love touchscreens I think they're the work of the devil.

My current one has a touch screen, and I actually find it fairly nifty.

Or well, it has half a touch screen now, and I stopped using it because apparently most of the things I want to click on are on the right side of the screen.

I plan to get a pretty decent laptop, and am almost certainly getting a SSD. In general, I just want a decent computer again, instead of my current thing. It has done everything that can be expected over 2 years for $250, but no one in their right mind can say that ever was a good computer.

Regardless as to your need for storing Romang67's mom pics on it, you should look at Synology for a NAS. https://www.synology.com/en-us/

I have the DS416play and it's the cats' ass. Has the same functionality as our $300,000 SAN we have at my work. The neatest thing about them is they have their own RAID called SHR ( also supports raid 0,1,5, etc. ) which allows you to mix drive sizes and get more space and grow space without having to replace all the drives at the same time. They have a raid calculator tool on their website to show you how it works.

Hmm, I can't say there's any food item we'd be notable for. Maybe pickerel or goldeye.

Merchant Kitchen is decent and right there. But if you walk a half-dozen blocks northeast into the Exchange District, your options open up.

Deer + Almond and Peasant Cookery (both a bit more upscale, think fusion/French cuisine) are great.

For more casual fare, try King + Bannatyne (big ass sandwiches), King's Head (English pub grub + Indian fare), Smokes Poutinerie (Poutine...get your drunk food here!), and Clementine (best brunch in the area IMHO).

Fatboys...

Urban Dictionary defines the Fatboy as:

"A large hamburger generally found in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It consists of a hamburger patty, chili, quartered dill pickle, onions, mustard and a lot of mayonnaise. Usually the burger is too tall to fit in your mouth so you eat it by squeezing or using a fork, or both."

A foodie friend of mine mentioned going to Blondie's. It was on some Food Network/Travel Channel show. Worth the bus/cab ride there?

A bit too far away from where you are at and I think it's a bit overrated. It's alright but as the folks here say the Fatboys at VJ's are really unique to Winnipeg and not too far from the Alt (well maybe 6 or 7 blocks so a bit of a hike). Merchant Kitchen in the base of your hotel is good. You might want to see the human rights museum while you are here. Pack a warm coat.

Synology is what I'm looking at. I like the hotswappable feature, but don't need 4k media streaming. Encryption is nice too.

My friend has 40 TB worth of NAS for storing many pictures of Romang67s mom.
