Jared Staal....is he really that bad?

What are you talking about the Staal's being slow developers? Everyone knew that Eric, Marc and Jordan were good and hence they were justified high picks. Scouts knew that Jared was about 3rd round quality, and thats for the OHL Priority Selection.

Jared is so far behind the other three its ridiculous.

I wouldn't call them slow developers, but most of them improved quite a bit after being drafted as they filled in their tall, lanky frames.

Jordan's stats weren't as dismal as Jared's in his first OHL season, but they weren't exactly stellar either. In fact, in his draft season, he had 68 points in as many games. When you look at the numbers that players like Crosby, Kane, Perry and others have put up recently in junior, Jordan doesn't stand out. Many people on these boards thought he was being drafted high because of his bloodlines.

I'm not saying Jared is going to be anywhere near as good as his brothers, but he already has 10 points in 12 games and is the third leading scorer on his team. He didn't get a lot of icetime last year and maybe he didn't deserve it either as a 16 year old. If he keeps up or increases his production, he might change a lot of people's minds about how far he can go.

I'm not saying that he is a definite first rounder, but I think you are being a bit harsh on him.

...And here comes our weekly Jared Staal thread!

Sorry bud. I have a life...so I don't spend 24 hours a day on HF checking every single post. I haven't seen a thread on Jared Staal in a while. By the way, why did you even bother reading this thread if it was just another one about Jared Staal. You don't own the boards so maybe take your stupid remarks elsewhere.

I wouldn't count a Staal out of anything. We saw the dynamic rate at which the other brothers developed after their draft year. Something tells me that Jared will be an NHL player in some capacity when all is said and done. Teams aren't going to get burned on passing over a Staal again if they can help it. He's going to be one of those guys that everybody considers at one point in the draft or another.

I wouldn`t be surprised to see your team, Pittsburgh or the Rangers take him fairly high, if only to have 2 brothers within the system.

I've heard (can't remember which Sutter said it) that the only Sutter brother that didn't play in the NHL was actually the most skilled.

I haven't seen Jared Staal (like most prospects), but I'm sure not closing the door on him at only 17. The hockey gods have smiled on the Staal family, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him become as good as any of his brothers if he wants it bad enough.

If he drops to the Pens pick, i'd hope Shero would take him. I don't care if he is supposed to be better or as good as Eric & Jordan...you never know.

:biglaugh::handclap:

Well said!

...

Yes, from what I hear he was lucky to play 6 minutes a game last season and now he's progressing well, though still behind his brothers. I'm predicting he'll be drafted somewhere between 20-50.

Any other predictions?

man, all you need to do is do a search of the board about the 100000 threads about him..

hes not the best staal, it was a misquote it was jordan who they were referring to. Jared did NOT play at all last year in Sudbury, he saw maybe 1-2 shifts a game. This season he is doing alright. He'll probably be drafted but by the time junior is over i would expect him to be a good player....not a standout like his brothers but a solid player.

Jordan projecting better than Eric? Even that's a stretch.

haha GOOD PIC..

those hands are fake. he doesn't want to get out of that clock at all...

I haven't seen him play, but I personally am not holding last season (with a couple shifts per game only) against him. 16GP, 8G, 7A, 15P so far in your draft year is pushing first round status depending on what else you bring to the table (and Jared Staal has a lot of the intangibles going for him...)

Agreed, he is big...apparently a better skater and putting up points. He also has an A and plays a solid allround game.

l8 bloomer but i havent seen him play so i dont know how much of a fluke this is all i can say is that if jared got a pt per game in his year b4 draft and jared does this year, he can be a top 10

So Jared Staal has officially turned the corner, at least in HF world.

Good for him.

And to Jason for calling out Garbs for his comment, it wasn't that malicious of a comment and it was true. It would suck to be considered below average (justified or not) when your brothers are at the top of your sport.

Is Jared a winger or a center? Is he a right-handed shot or left? Is he more of a playmaker or shooter?

Inquiring minds wanna know.
