As this situation continues to drag on:

Please keep the conversation pertinent to the topic and avoid making it personal.

Debate about the management of the salary cap and the performance of the general manager fits into the context of the conversation, but we’ll avoid dividing fans into camps like “pro-player” and “team apologist”.

Thanks!

Continue if you must. No flaming!

Worst case scenario, If Swayman doesn’t get signed before the December deadline do we keep his rights or is he a free agent next offseason?

Keep his rights, and lose another year of FA

That isnt true, he will be 27 in 2 years which makes him a group 3 UFA regardless of contract status. The lack of signing only affects his group 6 status but he wasnt going to make that anyways.

Edit - just to be clear that does not effect next offseason, he doesnt sign by Dec 1 he is still Boston property next summer. The summer after that however he will be a UFA regardless unless under contract. He could technically go play in russia for the next two seasons and then come back as a UFA.

Swayman would be crazy to not play this year. In fact, he's crazy if he misses any significant amount of the regular season. IMO he should try to get a 4 year deal around $6.5-$7M now and then cash in again after that for an 8 year deal. His next contract in a few years could be $11M AAV for 8 years if things go well. So potentially ~$115M in earnings for those 2 contracts.

"According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, Swayman is specifically seeking an eight-year contract. LeBrun noted that the Bruins' preference is to lock Swayman up to a long-term deal as well.

However, while the Bruins and Swayman are both looking for a long-term deal, the big issue at this juncture is their average annual value asking prices. It is holding up a contract getting done, and LeBrun noted that the Bruins and Swayman are still far apart because of it.

LeBrun also provided another significant update. The NHL insider reported that the Bruins have set an internal deadline to get Swayman signed by - their season opener on Oct. 8 against the Florida Panthers."

If that is true, I wonder what it actually means? Is it by Oct. 8 we cave to Swayman if they are still far apart? They look to trade him? They give up and try again next summer while Sway sits the year out? It seems kind of weird in light of the report that they are not close to a deal.

Sounds like a threat.

Don't sign by opening night, have a nice season off.

They will start shopping him if he isn't in by the opener. If they were convinced he was their long term guy at long term money he would be signed. Guessing the B's are around 8/6.5 per and Swayman is 8/8.5-9 per. Long term for the Bruins could also mean 4-6 years. Just sounds like an impasse right now.

It's definitely the club's prerogative to lock him in long term now.
With the cap going up, the AAV likely only goes up as well if they go one year deal or short bridge deal.

It's the player's prerogative to maximize his value. Why is he going to cut the club any slack if he's going to sign long term at an AAV that's undervalue by the middle of the deal?

As far as I'm concerned, the only deadline that matters is December 1st, unless the Bruins are seriously considering saying on October 7th "This is our last,, best offer. there will not be another."

Who blinks first?

And what if neither side blinks?

The whole thing has just gotten weird. I have to believe (because in spite of what a few here think, Sweeney is not an idiot) that either a) Sway's camp were not honest up front before formal negotations started about what they were looking for or b) Sweeney knew and thought it would go like most negotiations and land somewhere in the middle between the two initial positions. Maybe c) the ask changed once they started actually negotiating? I believe it is that, or Swayman has refused to budge much from his initial position. I don't see Sweeney (whatever we think of him) dealing Ullmark without a really strong belief that re-signing Swayman was going to happen under their internal pay structure.

Any player that signs an 8 year deal is going to have their deal undervalue by the middle of the deal unless we slam into another flat cap wasteland like we had for several years recently. By year 5 of his deal Draisaitl won't be a top-3 salary.

You sign the 8 year deal to get certainty. Or you play it like Auston Matthews and sign shorter deals where you can continually increase your number with multiple contracts.

What bothers me is the insistence that one side or the other is to blame for no contract being signed when we don't know what the offers are. Maybe the Bruins have offered 8x$8.25 and Swayman is holding at 8x$9.5. Maybe the Bruins are still at a 4 year deal in the $6.5M range and Swayman has asked for 8x$7.75M. We don't know, and anyone projecting blame for this is doing so from a place of bias.

Regardless of what was said beforehand, Sweeney knew it would be a risk if he traded Ullmark without having Swayman signed.

Clearly he was willing to take that risk to get something for Ullmark.

Sportsnet and TSN have released their annual Top 50 players and it's interesting re: Swayman and how he is regarded by the Canadian Media.

There are 5 goaltenders on both lists. The one outlier is Sportsnet had Saros at #49 but TSN didn't rank him in their Top 50. There seems to be some close consensus among the 5 goaltenders who made both lists.

The 5 goaltenders on both lists are as follows:

Jeremy Swayman (Age 25) - SN #45, TSN #37

Sergei Bobrovsky (Age 36) - SN #43, TSN #39

Andrei Vasielievsky (Age 30) - SN# 39, TSN #42

Connor Hellebucyk (Age 31) - SN# 22, TSN #22

Igor Shesterkin (Age 28) - SN#19, TSN # 17

Is a 8-year deal with a contract in the 9-10 million range really that out of line for a guy who seems like consensus says is a Top 5 goaltender in this league right now? And the youngest of that Top 5? Is it that big of a risk for the Bruins considering you'll be getting the absolute prime of his career?

I don't know the answer and am not looking to get into the debate. Just thought this was interesting food-for-thought.

Hope everyone is having a great autumn and pre-season!

Absolutely, but I have to believe he thought it was fairly low-risk going in. That or he believes in Korpi enough to not have worried lol.

The last sentence is the equivalent of mom and dad telling a 5 year old that they aren’t going to go to Disney World if he doesn’t behave.

A threat as empty as it is hollow.
