It's tough to admit but Perfetti is "stuck".
He's been a favorite around our house since he joined the team as my very young son (at the time) chose him as his favorite player because they shared a first name.
When he goes on his hot streaks (5 goals in 5 games or some point streaks) it's so fun.
But this has gotten ridiculous.
Despite improving in many areas (compete, hustle) it's just not working for him. For a good chunk of the slump I would say that he was still contributing quite well.
Getting chances, hitting posts, lots of little things, tracking pucks, anticipating plays, getting clean exits and entries and on and on.
But as this dry spell has worn on you can see his confidence eroding.
I think he needs to sit for a game or 2.
But not like last year where they stapled him to the bench for way too long.
Sit him, give him a jolt and then get him back in there.
Without a functional 2nd scoring line we are likely first round fodder for some team.
Lowry's line and the other 2/3 line need to contribute more.
Nino, Cole, Vlad (or his replacement) all need to do a little bit more.
A couple of extra goals each on the season can be the difference maker in a few games.
Obviously a big part of our early season success was balanced scoring.
Vilardi was sort of AWOL for goals early on and the team as a whole was carrying the load.
Remember when it seemed like we would score 5 to 6 goals every game...
As our first line ramped up their production it seems like everyone else has sort of dipped.
I think the 6 goal games were Quality of Competition and the early season jets. Grind into the middle of the season and the games are generally in the 5 goals range, total. And the Jets try to be on the right side of that .
Having the best scoring top line in the league is great. 3 20 goal scorers with 33 games left to play.
I look at Adam Lowry up there in scoring with Matty Beniers, Fantilli, Hintz, Josh Norris, ROR, Brock Nelson, he's ahead of Cozens or Frost. And he wins matchups. The guy should be the Selke front runner.
Nino is up there with guys like Fiala, Lehkonen, Slafkovsky, Lafreniere for scoring. Those are top 6 players, some of whom get more PP time.
Ehlers is PPG.
Namestnikov is +13 now, up there in scoring with guys like Hayton, Danault. Byfield. That's definitely a top 9 impact.
I think the functional 2nd scoring line began again once Ehlers and Perfetti were split. Ehlers scored on Lowry's line. Scored with Nino.
Last night Nik was a little too free wheeling with the puck making poor puck choices, that he wouldn't make if he was sitting beside the captain on the bench waiting for his next shift. But he's dynamic, can go either way.
Perfetti is the one who is ice right now, among top 9 players.
I do think sitting him wouldn't hurt, might get him fired up to come back strong.
However I think the focus with this coach is defense. If the Jets can win the Jennings again, with Comrie not being nearly as dominant as Brossoit was last year, that would be an accomplishment.
Being able to grind out some goals, without fancy plays, is nice. It's playoff hockey. Learning to win 2-1 in the playoffs is where I suspect Arniel is trying to get this team.
A team that can be effective 5 on 5, in limiting chances, kill opposition with their PP, and work towards becoming a stronger penalty killing team, with a lot of speed up front.
Not sure where Cole fits in there. I'd say as top 6 depth, down the stretch run. Maybe back on the 4th line again, where the goals don't come easy, from time to time.
