Post-Game Talk: Jets 4 - Stars 1

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

To be fair to TSN and Sportsnet, teams scrambling for their playoff lives are maybe a more interesting story than the Jets running away with the Central. We had an 8 point lead going into last night and now it's 10... it's not super dramatic. And Leafs fans are buttering the networks' bread, so theyb are always going to take precedence.
But had the Jets lost the focus would have shifted to doom and gloom and how the surging Stars are closing in. They would have spun it into a negative on the Jets.

I missed another one - since I retired, I seem to have less time (WTF?)
But really nice to see the guys beat the Stars - looks like the top line were having fun.
Looking at the shot clock, it looks like this one was a tight game - appears like the Jets had their Defensive A game going.
Was that the case?
Welcome to the over the hill gang!

Yeah a lot of people find retirement tougher than they expected.

Never seen the show, but wow did this just take me back. She reminded me of that English girl in the French comedy L'Auberge Espagnole from 2002. And sure enough, that's her!

Anyway, fun times! Start of my holiday, actually managed to catch the first two periods. This team is going places!

She was great in Flight.

Rantanen looked pedestrian, and according to the last few pages of the Avs last GDT Nelson has been invisible since arriving in Colorado.

Meanwhile both of the Chevy pickups have been putting their stamp on each game played, and are just elevating what we already had going on here. At this point in time I'm thrilled with how things turned out and that we still have our 1st and top prospects in the system.

It's also a historic thing, this Sportsnet antipathy towards the Jets, I think.

If you remember when the team came back in 2011, their games were broadcast almost exclusively on TSN; they even had a TSN Jets station that cable subscribers could pay extra to get. Every other Canadian team had their games carried on regional Sportsnet stations, so right off the bat, Sportsnet hated the Jets.

It's never got any better, and it probably never will.
I'm pretty sure the Sens and Habs have also had TSN as their regional TV broadcaster as well. But yea, I agree that the Jets being with TSN is one of the reasons Sportsnet seems to write the Jets off.

Just a reminder at how unbelievably absurd TSN and SportsNet would be if the grease or leaves were on the verge of winning the President's Trophy. It would be non-stop deluge, story after story, day after day, of how incredible they are. And yet here we are, TSN asking, are we better than a team ten points behind us in the standings?

f*** our media so badly. Us vs the world.

Only thing to do is to show 'em.

Day after Jets win the SC, TSN and SN will be all about Leafs trying to sign Marner.
No, wait. That will be the day Jets win. Next day will be all about TML going to extend Tavares and Marner and trade for McDavid and Makar and win the Cup next year.:laugh::laugh:

That's the thing about the Oilers though, isn't it? They're not just streaky, they're intensely so. When they're on a winning streak they can be tough to beat (although not impossible), but when they're on a bad streak they're not even remotely a playoff team. If they hit the playoffs playing like they are right now, the Kings will finally beat them, and it won't take seven games.
They started off the 2023-24 season badly, then went on a tear the rest of the way, made the playoffs and went to game 7 of the Cup final...and they were pretty good out of the gate this year, until the last couple of months. But it was at least, what, 125 games of .600+ hockey? That's quite a streak...

Honestly i didn't expect anything this season just taking it game by game but man what a Fantastic Voyage this season has been.

I know most everyone here credits Arniel but he deserves more.

He was never supposed to get another shot after failing with CBJ. If it wasn't for Jets Old Boys Club he probably wouldn't have. He has done an absolutely fantastic job. He kept the best of Bowness' systems and fixed what was wrong with them. Credit to his assistants too, but they were Arniel hires.

I'm not ignoring Chevy or the players themselves but just want to give Arniel big credit where it's due.

Results so far, :thumbu::thumbu:
If anything, they are adding to the chemistry.

I will take my ration of crow now - lots of ketchup please (French's Canadian grown tomatoes).
I have had to eat my fair share of crow this season. I have never been happier to do that so let's hope the trend continues and only the finest Canadian grow totmatoes!

This.

If I could access or post on this site, or even remember what my handle was, is, or should be, I’d say that these TDL pickups were just what we needed — seamless integration and meeting needs whilst not upsetting a near-perfect chemistry.

Gadzooks, what a team!
Amen! I was excited that Tofoli agreed to come here until I saw his effort when the going go t tough. He seemed to check out. I cannot see Schenn or Tanev doing that here.

