I try to call it like I see it, and use summary data to better understand trends. I noted earlier this season that I thought it was reasonable to see how CSV worked this season for the first 15-20 games and if they went back to some of their earlier habits and results that Arniel would likely need to change the line combinations. But I think it's pretty evident that CSV have been much more proficient at zone exits and transition, and have avoided the kinds of turnovers that led them to trouble in the past. As a result, they are spending less time defending in their own zone and are getting more offensive opportunities. In summary, they are playing better, and it's evident from watching them and in their metrics.
Yet CSV is hardly dominating their 5v5 matchups in terms of GF% and xGF%, despite all of what you're saying being true (although you're correct in saying that they are improved
Well, looking at past Cup winners and contenders, the teams that get there often have pretty dominant top lines. Barkov-Reinhart for Florida. McDavid-whoever for Edmonton. Vegas had Eichel-Marchessault. Avs had MacK-Rantanen. TBL had Stamkos-Kucherov. Tarasenko-O'Reilly for the Blues. Bergereon-Marchand for Boston. Backstrom-Ovechkin for Washington. Marchessault-Karlsson in Vegas first season.

There are a handful of teams that won a conference final where I can't think of their dominant top line. (so-youre-telling-me-theres-a-chance.gif) But I don't think any of those won the Cup (2016-17 Preds? 2020-21 Habs? 2011-12 Devils? And they probably did have dominant 1st lines, I just can't remember them like Toews' lines in Chicago or Crosby's in Pittsburgh or Kopitar's in LA).
Of all your examples, I think that Tarasenko - O'Reilly are the closest comparable to Schief - Connor that I see, with the * being that O'Reilly was an amazing 2 way centre that Schief can't quite compare too. That said, they'd isn't have a F who was over a point per game that season

That team also had Bennington go on a once-in-a-lifetime tear that 2nd half/playoffs and a solid d corps including peiterangelo, parayko (before he fell off) and Bowmeester

Our team this year, on paper, is much more talented AND deep than that team, which should give us hope that it can win as it's constructed despite the fact that we don't have that dominating top line that other cup winners have had

This is 100% correct imo.
According to most "experts" they say the Jets have the best 3rd line in the NHL and yet yesterday they had a bad game but the other 3 lines came through.
While CVS did the majority of the scoring the 4th line BKI which nobody is talking about impressed me the most ... they keep this up the Jets will have the best 3rd and 4th line in the NHL along with the best goalie.

The only 3rd line performing at a better clip than ALN is the Rangers 3rd line of Cuylle-Chytil-Kakko who haven't been scored on yet at 5v5 and have scored 11 goals. The ALN line has only been scored on twice at 5v5 so far and has 10 goals for.

The major difference between the Rangers 3rd line and ours is the Rangers 3rd line gets significantly easier matchups. ALN is basically a shutdown 3rd line while the Rangers 3rd line is more of a sheltered scoring line. Still both lines are succeeding heavily in their roles.

Let sleeping dogs lie.

KC has always had finisher potential. But his defensive game needed work...last year he was pacing 50 goals before he got injured. I would love to see him hit that mark.

Last year's analytics are only a reference. Different coach, new season.

It's not inconceivable that KC and Scheif could slump over the course of the season...that's happened before. We'll see how Arniel deals with it.

Right now it's working, and Ehlers is going too, let's enjoy this for a moment.
NEVER!!!!

Edit: I actually would be happy to, but I know goddamn well that the second we lose a game or two where the top line loses its matchups, the same posters will be in the PGTs saying "I TOLD YOU SO!!! YOU CAN'T WIN WITH A TOP LINE LIKE THAT!!!!"

It was already happening while we were winning earlier in the year

For me it’s all good. I am not sure how the playoffs will go it’s so far away anything could happen between now and then. Mostly I just want to enjoy the 6 months of hockey and the ups and downs of the 82 games.
Completely agree! I'm overwhelmed by how we've started the season but mostly I just want to enjoy the ups and downs of the rest of the year. Whatever happens between now and the end of the season, I just want to enjoy watching us play.

Imagine those poor fans in Chicago and San Jose looking forward to the rest of ...... what?

The Jets have uncommon forward depth. They are all playing the system very effectively, especially on the forecheck, backtracking and D zone. But each of the lines attacks on offense differently, and I think that keeps opposing defenses off balance.

Man, it's funny. Fans of team that has a top line that dominates are always clamoring for depth, and here we are with the best depth in the league and people are clamoring for a top line that dominates. In the cap era, it's almost impossible to have both

For some reason it reminds me of women and their hair. Women with long, beautiful straight hair always spend time curling it and women with beautifully curtly hair will spend hours straightening it. Or guys fishing... a guy fishing from shore will try to cast their line out as far as possible while the guy on the boat wants to get to as close to shore as he can
I'd speculate on what that reason is, but it's probably better not to.

(And yes, I'm ending on a preposition.)

