On the Kings board they are talking about a buyout.
This soon? I know the consensus is we want PLD to be a flop ( although hard to be considered that when you are on a guaranteed contract and living life in LA) but if you look at his first year here vs the last 2 he was a different player. I think next year he will be back to the old PLD ( consistently , inconsistent but a good player)for them and at least be their no. 2 centre.

The big concern for LA has to be that PLD is happy he got his first big boy contract, and won't bring it until he's up for another one.

Ehlers post game interview: "The power play was terrible all night. At least the one I was on."

Hot take: Europeans give better interviews than North Americans.

Notice how Ehlers is capable of giving the same kind of candid responses that we liked for Laine, except they are direct and forceful and don't reek of callow entitlement.

The buyout stuff is just fan talk. Any buyout is gonna be on the books till 2038 or something ridiculous, that doesn't happen. He'll be atleast a servicable 2C in the long run so LA brass will have more patience than the fans.

Fans gotta be fans.

If PLD keeps playing like this at some point the Kings might look at a buyout, but that would be an absolutely punishing cap penalty if they did it now, with him being a cap penalty until the end of the 2038 season.

I'm sure LA would much rather try to get PLD going one way or another - they know he's a solid (if sometimes inconsistent) player.

I don't think one informs the other.

The team really likes kupari and I think at any rate he was going to be up here.

Like I said I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't return til after the asb
If Kupari performs anywhere near where Iafallo and Vilardi are performing we'll have to put HFKings on a collective suicide watch. Or a Rob Blake homicide watch.

Actually one of the posters on HFKings ran the numbers and put together a solid business case favouring the buyout - if it's done this season. Millions of dollars saved, but the buyout has to happen while PLD is 25 years old or some such:

If I'm the Kings CFO I would have to at least suggest, if not recommend the buyout.

FWIW I take no pleasure, literally zero schadenfreude, from watching what the HFKings posters are going through. They're a classy and knowledgeable bunch of hockey fans and deserve better than the quagmire this trade has put them in.

I don't like them enough to offer a takeback though...

The buyout talk is based on a hypothetical scenario in which PLD keeps playing like he is now.

If it looks like this is who he is from here on out, a buyout has to be considered.

I assume at some point, he'll start playing better. Hopefully in the playoffs.

But so far he's been terrible. I can't stand watching him play. He makes watching the Kings so much less enjoyable. I've never seen a player consistently give such little effort.

When he plays bad, he plays very loudly and noticeably bad. The problem for the Kings is I think market pressure could actually be a benefit to him, in terms of motivation - I'm not sure the Kings have that, at least from the media/fan side of things - You'll need to find some sort of internal organizational motivation to replicate that.

I've said this before, but I thought you guys got him on a great contract, and would have had no problem with the Jets signing the exact same deal at the time - I worried he would fall off after he got his payday, but I kinda worry about that for every player, you just have to suck it up and sign the deal, that's the business hockey teams are in.

I still liked the Jets side of the deal better, probably because I had to deal with MTL fans gloating about how they'll give us a B-Prospect and a 3rd-rounder because he only wants to be in Quebec for two years straight.

That scenario is quickly moving from the hypothetical to the demonstrable. And I just don't get it. Why would anyone blessed with such talent be so indifferent? And what effect does his lazy play have on the mindset of the less gifted teammates who are busting their asses out there for a fraction of the compensation?

And yeah, maybe he'll turn it around. Maybe there's something going on in his personal life that's affecting his play and once said personal matter is put behind him he'll start earning his salary. There's a lot of unknowns in play to be gambling on not buying him out.

However a buyout would be such a bad look on the GM that I cannot see it happening unless something completely outlandish happens (felony arrest? Suspicion of carrying on a lively barnyard romance? Grasping at straws here).

PLD looked the same him first season here, but he had injury troubles for the first time in his career that season, if I recall.

The last couple of years we had from him were pretty good (minus the collapse and playoffs last year where everyone was bad).

I mean if you were the owner why would you allow the GM to spend roughly $27 million to buy a player out. That would be a fireable offense to me.

Sounds like some Jets are sick, some are injured , some have nagging aches, and some are healthy. Pretty well a normal season that all teams go thru.
That's what happens playing 8 games in 13 days. People don't realize how taxing it is on the body playing B2B and 3 in 4 ... its insane 8 games with only 5 days off.

I have not watched that many Kings games but the ones I did ... PLD and his wingers just are a bad mix not on the same page. Maybe try new linemates.
I'm not knocking Byfield but in those game I saw he has stone hands ... he should have at least 20 goals with the chances he gets with Kopitar setting him up.

I've been in the habit of just Youtube searching "Winnipeg Jets" and thought this video did a good job of explaining how the team plays and what makes them successful - A good video when a lot of hockey youtube content is lacking IMO.

He shows why the jets are so good in defensive transition - the D are able to play aggressively in the neutral zone because they are so confident the spare forward will be filling in for them. Its a standard NHL defensive structure, just executed to perfection in nearly every instance.

Also interesting that Bones was upset with the team's performance "As soon we were challenging for first place, and teams are coming after us," last year.

Different mentality this year, that's for sure.
