They'd never get that kind of value. For the same reason Askarov in NSH won't either.

The last goalie traded for a 1st rder was Schneider, after a couple great seasons in the NHL. And it turned out pretty bad for the receiving team.

Fact is, goalies hold very little value to the acquiring teak unless said goalie has proved that 1- he is NHL starter material and 2- is younf enough to follow their core
Sure, I don't necessarily disagree, but there's pretty much no reason or incentive for Guerin to trade him after his NA rookie season if he's going to get a mid to late 1st.

Yeah he just won't be traded. When you take a C or D in the first round you can usually always flip those guys down the line for something of value, whether it's another prospect or in a package deal for a rental or something like that. When you take a goalie in the first round you're pretty much committing to that player until you either give up on them completely or they leave through UFA. Again, why you usually don't use a first on a goalie, and why goalies like Wallstedt fall on draft day.

Minnesota won't move him, nor should they.

If they were that colossally stupid to move him in a hockey trade I'd offer Bourgault+a d prospect not named Broberg.

The issue is, and you'll see it with Minnesota fans in this thread, the team that has him will value him more than anyone in the league.

Keep him, wait and see if he turns the corner into starter territory and then move out the older guy for a decent return.

If he for whatever reason doesn't want to, Wallstedt and a nice plus would be a solid offer.
Not really
Wallstedt would have to be the nice plus
Other teams could easily offer up more
No. Cooley will be a Yote

Wallstedt hasn't played a single NHL game yet. Perhaps a bit too premature to call him a #1 - Gustavsson isn't a bonafide one either.

Also, nobody is going to offer anything that you'd like to see. It's very rare that goalies are acquired for their potential, and considering Wallstedt is all potential and zero experience, it's safe to say he's going to start his career with the Wild.

I'm not a Minnesota fan so I'm not sure what their pool looks like but Wallstedt+ for a guy who wouldn't sign (if it ever came to that) what be a great haul
If you feel that strongly about it, go ahead and post it on the Yotes board. Don't you think there'd be a lot of competition if Zona were forced to unload Cooley?

Ok. I also think like any NCAA free agent, the competition level for the services would be limited because they would need to know he would sign there. If he came out and said only place I won't play is Arizona, then it may be competitive

Did people not watch Vegas go through 4 goalies to win a Stanley cup. There is wayyyy too much variance with goalies with performance and/or injury. Vegas just proved you can never have enough goalies. Unless your offered a deal you can’t refuse (which is super unlikely), you keep walstad

Goalies don't have a ton of value in general, unless we're talking a Vasi or Shesterkin type. Even then, their value pales in comparison to a D or C at that same ability level. That's why you usually don't take goalies in the first round. It's just not good value.

I agree. You can win the cup with nobodies and journeymen like Adin Hill and Darcy Kuemper, but doing it without a top 10 center is pretty much unheard of.

Filip Gustavsson is far, far from proven enough for Minny to just say "yup, got the crease locked up for years, time to deal Wallstedt." He had a nice season last year, but only played 39 games, and the year before that he was splitting his time between the AHL and NHL, unable to make the Senators full time.

If Gustavsson plays at the level of a strong starter for the next couple years, then yeah, maybe Minny look to trade Wallstedt then. For now this thread is way too early, though.

Then don’t comment in the thread lol. Can people not have some conversation on hf?
Yes you can have a pointless conversation about something that isn't going to happen. There definitely is nothing else to talk about with the draft 2 days away and all the potential and current trades that have happened. Have at er.

It just really isn't viable to trade 1st round goalie picks like that. You have to let them establish themselves as an NHLer before they have anything resembling the value you want, and initially invested in them.

Wallstedt is tracking well and has worlds of potential, but he's also yet to really establish he can be a top-end NHL #1Goaltender. It's a big jump. That makes guys like that a huge gamble that could easily blow up in an acquiring team's face and they get nothing. Netminders are such an all or nothing position. You can't just shuffle them down to the 3rd line to get some utility out of them if they're not #1 caliber.

On the other end of things, Minnesota have invested a top pick in the guy, along with development time and effort. Even just getting a mid-1st back for him would be a less than lateral move for them. You've lost all that "time value of money" aspect and investment in getting him toward the NHL, flushed for no reason.

Have to find a way to get him the NHL games to establish he's got that credible NHL #1G ability. Then you can decide which of Wallstedt/Gustavsson makes more sense to move. Make that big Cory Schneider type trade if you have to. Or maybe Gustavsson is one of a million flash in the plan guys who regresses back to nothing and you're just thankful you've got a top tier fallback plan like Wallstedt.

Canucks have gone through all the ups and downs of this sort of thing. From having Schneider making Luongo expendable, to being unable to trade Bobby Lou and moving Schneider, to suddenly having another burgeoning #1G with Eddie Lack, who completely fizzled and being completely glad that they had a high pick like Demko waiting in the wings to step in when everything went to crap with everyone else in the system including the Veteran Miller they overpaid to come in and stabilize things. Goaltending is a fluid situation. Always good to have multiple fallback plans in the works because you have to get those in motion years before you really need them.
