Post-Game Talk: Jets 5 - Hawks 4, in a SO

Waited a longggg time to see a legit banner in the rafters, for Jets 1.0 and 2.0. Unless those stanley cup champion 1896 and 1902 or whatever the years were banners they used to have at the Winnipeg Arena count (i always felt they were just a reminder of futility). I guess the Avco cup ones they used to hang were meaningful but I was too young to really remember the WHA days and I didn't get into hockey until 1980-81.

Anyways, well done on winning the Central division and locking up first overall in the west! Always best when it's done with a win and not relying on another team to lose.

It's great that the Jets won and got 1st in the Central.

But what did we learn tonight?

- No matter how much Helly practices handling the puck, it's just something he will never master. He will be adequate to stop it behind the net and give it to his D-men. Beyond that, don't even try. Keep it simple.

- Some games should just be forgotten and the tapes erased... this was one of them.

Seed
Cup Wins
Approx. % of Time
1st8~27.6%
2nd6~20.7%
3rd5~17.2%
4th3~10.3%
5th2~6.9%
6th3~10.3%
7th1~3.4%
8th1~3.4%

Since 1986
  • Top 3 seeds win the Cup over 65% of the time.
  • 1st seed has the best odds, but it’s far from dominant.
  • Middle seeds (4–6) can go deep and win, especially with hot goaltending.
  • Low seeds (7–8) rarely win, but it has happened (e.g., 2012 Kings as an 8th seed).

So while being a top seed helps, playoff success depends more on timing, health, matchups, and momentum than regular season dominance.

Just bad judgement by him on that first goal. He doesn't usually come out like that. His behind the net stuff is generally okay but he can get caught off guard sometimes and he's no Mikhail Berdin who can stick handle his way out of trouble.

Berdin also would have tried drop kicking the puck and / or clotheslining Foligno in that situation.

Downside is that he would have let in a couple of softies a few minutes later. :DD

Winning the Central and clinching 1st place in the West and now I am blitzed with a feeling of reflection on Jets 2.0. I remember the day I fell in love with hockey again. It was Team USA in 2010 at the Vancouver Olympics. Yes I know all you got the last laugh on that one and deservedly so. As a kid my dad used to tape the NHL all star game. I would wear out that video tape while I shot on my net in the basement. I fell in love with the Jets logo and Teemu Selanne during the 94 all star game. Living in Wisconsin I never had a team so I was kind of a hockey nomad for a while. I have said it before but Winnipeg reminds me of Green Bay. A town that revolves around its team.

Yes they could flame out in round 1 still but I will worry about that tomorrow.

I really thought after 2017-2018 that contending would become the norm and the Jets would have their 3-5 year window. As we all know it didn't work out that way. Laine never took the next step. Buff retired, Little had his career cut short, and Trouba wanted out. 2020-2022 felt like a franchise that missed their window. I will admit I was team rebuild. I was wrong.

Then somehow after getting waxed by Vegas we somehow got both Scheifele and Hellebuyck to sign on for hopefully the rest of their careers. Scheifele was ridiculed so much after this team peaked in 2018. Honestly rightfully so. I commend him for his attitude change. A tough pillow for any NHL star ego to handle.

I could go on and on about how Chevy has pulled off great moves. How Morrissey has been unlocked since the Jets hired Bowness. How Hellebuyck will go down as my favorite hockey player ever. But I will save the rambling.

I have loved this team since they came back in 2011.Win or lose they are my team and I am damn proud of them right now.

There was a time when we made fun of teams like Nashville for hanging up so many banners. Now I Feel nothing but pride for our team to hang as many banners as we can for this year and many more years to come.
The reason for the mocking was they created a banner for something that has never been recognized with one "western conference regular season champions".

I never knew how awesome it felt to not know who your opponent in the first round was as all the other fanbases found out theirs before you.

I mean in 2017-18 it was set in stone we were facing Minnesota.

The good news is he has most likely 7 days between games. BTO plays Canada Life next Saturday so I am guessing we get the Sunday start.
Maybe. BTO sales haven't been great and I've heard rumors of moving them over to the concert hall and/or moving them to the Sunday slot.

Apparently the Jets are also a little peeved at not playing Saturday given their likely the top team in the league. While I get that, it will guarantee a late start because you know Toronto is getting the primetime slot. Sunday might be better for their play, if not for liquor sales.

Huge win, clenching the division is massive and unreal. Stuff I dreamed of for this team going back to when we were still building through the draft in the early 2010s…

We are witnessing a historic season and I keep missing all these games. I’ll have to miss our first 1-maybe 2 playoff games too.

That said I just want to relish it as much as I can and I hope we all do as well.

Also. Super classy from the Jets to stay out re: Martinez and Maroon

no update on ehlers, they will see when they get home but he said it was a re-aggravation of the injury he just had so I assume this will be good news and he will be fine then

I take that as worse news.

I prefer to wait for a firmer estimate.

Helle is the best or one of the best goalie stick handlers in the league. It’s was just a lucky bounce.for the Hawks.
Every player including MacKinnon or Crosby has their passes knocked down … does that make them bad stick handlers?
Seriously I have never seen so many bounces go one way for a team in one game and yet the Jets never gave up with Helle making some great timely saves.
Also if the Jets would have lost tonight in regulation time … they would have clinched the central …. Dallas lost.
Jets were the better team … Chicago just got the bounces and the stats prove it.
