Cynicism until proven otherwise.
It's common sense and a logical reaction.

He was hired without experience, without a hiring process, and he was our best players agent. Just that in itself looks like a gong show, but you want to give him the benefit of the doubt

After he was hired, the offseason was the worst by far since Chia years. If the team had done anything to address the glaring deficiencies in the roster nobody would be blaming Jackson

Who should be blamed other than the person in charge? He's the top of hockey ops and all decisions go through him now.

He has hired before the offseason, and this offseason was the worst by far since Chia years. If the team had done something this offseason to address the glaring deficiencies in the roster everyone would love him.

It’s the GMs job to construct the roster.

The f***? The oilers have a clearly defined corporate hierarchy

It's like saying Shapiro isn't really in charge of the Blue Jays roster. Of course he is, Atkins reports to Shapiro

Holland reports to Jackson. Staois is in charge of the sens. The GM handles day to day operations, but they cannot do anything without approval of their boss using this hierarchy. Jackson was made the pinnacle of hockey ops

If you don;t believe me then believe the Oilers:

"Jackson will report directly to Katz, while Holland will report to Jackson."

How is there already vitriol towards Jackson?

I didn’t post vitriol. I posted that the move - intended to guarantee to keep McDavid - may blow up in their face.

JJ is McDavids friend and long time confidant. However he is now his boss. The fundamental dynamics of the relationship have changed and McDavid now has a new agent in his ear.

We fail badly this year and McDavid may want to preserve his long time friendship with JJ but not work for him in a difficult environment.

Might be a record, lol. Even for the oilers.

I know it amuses me--the one concern I had at the time should have been a warning sign and that was the two unsigned kids we had no money to sign. We thought he would figure out a way to sign them. Not signing either Skinner or arvidsson and giving the money to halloway would have been better or signing neither and siging both broberg (just to piss him off) and halloway

We need some workhorses on this team with some size and compete. Too many passengers and guys not willing to pay the price to win game in and game out.

On july 5th 2024 he was hailed as a mad genius on this board--now he is a bum who should be fired-That did not take long.
The worm turned when we started realizing what all those signings would have to sacrifice.

In theory, getting guys like Arvidsson and Skinner to add to a team that was going to retain Broberg/Holloway on cheap RFA deals should have been a home run. Blues f***ed us with the offersheets though, and new decisions needed to be made that weren’t.

I also never really liked moving Mcleod for Henrique. On paper it makes sense cause you got Henrique for “free” and could turn Mcleod into assets. But with Henrique starting so slow, it’s looking bad. And it may not just be a slow start, it could be the age at this point which means we really f***ed up.

Yep--I think it was the 15 of July when I looked at our cap situation and thought Mcleod was moved to allow us to sign Broberg and Halloway--nope. But then again for 3 season I have been taking about how bad we are against the cap---so my rants fell on mostly def ears

Ah yes, so genius, no one ever noticed.

Ironically, people hand-wrung non-stop about Holland's cap management and yet he made due when needed.

Jackson created this cap mess in one off-season, willfully, #becausecapaccrual

He made due by f***ing us last summer with the Brown overage because "I don't care about next year" was his attitude, lol. Ditto for Campbell.

Going from 3.25M Ceci to 950K Emberson is the only cap related move that I liked.

Hindsight stuff but:
Going from 2M Mcleod to 3M Henrique at 3C, hurts.
Probably should have gone with $2M Holloway over $3M Skinner.

We really just needed to make difference decisions. We were always going to be f***ed cap-wise in some form. But needed to divy the money out differently.

I wonder, does Leon re-sign if they go with one new forward (Arvidsson) and keeping those two? Not so sure about that

People don't like to hear this, but McDrai have a lot of say (whether directly or indirectly) on hockey ops decisions

JJ looks like an idiot either way, just thought I'd point the above out.

Henrique was the bad signing ... honestly I never really felt like he was that big of a part of the Finals run anyway as he was hurt half the time.

They never should have let the Broberg + Holloway signings get to OS time, but once they were tendered, they should have dumped Henrique to like San Jose (hey at least the fam gets to go back to sunny Cali) and matched the Broberg OS.

$14M and McD helping his production for all these years.... tells me yes lol. Far as I know, the whole "get Drai wingers" thing was an invention by this fanbase, never really came from Drai's mouth himself. He would never say it to throw the team under the bus.

At this point, none of the new signings are looking great. Arvie looks injury prone as predicted which is a lot of risk to put into a $4M signing. I do think he's played the best hockey out of the 3 though, if he can stay healthy. JSkinner looks slow which was also known when he signed him, but you'd hope that his Top 6 Skill could translate with Drai. Henrique had his moments in the playoffs and was mostly solid and reliable but his advanced age and Mcleod's potential should have swayed that decision in a different direction.

I'm almost certain that all those signings were made under the ASSUMPTION that no offer sheet was coming for Holloway / Broberg and they could slot in the lineup as cheap RFA deals. That lack of foresight probably came from Holland then Jackson took his word for it. Either way, it was a miscalculation and killed what could have been a great off-season.

Well the other UFA signing most people had linked to Edmonton was Jake DeBrusk, and with 3 goals and a long term $5 mill contract, it's not like he's tearing it up either.

At least Arvidsson and Skinner are short term deals.

I'm glad we didn't go Debrusk. Pricey and I didn't think he'd be that much different from Foegele.

Really shoulda got our ducks in a row with the RFAs before committing during the UFA period. If it was hard to predict that Broberg/Holloway were gonna get offersheets, I'd have been fine with it. But if Media members are talking about the possibility, it's something Oilers management needed to have addressed before committing all thier cap.

Maybe. I don't necessarily disagree but I wonder if Leon appreciated playing with (perceived) dregs most of his time running a line.

You've got to think the prospects of playing with (expected to be) good wingers Arvidsson and Skinner was more appetizing than "hey Leon, can you zoom Foegele and McLeod again?"

To be fair to JJ, hindsight is always 20/20, but a thought in the back of my mind was there was too much turnover on the team, when it wasn't all necessary.

Walk from Foegele, that much was obvious. Trade Ceci, yup (and that didn't come til later). Maybe Brosefberg priced himself off the team with a ridiculous offersheet. Okay. And while I'm concerned about Holloway's wrist after he said he can't do pushups (wtf...), and McLeod is too much of a softy, maybe they should have kept them when the offersheets were expected.
