Both the eye test and analytics back up that Walman is better.

Based on what Wings fans are saying in here about Petry, I'm not trusting their eye test on any sort of evaluation.

Walman has a grand total of 1 season of being a regular defenseman above a #6 role. I'm not buying for a second that Walman is better than a #3 defenseman (which is what Petry is) based on a 63 game sample size.

If Petry isn't washed or overpaid. Keep him. That simple. Stop firing up threads trying to pawn him off on the Wings. That ship sailed more than 8 years ago.

"Stop firing up threads trying to pawn him off"

There has been a grand total of 2 threads made on the trade board about Petry in the last 9 months. One was this one and one stemmed from a debate on the Penguins board about what his value would look like.

Again, just say "no thanks, Petry is too old and too expensive for what we want". If Wings fans wouldn't be making absolutely stupid statements in this thread, no Penguins fan would be disagreeing.

You can not trust our eye test and we can not trust yours. Every conversation I've seen from your fans about Petry is y'all desperately trying to trade him off with retention or as a cap dump.

I'm not interested in Petry because he's old and expensive. I respectfully decline the notion of trading for him as it simply isn't a proper fit for our rebuilding team at this moment. I thank you for the intelligent and challenging discourse and pray you forgive me and my lowly fanbase for our collective stupidity.

And because he sucks. And all of our players are better than him, even our worst defensive prospects, even our towel boys, even the concession stand workers who have never put on a pair of skates in their lives. I wouldn't trade for him if he personally guaranteed to pay me the entirety of his salary and the entire value of his net worth. I wouldn't wipe the floor with him if I spilled my goblet.

Fascinating how similar all this is to the talks when Habs fans wanted to look into moving him.

"hey let's just tell this entire fanbase what they do need and try to pawn off an overpaid defender who might crack their top 4 because we are armchair GM's"
Detroit doesn't want him. End of discussion.

I thought the Habs got bent in that trade but boy did they do well
That being said, I think that trade gives an idea of Petry's value. The fact is Matheson took a big step in Montreal, but already had some value.

I figure PIT could get a similar contract on a D and perhaps a young forward who hasn't shown much.

I think there was still a little shine left on Petry from the season before that has worn off a little more this year. But yeah Matheson definitely fits well with Montreal and that helps

there was rumor floating around the pens board that the pens were trying to move petry at the draft tonight

Still a decent defender, probably overpaid by about a mil for what he brings, was solid for the pens last year as a number 3.

31pts in 61 games.
Paid 6.25 mil this year and next.
Ann Arbor boy on the wrong side of 35.

would he be of interest to Detroit and if so what would they offer at full price or with a 1 mil retained?
At full price we offer Ben Chiarot.

I like how players with similar contracts have been traded straight up for picks and people were saying Petry’s contract is bad enough to require the 14th overall

I’m not upset that Wings fans don’t want him. But man there’s some really stupid bullshit in this topic. Petry is still a solid player. His contract is a little steep, but not really that steep in the current NHL.

I think with the current cap crunch, guys like Petry, Granlund, Dvorak, are likely to be flipped for one another more than moved for picks or anything that's a net addition to a teams payroll.

I don't think Pittsburgh would have to attach a sweetener to move him, but could be areturn like hall.
League is so messed up with values right now

This has gotta be what, the 4th straight year where someone started a thread trying to trade Petry to Detroit?
