Pre-Game Talk: Jerks vs Jersey (First Round Matchup)

The number of empty seats on Tuesday at puck drop is going to be a sight to behold. I know we are a bottom of the barrel matchup market-wise, but this schedule is enormously terrible.

Who wants to do the Game 1 Thread? (This is NOT me volunteering lol).

@Bub, @MrazeksVengeance...?

Either way, just SO HYPED for meaningful hockey again.

Lighting my candles for our goalies, but if they can just not IMPLODE, I think we've got some wins in us.

We'll see.

I CANNOT…

Unless we make the second round and play Washington, than I am going balls to the wall.

carolina vs new jersey - a break down of regular season series...

i'm bored so i decided to break down how each team did in their regular season series(es?) against the rest of the league. i'm using points percentage. they went 2-2 against each other.

Carolina:
good -
winning pts% against 15 teams
9 of those are "sweeps"
2 sweeps of playoff teams (dallas, vegas)
1 non-sweep "win" against a playoff team (washington)

neutral -
went .500 against 7 teams
5 of those are playoff teams (avs, oilers, devils, blues, jets)

bad -
"lost" against 9 teams
3 were "sweeps"
2 sweeps by playoff teams (kings, wild)
5 non-sweep "losses" against playoff teams (panthers, habs, sens, tampa, toronto)

biggest wtf - not being able to get a point off nashville

Jersey:
good -
winning pts% against 14 teams
7 of those are "sweeps"
3 sweeps of playoff teams (oilers, wild, habs)
2 non-sweep "wins" against playoff teams (panthers, washington)

neutral -
went .500 against 7 teams
3 of those are playoff teams (canes, kings, blues)

bad -
"lost" against 10 teams
6 were "sweeps"
4 sweeps by playoff teams (avs, stars, vegas, jets)
3 non-sweep "losses" against playoff teams (sens, tampa, toronto)

biggest wtf - not being able to get a point off san jose

i think if you look closely at the data, it will become clear i wasn't telling a lie when i said "i'm bored."

On regular season attributes, Devils have an advantage in goal and on combined special teams. Their PK is very good and their PP has been terrific whereas our PK is great but PP is meh (btw: Chicago Wolves PK % is almost equivalent to Canes….its a system problem).

Interestingly, I'm pretty sure that Markstrom has been quite outperformed by Allen for a while now. Believe he's been dog shit since the Four Nations break ended. But, he's a good goalie and can certainly turn it around.

Yep. Playoffs gonna be playoffs. Some struggling guys are going to step up, some stars will disappoint, and we all know some really good teams are going to be out in Round 1, and I'd bet at least one of them will lose convincingly.

Just a fun bit of trivia but this will be the sixth playoff series the canes have with the devils, easily the most of any team since the relocation. If you go back to the Hartford years though the devils still come in second to the bruins and habs who they’ve played 7 times each

And really that season should be way more celebrated than it is- the entire league was just playing for the honor of losing to Detroit that year and the canes actually put up a hell of a fight
I was at Game 3.

It was a terrific but deflating game with Wings scoring near the end of third period to tie.

then of course losing in the third OT......Game 1 of Florida series gave me PTSD.
