Post-Game Talk: Jets 3 - Avs 2 in OT

The ref who called the penalty on Ehlers for a beautifully performed hip check needs to go to the minors or get glasses.
I've got a t-shirt for that...

Avs board complain plenty about Rantanen. They’re not fond of his game this season and many hope he leaves in Free Agency for the speculated contract he’s seeking.

Fan boards are odd places. The historical hate for Marner in Toronto is similar. The big contract and his no showing in the playoffs every year seems to have him clearly in the scapegoat hot seat.

Listened to the game...

Jets still hard on the forecheck but Avs sounded a lot more aggressive in taking the body

There are a few games this year where the Jets do seem to recover from an aggressive speed team - at least partially - thats a good sign

Samberg still knicked - Pionk having a contract year... lets hope its more, because Chevy going to sign him for sure - scoring RHD is the rarest commodity in the league

Getting to the point of the season where we just need to pick a d core and run with it - if Stan is the man, I want Miller with him...

Helle covers up a lot of warts on this team

definitely odd to browse the avs threads and see so much disdain for rantanen over there thats for sure... is he really playing that bad?

Why has the first line gone so cold?
Scheif should have had the GWG, that was a helluva save by Blackwood.
Stan's been solid for a while now. Gave up that shutout goal and everyone wanted to crucify him. I feel like the 6th D spot is his.
I noticed he got the PK minutes instead of Fleury last night. Fleury had a couple of bad giveaways, both created scoring chances. I wouldn't be surprised if Heinola comes in for Fleury next game, to keep the rotation fresh.

It seemed like KC was a bit afraid to shoot the puck and was trying to overpass it or has he been doing that all season?

I have always felt he is a great player. I know he plays with Mac so life is good but dude has gone over 100 points the last two seasons and is heading there again this season.

Always interesting to read other boards after losses. I was reading theirs this morning.

Inevitably, the losing team's fan base feels it's due to their team sucking and it's rarely about the other team doing well. This is the nature of sports fan boards. Mackinnon and Makar didn't escape criticism either.

Reality of course is that the Jets and the Avs are both very good teams when all is said and done. I thought last night's game was really enjoyable to watch to be honest. Two good teams really wanting the win.

Also as a side note I thought Appleton had a good first game back. He's a valuable player even if he's not scoring much.

Nice to see the team respond to a couple of things, first a couple of losses lately including the stinker against Utah which included the coach blowing a gasket, and second, the loss of their captain, and further weakening an already weak position (centre).

You obviously need the players, but I really like the Jets mixing up the "types" on the top 9. When everyone is healthy and if they want to go back to CSV, I can see that considering how well they have played this year. But I'm liking the look of having a mixture of skill, speed, and grit (physicality, board work, net front, etc.) in lines 2 and 3. I like Names, but if you could get one more centre that can help bring some more offense, you could really have 3 solid lines in the playoffs and have Names being a utility guy on the 4th.

Re: Appleton

That guy does so many little things properly away from the puck. Causal fans will only notice players when they have the puck on their stick, but a guy like Apples might play 10-12 minutes a game and only possess the puck for less than 15 seconds of that time. What guys do the other 98% of the time is the differences between wins and losses

Iafallo, Barron and Gus are other guys that fall into the same category. I'd even add Kupari as someone that's emerging into that. Body positioning above the other team in the O zone, close puck support and taking passing lanes away with proper stick position are examples of things that lesser skilled guys can focus on to carve out a career in the NHL if they aren't big scorers

I also think these are the things that are being drilled into the young guys in the AHL that they need to show consistent mastery of before being promoted to the Jets

I think the Jets were trying to be too fancy for much of the night...fancy's great when it's clicking, but when it's not it just ends up in dampening the offence (where you don't get a shot off because you're passing too much). But the Jets have been doing well with quality-over-quantity lately. I think it's tough for the top 6 to shift gears and try to get ugly goals. They kind of mince around for a while before they decide to f*** it and just get right in there...

He is generally solid, but, has a mistake or 2 a game as I imagine all 5/6 do. We as fans generally focus on the one bad play as it ends up in the back of the net.
I think the team views him as their 5 meaning less likely to come out of line up than his partner.
He has for the large part cleaned up his game and doesn’t take as many penalties. At the beginning he took a lot. Still leads team in penalties.
Also as fans we generally like the shiny new thing and Stan is reliable, but he is what he is. He is not fast and shiny like tiny who may have a lot more potential if given right situation in a less risk averse system. If he went to San Jose he’d quickly jump to top 4 and we’d feel like we lost one as coaches don’t want to take risk they’d rather low risk low reward.
Sorry are you saying that Samberg is the #5 D on the Jets????
Strange math if that's the case.
Seems like he's more 3/4 depending on the placement of Demelo on that list.

no samberg is number 3/4. Stan seems like the 5 miller, heinola, fleury, all seem like the 6. People might not agree with Stan being so high in rotation, but, based on usage that is what I see.
So yeah, weird math if I was saying that.

