Not exactly the same, because he didn't have the NCAA success Carle had, but look at how Granato did with a contender? He had to learn on the job and it didn't go well.
Look at Bednar's first season in the NHL? He had to learn how to manage the egos and personalities of NHLers. He stripped the A's from Iginla and McLeod to start the season, because he wanted to give more responsibility and ownership of the team to its stars like Nate and Mikko. But he did it in a way that impacted the dressing room, because it embarrassed well respected vets a little bit. Both seemed eager to leave after that. That first season was a disaster, because everyone was learning.
Most times I remember a rookie NHL head coach's fist season, they seem together out coached the first season in the playoffs too. They can't find the adjustments, but the other coach can. It's all part of the learning curve. Hard to fast track that.
They could have a dominant regular season next year with someone like Carle, but then get into the playoffs and lose in the first round again. Especially the first round in the Central.
Avs will probably have knock out drag out wars with the best teams in the first round for a while. And the top teams have very experienced coaches in the NHL.
Gotta go with someone with NHL coaching experience IMO.
