Jared Staal....is he really that bad?

It looks like he is putting up some ok numbers in the OHL with Sudbury. I've only heard that he doesn't compare to the rest of his bros...but maybe he is a late bloomer. He could still be a player.

I've actually heard he could be the best of them all, but that just may be strange talk. Still, he just turned 17 and isn't far behind a PPG for Sudbury. This season will most likely make or break him, as in any player's draft year season. I think he'll still be taken pretty high due to his pedigree.

man, all you need to do is do a search of the board about the 100000 threads about him..

hes not the best staal, it was a misquote it was jordan who they were referring to. Jared did NOT play at all last year in Sudbury, he saw maybe 1-2 shifts a game. This season he is doing alright. He'll probably be drafted but by the time junior is over i would expect him to be a good player....not a standout like his brothers but a solid player.

Hey Jimmy Supafly, your tirade on the original poster is almost as cliche as the original post.

Its a new season, with potentially more people being able to chime in on this age-old question. At the end of the day people want to know how Jared Staal is doing. Let it go.

I haven't seen him play, but 10 points in 12 games on a lowly Sudbury team doesn't seem that bad at all in comparison...at 17, Eric had 62 points in 56 games and Jordan 68 in 68.

New season? There have been at least a half-dozen threads on Jared this season.

Jared is no where near as good as his brothers. He will get drafted into the NHL and will be given a shot based on his name but I don't think anything will come about.

I've seen the Wolves play a couple times this season. Jared looks faster this season, he's getting more icetime. I think it was him that also got in a fight two games ago. The goalie at the last game i was at (Pitton I believe) was pretty solid and the Wolves weren't converting anyway but Jared was generating chances (as far as I could tell) and doing well.

I remember a lot of lukewarm discussion of Jordan Staal in the year before his draft. He had a tendency to kind of "blend in" at times, and I vaguely recall a lot of "unimpressed" posts from people who managed to catch his more "blending in" games. So I don't want to write off Jared yet by any stretch.

Oh wait, they're two completely different people, right? Why should what one guy did have any bearing on the other? Well, there you have it in a nutshell. if Jared manages to put up 50-60 pts or so and not look terrible doing it, he'll probably be drafted surprisingly high. I haven't seen enough of him yet to have my own opinion of where he should go. But he'll go a few notches higher than that. And fair enough, IMHO.

You guys should actually watch him play in person before you just look at his stats. Sure he is producing a bit, but thats not even half the story. I've seen him miss multiple open nets, he is still a lanky awkward skater. Limited hockey sense, average to below average puck skills and shot. Basically the only thing Jared has going for him is size. That being said, I would probably take him in the 4th round because he does have the frame to possibly to develop with, but I could see him going at least in the top 3 rounds maybe as high as early 2nd if he has a 50-60 point season which would probably be a big mistake by the team that picks him. In regards to the post about the misquote, just know I'm about as annoyed with that as you.

Kinda unreasonable to ask everyone who wants to comment on him to watch him in person first. That is like saying I need to see PM Harper live before I can vote.
But if what you are getting at is that posters should be weary of focusing on only stats then I agree.

And all of the Staals are lanky and look akward. At least they look that way on TV.

I wouldn't count a Staal out of anything. We saw the dynamic rate at which the other brothers developed after their draft year. Something tells me that Jared will be an NHL player in some capacity when all is said and done. Teams aren't going to get burned on passing over a Staal again if they can help it. He's going to be one of those guys that everybody considers at one point in the draft or another.

Well I haven't caught any of his games this year but I certainly wouldn't hedge a bet against a Staal. I know a lot of people hate him for not being able to live up to the Staal name, but you have to agree he is raising a few eyebrows, at least on a statistical level. I'd keep an eye on his development, just in case there might be something untapped, ilke a well underneath a blue spring or some other postwar japanese imagery. I still remember last year when people were totally outraged at the thought of him being drafted. Now I see a couple of posters warming to the idea that he might be a surprise first round pick. That's a lot of stance shifting in a span of 6 months. He's outpointing by a good margin Phil Mcrae, who some believe would have been a top 15 pick in this draft. If he continues producing I'd take him in the 5th-6th round.