It's possible but we still have Gus, Fleury, Stanley, Ville in the PB with some young guys chomping at the bit to maybe get a call up.

I think we have solid enough depth that we can move some guys up the lineup and be alright, provided we don't suffer a bunch of injuries but if that happens we probably shouldn't get to trigger happy.
Ya I'm not saying they should trade their first round pick or anything.
I'd love it if all our answers came from within.
I don't pay enough attention to the Moose to know how ready (or not) guys are.
I'd love Heinola to find a place on the team, click with Miller and bring another dimension to our 3rd pair. And of course I would love for Lambert or someone to break through.

It would be wild if we were in some killer spot at the deadline to see the Jets stand pat.
Seems like there is a lot of pressure on GM's to keep up with the Jones's.

Great game to watch although I may have annoyed the folks in the apartments next to mine.

Two gripes, however:

Why do we always draw a penalty when we're leading with between 8 to 5 minutes left in the game?

Why does the other team interfere with our goalie with impunity?

Not that I expect the League to answer for the biased officiating but I'd like to think that Chevy or Chipman might want to embarrass the brass a little.
Actual answer: There is no bias, but fans of team XYZ will swear up and down that Bettman and the NHL are out to get them.

If we end up in a really good spot come deadline time and the team is looking relatively healthy I could see Chevy trying to add a few depth pieces for PB duty just in case but I don't think it will be anyone marquee. Guys we really only have to give up middling to late picks for from teams in the basement just as some insurance.

Well said. The 3rd and 4th line attack below the goal line a lot. Grind out their shifts, work low to high when available.

The top line lets KC free range alot to get different looks...most of the pucks cycle through KC and Scheif with d-men as buffer. I think Bogo brought up that they are generally more effective with 44-2 than 54-4 and that may be a part of what works.

2nd scoring line seems to always play the puck to soft areas to get speed behind their points of attack. They would probably track as the line that has the puck on their sticks for the least amount of time, but they move the puck likely faster than everyone else.

I’m with you. Not even thinking of post season, just enjoying watching the best version of the jets that I’ve ever seen. It’s definitely about the journey this year.

It would be funny if all our LHD ended up healthy at the deadline and Chevy actually trades one for picks lol

Come out of the TDL "pick positive" while sitting near the top of the league

Yeah I think this team really just needed a season like this. Obviously I'd love for the Jets to win a Cup. But it feels good to be accomplishing this is a team. No distractions, no issues, no chatter behind the scenes. Just focused on winning each game in the moment and when it's done, onto the next. If we lose so be it, if we win so be it.

I've seen (and even read some) articles which do a simple analysis of when penalties are called and what the score was at the time of the penalty.

The bias is real. The majority of penalties are called against the team which is leading at the time. It becomes even more pronounced in the third period. And if you're leading by one goal in the last 10 minutes of a game, your odds of getting a penalty are greatly increased.

Or perhaps your "no bias" answer refers to a fan-centric response. In that respect, you're right. The refs call "management penalties" against ALL leading teams, and not just the one your cheering for.

I agree, they absolutely make situational calls.

My post clearly mentioned being from a fans perspective. The NHL/Bettman aren't cheering for/against the Jets.

There’s a saying ….” In order to win you have to first learn how to lose.”
I think the Jets have learned that lesson last year losing to the Avs.
The Jets imo have played two games this year that were not up to their standards and they came out flying the following game.
This team is on a mission and we are lucky to witness it this year. If there are no major injuries … look out.

I think when you're on the boat, you're trying to get the fish near the shore and structure to come follow back towards the boat. But when you're on the dock, you need to cast out so you can have them follow back towards the dock.

Wait, you're talking about the fishing right?

We'll get a bottom pairing/press box D-man for injury insurance at least for sure - That's a patented Chevy move (Joe Morrow, my beloved)

I wouldn't hate getting started on that work now, and aiming for a starter-quality Names-style player/move instead of a 7/8 guy.

It's clear we'll be in the mix even if we fall back to earth, so why not up the timeline instead of waiting until the deadline?

I have said forever if the Jets made the playoffs in 17/18, even if it's just a first-round exit, they win the cup in 18/19.

Cap space and opportunity. Not too many players available this early. I could see Malkin, Rakell and Letang changing jerseys mid season though, as KD rolls up the tank first. Montreal has some tank vibes going to, as they are stuck in a rebuild that isn't building anything but prospects.

Right now the Jets are alternating injuries for roster space. I don't know what Dylan Coghlan is doing to stay in the lineup, I'm guessing he's a well liked player, maybe someone who skated with Josh this offseason and got a job.

Gustafsson has been in the role of #13 before. He's obviously very professional about it.

Heinola we'll have to see where or how he gets in the lineup.

Top need to me would be a defenseman that allowed the Jets to play 3 pairings strong consistently. Buffer some minutes.

Then it's depth and depth is often an injury related issue, so let's stay healthy for as long as possible.
