I highly doubt a Gaustad type player garners a 1st round pick this year. More like a 2nd round pick or a 3rd round pick and a prospect which would've been the correct value for Gaustad. I do believe there will be more players available this time around with the amount of expiring contracts out there. Teams that are out or even bubble teams will try and get something for those players.

We'll find out at the deadline, but everything points to this deadline being a sellers market.

Cap space isn't an issue w/ the compliance cap. With the short season, many teams will still think they have a shot at a playoff berth.
 
Drafting players who have a higher probability of being NHL players isn't "safe" its smart.

Drafting a player who has skill but no brains or no work ethic isn't smart.

JT Miller is 19 in the AHL and is an all-star in his first pro season at 19.

Rangers take risk-reward players in later rounds. No sense possibly wasting a first round pick. Fast, Lindberg, St. Croix these guys have high skill levels. Hagelin, Callahan, Stepan were 2+ round picks. Girardi undrafted. Jean undrafted. Hrivik undrafted.

They have been doing a very good job scouting.

Rangers traded some pieces for Nash. Yes. Because they rarely ever have the draft position to draft their own Nash. The fact they have the organizational depth to make that trade is a testament to their scouting.

Agree with them or not, but the Rangers refuse to be pathetic enough to tank seasons to land generational talent (Penguins, Oilers, Capitals).

Consider their draft positions they are doing a very good job.

You are making good points, but no need to bring up Miller being chosen as an All Star. He didnt deserve it. Tommy Grant outscored it. Two career-AHL defensemen (Parlett and Pyett) outscored him, and third pair AHL defenseman Vernace is just a point behind.

He can't yet create offense in the pros and his defense isnt on par yet. He is ok with the puck and terrible without it. He is an All Star only because he is our golden boy first rounder.
