Jared Bednar & Co. Discussion Thread

Wait, Parkkila? What did he do wrong...?
What has he done right? George turned into a pumpkin, and Blackwood looked better when he was first traded here before that mother f***er got his talons into him.

Also, didn't George call him out in an interview after he left? Something like "You can't learn from someone who never played at this level" or some shit? Even if George was spiteful, that's still a red flag in my book.

On the other hand, Varlamov said Parkkila was the best goalie coach he ever had.

I’m saying if you’re gonna change out coaching this is a good time to start fresh. He’s been alright as a goalie coach but there’s also an argument that Blackwood saw a drop in play from his first couple months here.
That's also been the book on Blackwood though. He can be good/great, but then has bouts of play that are not-so-great.

Didn't he say that about Allaire?
It's Varlamov who conviced Sakic to get Parkkila. They had worked together in the KHL, and even before Parkkila was with the Avs Varlamov went to work with Parkkila during the offseason.

I don't really care TBH. I would ask Blackwood and Wedgewood what they think. If they like him, keep him. And also ask some of the skaters, does he do a good enough job with the pre-scout on opposing goalies.

Come on man. He wasn't going to say that he knows how to counter Jared's only gameplan, that he has done it many times before and that he can do it even with a significantly inferior team on paper.
Except he did not have significantly inferior team on paper, he had absolutely equal one.

It’s not just how the powerplay performed, but also the personnel and placement of personnel. Landeskog shouldn’t be the rightwing trigger man, he should be net front. I would have preferred they kept Drouin up there or put Nichuskin over there. Options aren’t fantastic, but the fact of the matter is that Landeskog will always be better net front and down low.

From a PK perspective, we were hemorrhaging high danger passes. Passes to the middle of the box and passes across the net front. The fact that there was no answer was pathetic. We’ll get beat on PKs, but it shouldn’t feel automatic in playoffs.

My God, please don't tell me we're basing any honest assessment of the organization off the single worst goalie to ever play in an Avalanche sweater. A guy who was so reviled by the end that Mikko publicly bitched him out during a game and not one single player even tried to calm 96 down.

I don't think Blackwood faltered because of Parkkila, Blackwood faltered because near as I can tell that's what he's always done. He's not an ideal franchise netminder. He has slumps, sometimes extended ones. If he was a phenomenal franchise goalie he'd still be in New Jersey. He's...good. But inconsistent. And in today's presser, Sakic and MacFarland said he was excellent in four of the seven games. I don't think he was really *bad* in game seven, if anything he was bad in game six and somehow the Avs still won that one. And remember, this was literally his first ever playoff series.

Honestly I think he got the very most out of what he was given. Look at Grubauer's complete implosion this season. Kuemper was a total rollercoaster in Colorado and that hasn't changed in Los Angeles. Georgiev just plain sucks. So does Annunen. I just don't see there being a worlds better goalie coach unless you somehow convince Francois Allaire to come out of retirement, or convince his twin brother to leave the Rangers.

Sadly there just wasn't anyone better suited for that half-wall spot once Drouin proved he couldn't do it.

No argument on the PK. Can't f***ing stand it.

Bednar's seat should be lukewarm at the very least.

And quite frankly, I'm not too concerned about the success rate. If he's still unwilling to change, I want him gone. Period.

I almost feel bad for Bennett, imagine your entire department at work screws up yet you're the only one held accountable and fired for it.

Bennett gone is gonna do absolutely nothing for this team. They’re just scrambling at this point looking for someone to blame for shitting the bed
Yeah. I completely over-reacted based on selected quotes out of context. But at the end of the day, the entire Q&A was just a big episode of the Empororer's New Clothes.

The Avs have beaten their journalist to submission. They can walk out there, say anything at all and the reporters just dutifully nod and file their "story".

I almost feel bad for Bennett, there's no way he should be the only guy to lose his job over this. Like it's all on him.

Imagine your entire department at work screws up but you're the only one who loses their job because of it.
Yup. Bennett gets fired but Pratt gets a free pass when the PK struggled in big moments as much as the PP did. If you’re replacing anyone on the coaching staff, replace the entire staff. Another poor decision by the management.

Maybe occasionally in game, yes.
But all season, every shift, absolutely not.

And certainly not in the offseason.

Tell me, do you get the same sense of lack of motivation from any other players on the team? Are there other players who seem lazy on the ice or seen a significant downgrade in effort over the past 2 seasons? If so, who? And if not, why is everyone else seemingly motivated but not one player.
Some folks think the players are to blame, some folks think the coaches are to blame.

I think most folks can agree to disagree when it ultimately comes down to this. But I'm trying understand what you view the role of the HC as actually being?

Wait, Parkkila? What did he do wrong...?

Think it mostly stems from that interview with Prosvetov you mentioned earlier in the season, that just sounded like sour grapes, and trying to blame someone else IMO.

He had called him one of the best in the league when he played for the team.

Blamming Parkkila for the results, feels like blaming Bednar for the results IMO. As mentioned, Blackwood has had issues of inconsistency before. As well as low shot totals, which he had against Dallas.

Oh ok I think I found it.

Who knows, but sounds like sour grapes, looking to blame someone else to me.

A big part of his reasoning is that Georgiev was a great goalie, who's confident, and very strong mentally, and can focus and do his job. All of that is objectively false.

He's wrong about Jussi not playing too. He was a goalie in junior in Finland. He said in an interview he was about to go into the army when a friend asked him to be their goalie coach.

He also let in 4 goals according to NHL.com in that Florida game, so not sure how the score was 3-3.

Out of surgery... came home, parked in front of boob tube.. to see Joe and Cmac presser live.

Am I still in recovery? Bennett gone. "Jared Bednar IS our head coach". Dreamin?

Can I go back to surgery?

Prediction, ain't t'all difficult. Nothing gonna change.

The definition of mealiemouthing is...

Too harsh??

Am going for the MacK game time plastic surgery reconstruction instant special tday.. aka the Bruins, Taylor Hall.. Jan 27, 2022, broke up nose.

Tho this is 10 hours after surgery and exceedingly less blood boo hoo in the pic. Finally had surgery to correct results of either pucks plural, to Tony Esposito-ish pressed masks during playing days, one shot in particular that was a fine mess, or blocking lacrosse ball shots, as a center middie, which is either super dedication or super stoopid… all three. My brother was ok with leaking in his truck on ride home since he is a goalie, a goalie coach, and figured why not…

What a p***y, I know.

Leaving gm 7 behind now. Tho the Joe/Cmac presser enough to pisser again.
