I’m happy with the win and I’ll take the two points, but folks, we’ve got some real problems in our own zone. The personnel changes every year but the game play does not. Hellebuyck on many nights simply bails us out. Put Comrie in net last night and we lose by 4 goals.

We’re going to get clobbered when we face top 10 teams in the league unless someone fixes the way this team defends.

Mistakes happen, goals against happen, Good players get thier pockets picked, bad players make great plas.....It's hockey

I see positives.

Road game, California trip, off ice issues, Key players out, and the Jets found a way to win despite the challenges and mistakes....those are good things.

The wife was barked out of bed, and I had to take her out for a third late night walk, since I was still up for the Jets game.

As I walked Penny out, Ana went up by 1 with 4 minutes left.

I wasn't MAD, per se. I mean, I didn't BLAME anyone.

Not going to lie, there was a couple stinkeyes, but no blame.

And of course Penny was f***ing obstinate. I had to do the old "Family Guy 'James Woods, OO piece of candy!'" trick to even get her halfway down the block, until she was adamant it was time to go home. And when a f***ing purebred Golden Retriever is doing her Cujo impression, you KNOW she just wants to go home.

And so I led her home, back into her kennel, the wife cursed the day I was born, and I sat back down in my den as I could already hear both those bitches snoring away.

And then we scored! Yeah great.. oh wait FOUR THREE WE ARE AHEAD.

Okay that's rad.

Did your dog have road rash?

Lol wow, what a finish! Dubois better buy all those guys some food and drinks now!
You know, despite those ghastly giveaways PLD still continued his fine play that has continued in every game this short season. He has earned a couple of mulligans (which is easy to say since we won). In fact, Ehlers owed his team his hero act for not contributing enough in earlier games. So everything is "Even-Steven". :)

...oh, and Hellebuyck is back baby. Great game especially because of the sloppiness in front of him.

That 2nd period was awful and the 3rd wasn't much better. I will say the schedule maker has not be kind to us. Fly to Cali to start the year come home for 2 and then fly back to Cali again. It will be nice once Scheif/Wheeler get back just to improve our depth and get some consistency on all the lines

Helly seems to be back in fine form again. Those giveaways where all bad and the ducks converted on them. Our Transition offense got stuck in place by the Ducks who played some fantastic neutral zone play. I hesistate to call it a trap but it is but they move quickly to offense when the puck does get turned over in the neutral zone. The ice in Anaheim is terrible. The puck was bouncing around on both teams and never seemed to lie flat.

Thought the Jets were going high shortside on Gibson all night and finally Ehlers roofed it. Of course I missed it because I was going to bed but thankfully my dog went bananas and I came out to check on him and looked at my phone to see they tied it. I then turned the TV on to a replay of 4th goal!

was in-and-out of the game (recovering from surgery right now) so going through the summary, and based on the parts i saw....

i dont expect the Jets to put on a Picasso of a game every night. to many issues with team-defense and personnel imo.

but against the ducks i think you'd expect a better defensive showing at least? maybe im not giving Anaheim enough credit, but seriously, i don't think i'd take any of their Cs (CURRENTLY) over PLD or Stastny, perhaps even Lowry for that matter (not saying long-term, bc i expect Zegras to be a V good player, but talking right now)... & wouldn't take any of their Wingers over Ehlers, Connor, maybe Copp even. i think they have one player that'd id take over some1 in our top-6 (svech) lol.

but anyway, it's a W. Stastny/copp/ehlers picking up right where they left off last year. i hope this ehlers+copp stays together. don't care who is the 3rd on that line.

still undefeated w/o Scheifele+Wheeler :naughty:

I understand people don't like the system but what I continually see in our zone is poor clearing attempts and bad decisions. That is not systems.

The players need to start executing better, plain and simple.

Yes, I'm sure there is a better schema for reducing time spent in our zone but even in the last minute we had two awful clearing attempts that luckily ended up on a Jets stick or we could have been going into OT. The one that drives me crazy is a forward has possession in our zone inside our blue line abs they make a cute little dish to the inside of the ice that gets picked off. If your up with less than 5 minutes left that needs to be chipped out.

It would suck to have your annual California trips take place when the weather here is still pretty nice. Schedule those trips for January!