If we did add a player to bump Namestnikov to the 4th and everyone was healthy I wonder who would be the add man out? Let's assume like earlier in the year the 4th is Barron/Kup/Iaffalo. Now add Vlad there... who do we take out???? They like Kupari but I think it would be him that is removed. Just my guess.

As of now I can't really dispute that.
When Samberg was out and Fleury had the long run in the top 4 I thought it was him.
But he'll have to retake that position it seems and he may not really get that chance.

It's tough to admit but Perfetti is "stuck".
He's been a favorite around our house since he joined the team as my very young son (at the time) chose him as his favorite player because they shared a first name.
When he goes on his hot streaks (5 goals in 5 games or some point streaks) it's so fun.
But this has gotten ridiculous.
Despite improving in many areas (compete, hustle) it's just not working for him. For a good chunk of the slump I would say that he was still contributing quite well.
Getting chances, hitting posts, lots of little things, tracking pucks, anticipating plays, getting clean exits and entries and on and on.
But as this dry spell has worn on you can see his confidence eroding.

I think he needs to sit for a game or 2.
But not like last year where they stapled him to the bench for way too long.

Sit him, give him a jolt and then get him back in there.
Without a functional 2nd scoring line we are likely first round fodder for some team.
Lowry's line and the other 2/3 line need to contribute more.
Nino, Cole, Vlad (or his replacement) all need to do a little bit more.

A couple of extra goals each on the season can be the difference maker in a few games.

Obviously a big part of our early season success was balanced scoring.
Vilardi was sort of AWOL for goals early on and the team as a whole was carrying the load.
Remember when it seemed like we would score 5 to 6 goals every game...
As our first line ramped up their production it seems like everyone else has sort of dipped.

With the way things are right now and with a bit of luck we won't need to worry about them in the first round, just have to hope someone else takes them out for us.

Would love to see the Flames or Nucks in the first round.

True. If the season ended to day the Jets would play the 2nd wild card team being either Van or Cal. I think Cal would give the Jets a bit of difficulty but not like Col would

Utah is starting Vejmelka today so looks like we get Ingram again on the tail end of their B2B tomorrow.

I think we need to try perfetti at center. He's not playing badly. But he's not finding the net or making plays down low. He might be better suited in the middle.

Heinola is clearly the more skilled LD among Fleury and Stan, but they really covet size because we are a small team without them. I favor skill, but appreciate size when it's a good player.

Heinola was playing really well before he sat

One of the Jets challenges is that they haven't found 'pairings' for half the lineup
Connor-Scheif
Nino-Lowry
Ehlers-?
Perfetti-?
Barron-Gus

I like Names but I don't see him as an ideal fit... Ehlers/Copp were good together in a short sample, same with Ehlers/Nino and Ehlers/Lowry
I don't know who fits with Perfetti - think I'd try him with Gus and try to get the AHL chemistry back

CSV
Nino-Names-Ehlers
Barron-Gus-Perfetti
Iafallo-Kupari-Apples

Then I'd sit Names once Lowry is back

Question , do you think every team is better than the Jets? You complement other teams like crazy but the Jets are full of weakness's all the time. 32-14-3 , 2 points out of 1st overall in the NHL, second best goals for and against with a +50. Washington is +51 and then a massive drop to the 3rd best at +39 . I say this is a damn good team, one of the best in the NHL.
I appreciate the question. I have said this before that my "problem" is I am no longer satisfied with regular season success (perhaps I am taking their success for granted and I should not since very few Jet teams have reached this level of regular season success). Nonetheless, I want to see playoff success. They were a top 5 team last regular season but one of the first teams out. There is also a long history of President's Trophy winning teams exiting the playoffs early. Finally, I follow the Jets closely. Attend several games in person and watch almost all other games on tv. I do not care about other teams success or failures but I do have concerns about the Jets being playoff ready, which is different than thinking every team is better than the the Jets. I also think there is a blue print for beating the Jets that LA, Vegas and the Ducks all recently implemented to beat them. I hope that answers your question and on for you, which is do you think the Jets top line is as good as Col's? I do not but certainly open to your opinion as it might change mine.

Well said and so true. Most fans only look at the score sheet ... true fans look at the players work away from the play. Lots of times you can't see it unless you are at the game but the coaches can see it ... that's why I find some of the comments funny armchair coaches think they know more watching from a screen. I don't have a problem with a player (Perfetti) not scoring if he is playing good hockey and is not giving up goals against.
Sure players make mistakes like Samberg was up at the blueline when MacKinnon got the puck in the slot and scored but Samberg played great on the PK at the end of the game to makeup for it. Actually mistakes are good if you learn from them especially if the team wins.

I would not sit Names over Kupari. He has more offensive upside and better defensive acumen. but a line of Baron-gus or Kupari and Perfetti is intriguing.
Ehlers is hard to play with and perfetti despite being unable to score still produces assists and shows some defensive ability.