So my daughter is in a volleyball tournament and I got home a bit late last night.

I watched the 1st period and that was one of the best periods I have seen the Jets play this season.

Quick overreaction to small sample size post:

Makes me wonder if this wasn’t our best trade deadline but time will tell.

I understand that both Schenn and “Taznev” have limitations and are complimentary assets. What I like about them so far is fit and identity. I have seen the stats on Schenn and understand what he brings and doesn’t bring but the key is what he brings our D core really needed. He has the size and toughness to replace what we lost in Dillion and our D core just got bigger and harder to play against. Branden has the energy to add to what we already have in our bottom six but he has a special swagger that is infectious. These guys aren’t taking away from our identity they are adding to it.

Schief and Connor really came to play last night.

Samberg is emerging as our second best defenseman and he took pressure off Schenn on the 2nd pair.

The defensive structure of our entire team in the first period was outstanding. That is the video you want to save and show back when the team strays.

Watching on TV the building felt like it was jumping last night.

Harley is an outstanding young defenseman. Frick what a draft pick at #18.

Dallas will be tough in the playoffs if they can get their top guys healthy.

2023 TD we got Nino for a 2nd and Namestnikov for a 4th - retained both. Pretty tough to beat that.

Samberg doesn't score enough (yet) to be considered elite. But if we are looking at defensive Dmen I think he is in that category now. Sign him for 8 years Chevy. Pay what he is worth, which is a lot.

The story about the Jets win on teh TSN website was about 2/3rd's of the way down. It was after curling and there were at least 6 or 7 Leafs or leaf related stories before it.
I agree if the Leafs were in the Jets position there would be 8 to 10 stories dedicated just to the game and another 5 to discuss how amazing it is for Canada a the yare doing so well.
It is very annoying but the Torontocentric bias will, unfortunately, never stop given the size of the Province and the vast number of Leaf fans across Canada. The jets could win the cup and a leafs story about Mitch Marner having a hang nail or Nylander deciding to wear a shirt for an interview would likely be the lead story.

I think Buffdog was asking about Rantanen with and without MacKinnon - whether he was somewhat of a product of MacKinnon's greatness.

Looking at 5v5 for the two full season prior to this one (2022-23 + 2023-24) just to exclude his lackluster moping on the Canes and adjusting to different systems or whatever was going on this year:

RantanenTOICF%GF-GA+/-GF%xGF%
with MacK1931:4956.5%128-83+4560.7%55.0%
w/o MacK794:0347.9%34-42-844.7%47.8%

If you look back a bit farther - like 2021-22, then he's great with MacKinnon (similar to above) but even better without MacKinnon. That was their Cup year. Had a deep team with Landeskog and Kadri, etc. Rantanen-MacKinnon-Landeskog was a hell of a dominant line, btw...and Rantanen without either of those guys on the ice was good, not great.

If you look at this year he's very similar to the table above with MacKinnon, and worse than the results without MacKinnon (44% CF, 11-11/50% GF, 36.5% xGF)...but it's a pretty small sample (<200 TOI) w/o MacK, and new systems, sulking and whining, etc.

TLDR: Last two years (and also this one) Rantanen hasn't looked very good without MacK. I think he's a good player, but maybe overrated because of how good he and MacK went together.

tsn headline after the Jets win the cup (im knocking on wood so hard I think my knuckles will bleed)
What does the Stanley Cup win for the Jets mean for the Leafs?

The Oilers were playing pretty well until the last couple of months. Their goaltending was pretty average, but that was enough because the team was pretty good at pushing the play...McD and Drai really tilt the ice and they're pretty deep offensively. But then the wheels seem to have fallen off... hopefully they stay off, but that team has enough pure skill to be very dangerous if they get a run of decent goaltending.

With the Oilers over the past three seasons they have lost in the Conference finals, then lost in the second round, then went to the finals last year. Looks like they will be playing LA in the first round as usual so I’m not sure they are killing themselves during this regular season. Hard for me to get a gauge if they are struggling or just pacing themselves.

It's hilarious how people will say that the Jets are only as good as Helle plays.... turns out it's true for all teams and their goalies... here's Skinner's game log since the start of February. No team can win with that kind of goaltending (and it warms my heart lol)