Yeah Jets win ugly. I'll take it though. There was a lot of fist pumping and shouting waking up the early-to-bed family last night...

Stole that one -

Lots of slop in our end - we are still having trouble making that first pass and we tend to panic when things get rushed.

Nice to see Ehlers get on the board in a timely manner.

Take the win and run -

Poor clearing attempts are just that, I don't think those particular events are being blamed on system play. Blaming the system isn't an absoulute. Viewing the Jets as a whole, I think their positioning leaves a lot to be desired in the D zone and their options in transition are limited once they regain possession. Bad decisions are part of it but so are the decisions available to them pretty consistently. When we're going on 3-4 years of seeing this style of play, I don't think most of it is simply bad decisions.

Wow! What a last minute game of redemption powered by our Dutch Protector who receives 100 Toques of Honour for both the Twoque-Trick (great idea @B33R LEAGUE I hope it catches on) and the way it came to be (see merit summary below).

Interesting facts:

Ehlers second last shift started with 2:37 left in the game. 1:12 into into his shift there was an icing call against Anaheim with 1:25 left, 5 seconds after the draw Ehlers fires one of the most accurate shots I have seen to tie the game.

What is truly fascinating is the fact Ehlers scored the game winning goal 19 seconds later AFTER the Lowry line had a 15 second shift. Maurice (give him credit here for going with the hot hand even without the benefit of a timeout [interesting information here, between the tying goal being scored and the Lowry shift ending, Ehlers was on the bench for 57 seconds in actual elapsed time]).

Lowry line came on after the goal with 1:20 remaining, Anaheim iced the puck again with 1:05 remaining and the Copp line came back out. This time Ehlers was more efficient winning the game 4 seconds later. He remained on the ice for the rest of the game (no timeouts).

100 Toques of Honour merit summary:

Ehlers played 2:22 of the final 2:37 of the game.
Ehlers scored 2 goals in 19 seconds to bring his season counting stats to 2 goals 2 assists to help us to our 2nd win against Anaheim.

The Jets' biggest problem continues to be turnovers in their zone, often when they are looking for zone exits. Some of it is just bad / soft plays (like the turnovers by Dubois), and some of it is just trying to fly into transition too quickly (something Connor / Scheifele have struggled with). But there is also just hesitation and trying to decide what to do, which I think comes from having a much too spread out structure and then D searching for the passing lane. On the Ducks' first goal, DeMelo made a bad D-to-D pass to Schmidt that Schmidt had to retrieve on the boards, but then Schmidt was too slow in moving the puck, so he got stripped and it was in the back of the net.

I think the mistakes (like Dubois') can be cleaned up fairly easily. But the Jets also need to develop a more compact structure, and then spend some time together as a team so that they aren't constantly thinking about the next pass. That has been exacerbated by having to mix up positions and lines at forward.

A positive aspect is that the Jets are finding some offense in the absence of Scheifele, which they really haven't had in previous years. A lot of that is by putting Connor and Dubois together to create a fast and dangerous line. Ehlers will always generate offense. Maurice likes to keep successful lines together (particularly from an offensive perspective), so I would bet he keeps Connor with Dubois, and moves Scheifele into a slot alongside Ehlers. Copp has firmly grabbed a top-6 forward role at this point. For all of the angst about his skill level, he's putting together another really strong season offensively. I have been pleasantly surprised by Stastny's strong play so far this season. I expected more of a drop-off in his play due to age and a lack-lustre pre-season. But he's been really strong in Scheifele's absence.

The D is still working out the kinks. I think Pionk and Dillon had a really rough start, but have been better in the past few games. A few of their chances against have been caused by bad forward play. Morrissey is having a strong bounce-back season. Schmidt brings really strong puck-moving, but he has had some problems with the details in his game, mainly inaccurate passes. I think that will likely stabilize.

The more toques that litter the ice, the merrier it is in Jetsville ;) still think it'd be a cool idea. Detroit has Octupai, Florida has rats, Jets fans should start the twoques.

I'm sure it would be a win win and TNSE would end up donating the toques to salvation army for less fortunate in need of toques during -50 weather (rather than hats).

Love the post Luc.

Sloppy game but a couple positive notes is KFC pld svech line needs to stay together for now, Ehlers might be unleashed now, and pk went 3 for 3 and Helly looking good.

Look for little things in bad games
