Jared Bednar & Co. Discussion Thread

Like it or not, Rantanen's performance next year will tell a lot about whether or not keeping Bednar is a good move. If DeBoer can get Rantanen back in form, whether it's with managing his minutes better, playing in a different system, motivating him better, or whatever. That would be some indictment to Bednar, and to management for making the misjudgement of moving on from Rantanen instead of making a change behind the bench.

Bennet needed to be gone, that was the bare minimum they had to do. This series was lost on bad powerplay, that's arguably the #1 reason.

Did Bennett do anything other than the PP? I ask because would hiring another assistant (let's assume, hypothetically, he's really good) realistically change the system at all - ie. the team not being weak bitches?

Honestly no point in conducting this press conference lol.

Fans want blood. Management wants continuity. Nobody happy.
They did the bare minimum. It's ok if fans think it's not enough, but at least they did that. At least they know one area where they failed, instead of putting it all on bad luck and "oh well, stuff happens".

Only MacK and Necas at worlds. No Cale. Read into that what you will
Well as it stands there are several junior players on the Team Canada roster while Makar, Thomas, Kyrou, Batherson, Bean and Fabbro are at home. Until someone from the 2018 WJC team is added to the roster or an injury is actually announced, wouldn’t read too much into Cale not being there

It’s also entirely possible that had Rantanen stayed and got his contract, that he’d see no reason to change anything.

Is the double trade the kick in the arse he needed to be motivated and show full effort?
Is ice time the reason he was getting lazier here?

There’s simply no way of knowing.

Think of it this way. Should the Canadiens have kept Drouin based on how he played here? I think I they would all tell you no. How Rantanen performs there isn’t necessarily how he would perform here.

He brought the average count of baldness in the coaching staff up. We're well rid.

That, once again, falls on the coach to be able to motivate him then.

You always bet on talent. The reason the Avs moved on from Rantanen, is that they thought that he was declining. And he was, post 2022. But, if he regains his pre 2022 form in Dallas, then that's an indictment. You need to be able to get the maximum effectiveness from your players, especially your superstar players.

It's pretty f***ing hard to find superstar talent in this league. Way harder than to find a good coach...

I have zero faith we will get past the 1st or 2nd round next season with Jared Bednar coaching this team.

I don’t even care what we do this summer or if we lead the f***ing league in points next regular season.

Motivation, confidence, belief… it’s gone.
To me CMac just lost his privilege to hire his own coach. He made his decision today and "hired" Bednar again.

The only thing remotely interesting that came out of the press conference was when Sakic said, "Mikko's agent knows what number they were at before we traded him."

I would've liked someone to ask a question to the effect of "You thought this was a special team, but you still lost to Dallas without Heiskanen and Robertson. Where do you think you need to improve?"

As expected, all the comments were glass-half-full spin. They're disappointed, still believe in the team, blah blah blah.

100%

I'm already preparing for all the second guessing and un-proveable takes to be like a plague of locusts on HFBoards and socials for the better part of the next decade whenever the Avs struggle or Rantanen succeeds. It will be crickets whenever the reverse occurs of course.

I don't see why that's on Bednar, there's a very good chance Rants does indeed bounce back. But that's because Rants always has been and always will be a great player. A great player with flaws who hit a bad regular season by his standards (still managed to hit 88 points BTW, and he had 64 in 49 games in Colorado) but a great player nonetheless. If Bednar gets the blame for one bad year of Mikko, does he not get credit for all the good years, including hitting the century mark in back-to-back seasons!?

Landeskog will be our 2C because why not? Lets just run every winger there and have a position-less line to confuse the league.

This board is going to be awful quiet now that so many folks are going to be less invested because the coach didn't get fired

I would argue that yes, it's on Bednar. Two things: motivation. Coach is a major factor. Secondly: TOI.

Rantanen has been creeping up on minutes continuously:
19-20: 18:57
20-21: 19:55
21-22: 20:59
22-23: 22:13
23-24: 22:54
24-25 (before the trade): 22:30

If Rantanen is able to return to better form via better ice-time management, or DeBoer simply being a better coach for him, then yes. It tells you a lot. And you can wonder how many other Avs players Bednar is holding back.

But we will see how it goes.
