Thursday night the Preds played Edmonton and alot of their fans came out after their game and they saw the Dude in his Jets shirt and they were walking up and saying man the Jets are good this year. I agreed with them. :naughty:

Welcome back, how did the Dude enjoy Nashville?

I think through the first 11 games it’s interesting that Connor seems like a different player. It’s not just his D that’s often mentioned, but, I think it’s less deference to schief. I think he drives the 1st line as well as the pp. It seems like the pp is created so he can quarterback it. He is the first shooting option, when that’s not there he has Morissey up top to reset or Ehlers in the corner. They also usually get him to bring the puck in when entering zone or to make the decision to pass it off.

I think that’s the big difference in the pp. I mean having Ehlers there is great, but, they don’t use him as much as they could. You’d think he would be the guy with puck entering the zone. I also think the pp could be better by using Ehlers more so kc can focus on just reappearing in places to snipe. Which may happen more in time as Ehlers is on 1st unit more.

Yes! This group is underrated.

Not Stanley bashing but he was the weak link last night, I really hope Fleury draws in for a couple games to keep him in it. Kupari earned another start with a very strong performance last night.

I really can't complain about a single player from last night - this team is executing magnificently.

Special mention to:

Connor: just a magnificent game, his assist on Vilardis goal is stuff of highlight reels. We're witnessing an elite scoring winger at the absolute top of his game, playing all 200 feet.

Nikky: THIS is the Ehlers that I absolutely love. Managing the puck and SHOOTING instead of forcing a risky play to the middle of the ice. He does this all season and he hits 35-70 with ease and likely more.

Pionk: looks like the Pionk Slammy pair is back. I thought Samberg still had some iffy moments but overall they were solid. Neal is really timing his offensive forays will and is moving the puck so well.

Comrie. Great bounce back game. Made some really timely saves on dangerous chances.

This is fun
Great post! Thanks. Agree with your rhoughts about Stanley and Kupari. I, too, would like to see Fleury again. And, I think that Kupari should stay in. He's a better all around player than Gustaffson, imo. Comrie was solid but my butt still clenches when he draws in. Our team D really helps him out.

So happy for Ehlers getting the hattrick! Any insight as to what is different with the Winnipeg Jets this year?

Is it Scott Arneil? His assistants? Cheveldayoff who re-signed Miller and brought in Fleury and Comrie? The players?
I didn't watch this game, so I can't comment on it, but in terms of what is different it starts with Scott Arniel. Just in his interviews you have a good sense of how he thinks the game, and I wonder if all those coaching clinics he talked about didn't pay dividends. Working with Bowness he got to lay down the ground work for a defensive structure that you now see from the team. And a 4 line mentality. But now it's his style of play, which is more direct and defense oriented.

I think you have to give credit to the assistants too.

Davis Payne has changed the structure of the PP. And Arniel has used both units.

Dean Chynoweth has changed the style of the defense. Better skating out of them.

PK is still in the middle of the pack. Keeping penalties down always helps in efficiency.

Wade Flaherty has been a constant. Whatever he is doing, keep doing it.

Older fans might remember him stealing a game 7 against the Flames.

SO TLDR bored Saturday morning before the kids get up post!

I am very cautious and wasn’t going to post this yet since we are just 11 games in but what the hell .

My concern (hang with me because you will like where its going):

81Kyle ConnorL119918261996-12-0927Shelby Township, MI6.01183

That raw box scores are insane and we are riding the mother of all hot streaks (hottest in 2.0 history I assume). I haven’t even bothered to scape the shooting % data but I assume it is comically off the charts.

Connor is on pace to challenge McDavid with his 134 season

Ehlers on pace for 111 points

Appleton on pace for 67 points

I think you get where I am going. What we have here is hilariously joyously unsustainable

HOWEVER

I once we get pat the luck, I wonder if we are not seeing a bit of the Bones exit effect?

Bones took over Dallas as head coach when Monty stepped down and he worded hard at gettting the defensive system in place (at some cost to scoring). In his last season as the head coach the Stars scored 238 goals in 82 games. The following season under DeBoer the stars increased scoring significantly to 285 goals (from 238) and also decreased goals against.

Bones exits the Jets and Arny and his new assistants bring in their system and like in Dallas after Bones leaves team scoring elevates.

In saying that I will be watching this as the year progreesses and our team finds its new normal scoring level.

Bones did guide us to a 110 point season and a league leading lowest goals against but Rick had league best goaltending to prop up the numbers.
This is a really good analysis and the interesting thing is that oftentimes to build the right foundation for a team you have to strip it down and do some building.

I think Bowness did a great job of building the basics for this team, in attention to detail and playing the right way from the goalie out. One of his known shortcomings however is how his risk averse systems and play can tend to hurt the team offensively, and can sometimes lead to going into a shell with a lead which can end up backfiring.

Having a guy like Arniel, who is a little more aggressive offensively, and a little more progressive when it comes to things like player deployment, changing things up and matchups coming in after the team has Bowness' foundation hard coded into their play could be the secret sauce, here

The 'Bowness' of this is that Arniel was here as an associate so he already knew the players, our strengths and weaknesses so he could easily layer on his ideas overtop of an already really competitive structure.

We absolutely will see our offensive numbers regress to a mean, but the great thing is we can also win 1-0 and 2-1 games. This team seems so comfortable in close games, either leading or trailing, and that is *hopefully* going to pay dividends come spring.

I am extremely optimistic for this season - despite being burned several times

I'd kindly settle for a tall glass of milk.
I used to think it was a bad fit, but KFC and Vilardi are quickly showing signs of developing some weird wavelength, high IQ understanding of where each other is going to be. Apart from the obvious goals that they've connected on, over the past few games, it's as though they've already played hundreds of games together. A sharp contrast to what I've seen out of them prior to this recent stretch.

That's not a knock on Scheifele btw, it's just a great dynamic not always having to go through the center position to make everything happen. Maybe I shoud give more credit to Scheifele for recognizing that chemistry developing and giving them the room to operate, sagging off a bit. In the end, it'll pay dividends for him as well, as he already has good chemistry with both players. That line only scored one goal last night (5v5), but I thought they were pretty dangerous for the most part, and relying on each other which is huge in my books.

100%. That's not a knock on Scheifele, that's what KFC needed to do probably going back a couple years ago. I'm glad KFC doesn't want to be Brian Bellows (not the worst thing), and aim towards that Mike Bossy territory instead.

caught the first 2 periods of this one, the Jets were dominant & CBJ was clearly a tier below in terms of team quality. nice to see Monahan having a great start to the year given what happened to Gaudreau.

Did a Tennessee trip with the family last year. What a beautiful State. Nashville Broadway is indeed crazy...my kids got their first look at someone puking on the sidewalk at 2 in the afternoon. Lol.

Going to play a bunch of contenders now including Florida twice in a row. We are going to see where the team is truly at. What a cushion they have given themselves. Just need to play .500 through this stretch to still have a great record.
Agreed - if the team gets out of the next 10 games over .500, we're golden. My predictions:

Nov 2 - TB - win
Nov 5 - Utah - OTL
Nov 7 - COL - loss
Nov 9 - DAL - win
Nov 12 - NYR - win
Nov 14 - TB - OTL
Nov 16 - FLA - loss
Nov 19 - FLA - win
Nov 22 - PIT - loss
Nov 23 - NSH - OTL

I'd be happy with that.

When I was living in Atlanta in my late 20s/early 30s we did a guys trip to Nashville for a men's league hockey tournament. Not sure the exact year

Details of that weekend are VERY sketchy. Super fun town, even back then
