Pre-Game Talk: Jerks vs Jersey (First Round Matchup)

We’ve been better down the middle with Janks, and the wingers are interchangeable. Janks should be playing.

Nikishin not playing shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone at this point. All the obvious reasons have been beaten to death. Injuries or being down two or three games (or we get absolutely crushed today) is the most likely path for him to get in, but even then it shouldn’t be a surprise if Morrow goes in first or if Rod rides the six D we’ve got all the way to 0-4. That’s Rod. Maybe there’s a surprise but it shouldn’t be a surprise at all if he stays Rod.

stupid afternoon games , next year , can someone reserve the arena for 2 months straight from noon to 6.30 , so we ca play at 7 , in my days games started at 8 , they would never do an afternoon games to Montreal or Toronto especially at home , playoff games should be at night , football and baseball day , 3 out of the 4 games are not at 7 , really pisses me off i would kick bunnies of my yards if there was any , i hope game 5 to 7 wont be afternnon games too

Agreed.

Also, why didn't Rod have Roslovic-Jankowski-Carrier? Why not scratch Robinson and keep Jankowski who is a natural centerman instead of putting Roslovic as the 4th C?

It makes no sense. Also, yeah, Janky is a big player. Not only is that something that's more important in the playoffs, but I'd argue even more so for the 4th line to have a little grit and grind; which would compliment Carrier on the line. We all know Janky has offense. He's been a pleasant surprise, and a player I want us to keep around in the future.
The only reasoning I came up with is the pp. Which might be the worst in the playoffs.

I hope there won’t be a 5-7 and Canes take care of business

Agree with you though.

So the real question is, were we that good or was Jersey that bad?
I think a bit of both. Honestly think we can make the conference finals (largely because I think Caps/Habs are a weak opponent) and finally win a game in that series. Idk about making cup finals AND winning it all but I do think we are significantly better than our last few weeks suggested.

Wasn't able to watch any of it but the highlights afterwards, though I heard bits of it on the radio.

A promising start. The final score doesn't matter. Maybe it could have been 5 or 6 to 1, but who cares. GF and GA don't count in the playoffs, just wins. What is more important is we beat them soundly and found cracks in their game. Markstrom got pissed. Devils fans were saying Keefe looked dejected, said outright that his team would be outshot in the series, and said after the game that he needed to find solutions to our system. He split up the one dangerous Devils line to try to get matchups going. I'm not too worried about the Devils looking more even in the 3rd as we mostly played a shutdown game there, and did so successfully. The Canes at this point are one of the most clutch teams in the league at shutting it down in the third, game 6 vs the Rags notwithstanding.

As far as lineups go, I don't think Rod will move players much, especially after a win. If I were couch coaching I'd put in Kochetkov in game 2. Not because Freddie was bad, but because Kochetkov plays so much better at home, and Andersen is solid on the road. Unless we pull off a rare sweep, I don't like Freddie having to start all the games. We could feasibly slide in Jankowski as well for Robinson or Roslovic, though both of those guys had good games. Really everyone contributed nicely from what I heard and read.

I highly doubt Nikishin will get in. Even if we're up 3-0 and have no pressure, I bet Rod still sticks with his guns. Burns still gives me aneurysms but playoff Burns is traditionally a better player and I think he'll give us some more good hockey.

Oh, and as Tripp said, go high on Markstrom. He'll save everything at ice level. I think this is part of why we had a lot of shots go high and miss the net. The scouting is evident.

I mean, this seems like pretty good natured ribbing all things considered.
Problem with NJ (or "northern" fans in general), is that it's really hard to tell the satire from the reality, because there are 100% a very large group of folks up there who literally think exactly like this...not a vocal minority either. I'd say it's 50/50 whether it's just really well-done satire or actually someone's genuine opinion.

Hard to bitch after a nice win but.........While I know Robinson's main role isn't scoring, he had 2 clear breakaways (both on my end of the ice) and he didn't even come close to finishing either one of them. I'm sorry, but in the playoffs every goal is a massive event and Jankowski shouldn't be sitting. He's strong defensively and has the chops to finish opportunities. Roslovic on the other hand had a very good game....man that release is off the charts good. Hit the bar on one when he had very little time-n-space with a rocket.

This, He really. really f***ed up that one. I'd sit him for Jankowski

Hard to say he should sit for missing the shot on his breakaway opportunities while most of the other guys couldn't even generate a breakaway because they are too slow. I don't fault him for missing opportunities the other guys can't even generate.

Devils fans are pure class.

The Boberry biscuit reference was a nice callout tbh.

Maybe I need to have another cup of coffee, but what aging Swede is he talking about? Fast is the only one that seems to fit, but he wasn’t an offseason addition and didn’t peak a long time ago. Puzzled.

The problem with NJ is that they're the ignored sibling runts of both NYC and Philly but think they are somehow superior to either. Even Staten Island residents take solace that at least they're not from Jersey

Yes, but also...#ExperienceCanesHockey Seriously, whenever we have a breakaway I'm pretty much already resigned to it being no goal, because you can probably count on one hand how many we score each year. Doesn't matter if it's Aho, Robinson, Slavin, Orlov, Svech, etc, none of them can consistently score a breakaway to save their lives

Agreed, and the fact that, again (as stated above), nobody on this team can score on a f***ing breakaway. That said, Janky really should be in in place of Robinson or Roslo, and even though Roslo had a decent game I'm probably leaning towards sitting him because he doesn't bring a ton other than his shot (which hasn't been effective in some time). Robinson is more suited to that grinder role, plus he can PK
